Check this out, my new security system arrived today. Spines an inch and a half long, curved back in at the end. If you struggle, they stick more.

Local teens won't break in with machetes. Fire is another option to defeat cactus. Also, you can just drop a sheet of plywood on them.
But yes I'm serious, they are going to grow around my windows and along my property edge. When they get bigger, first they grow up. They are going in pots in a day or two, I need to get ready for them.

Glad they arrived so nicely! They've got a weird sheath on them that I guess let's them pull out easily? That all I can think of by they are barbed underneath and sharp as hell regardless! Be sure to wear gloves and only pick them up with one hand, just in case they stick in a little bit you want a free hand to use a stick to pry it off

cacti with daggers instead of spines....I am sure your windows will be quite safe
how fast do those grow? most cacti I have ever owned take forever to show any progress.

They're a cylindropuntia so about like any other opuntia specie I believe which are generally fast. I'll put up a pic of mom tonight when I get home from work

They grow fast for cactus. And it's not so much that I have anything to hide, I just don't want burglars wasting time with me when they can rob rich folk.
Planted one little piece today as a test, it was unmanageable. The branch kept climbing up my glove and out of the pot. I had on gloves and used tongs and managed not to get stuck to the point of bleeding.

Lucky! I bled outta half my spots I got stuck lol. Bare handed of course cuz I'm kinda slow. You could probably put them into a bowl of sand til they put out roots, shouldn't be tough for roots on these as they spread via buds as well as seed

Not luck, experience. I told you, I've dealt with these things before. Lesson learned.
I'm going to root them in coir/perlite/limestone/gypsum. Then build elevated beds for them with limestone slabs and gravel. Place I want them catches roof runoff, I'll have to engineer it to drain extraordinarily well. That drainage will divert into garden beds, win/win

I'm going to paint before I build the landscape feature. And I really think the cholla will remain potted, I'll build hidden recesses for them. So I can move them if necessary. Still secure, nobody could do it in the dark or without equipment.

I got it back to the fence line, maybe like 5% of it lol. He just didn't want it falling into that ditch area. I think if I get me a house in the near future I'm gonna plant those suckers up as a fence line. It'd also be beneficial to camo up a underground entryway to a grow area lol, but that's neither here nor there.
They look great in those pots btw! Very pretty, and viscous.

Second species acquired, these grow to the south of here. (I had to drive anyway.) Smaller spines, in dense clusters. Still wicked.

That second plant looks identical to one I got cuttings of from a neighbor recently, also for security. Great minds think alike, or slightly paranoid minds think alike, heh.
To be more specific, I have a little girl growing up in my house and I thought this might be a good boyfriend deterrent if it was growing outside of her window.

Freak winds yesterday. At one point my screen door slammed around into a big potted San Pedro. Big heavy pot slid around and slammed into a smaller pot of cholla, shattering it and knocking the SP out of its pot.
Cholla is already growing roots, very cool. I've repotted them this morning.
I can't say it enough: wear gloves when handling cholla.

Yikes! How many spines got ya? It's crazy they just barely have to get into the skin and those scales/barbs grab! Good to see they've started rooting already as well. Hopefully that San Pedro is alright, as well as the chollas.

Two spines. One grabbed me, then the other got when I was trying to get loose. Then I stopped, took a breath, and got the camera before things got worse. Also got pliers to hold the cactus with.
Great biology lesson, it's apparent how they spread all over the Southwest.

So it turns out the little short branches really are branches and not seed pods, you can root 'em and they grow branches:

Apparently the cone at the end houses a flower, and then a fruit may grow out of that a year later? Not many people seem interested in cholla, other than looking for ways to get rid of them.

Cylindopuntia rosea, maybe. The ones that grow locally to me are C. imbricata.

I'm thinking they're the rosea with the pink flowers (mom is in bloom as well). What a hardy freaking plant to man, it was in the negatives this past winter and that mother plant grew like crazy this year. I'm gonna attempt a graft on one eventually. Attempt meaning not skewer the shit out of myself.
