    #14446704 - 05/13/11 05:19 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

went for a 6 mile hike in the mountians around where i live and found a little growth. One morel wich is a good sign they should be start to pop up more finally up here. Lots of snow plant. Also still some patches of snow on the ground.

1) is a polypore that is mostly closed the tree was covered in these things. Maybe Cryptoporus volvatus
2) snowplant
3) cup fungus
4) Morel
5-6) Gyromitra
7) another polypore maybe Albatrellus ellesii but not sure

Your Gyromitras are G. gigas.  They are good to eat if you cook them well and preferably outside.

The last pic is Discina perlata.

Looks like your morels were growing with white fir.

In the mountains morels grow with white fir, red fir, and incense cedar.

They like to fruit when the trees die.  Sometimes I drive around looking for dead fir trees.  If the tree died within a year or 2 there are sometimes over 50 morels around the base.  Look for the ones where the needles have turned red but have not fallen off yet.  Always check recently burned areas and recent logging areas.

They move up in elevation approximately 500 feet per week.

If you are finding Gyromitra gigas you are at the upper edge of where they fruit.  If you are finding Boletus rex-veris you are at the lower edge.
