Check this out, my new security system arrived today. Spines an inch and a half long, curved back in at the end. If you struggle, they stick more.

Local teens won't break in with machetes. Fire is another option to defeat cactus. Also, you can just drop a sheet of plywood on them.
But yes I'm serious, they are going to grow around my windows and along my property edge. When they get bigger, first they grow up. They are going in pots in a day or two, I need to get ready for them.

Glad they arrived so nicely! They've got a weird sheath on them that I guess let's them pull out easily? That all I can think of by they are barbed underneath and sharp as hell regardless! Be sure to wear gloves and only pick them up with one hand, just in case they stick in a little bit you want a free hand to use a stick to pry it off

cacti with daggers instead of spines....I am sure your windows will be quite safe
how fast do those grow? most cacti I have ever owned take forever to show any progress.

They're a cylindropuntia so about like any other opuntia specie I believe which are generally fast. I'll put up a pic of mom tonight when I get home from work

They grow fast for cactus. And it's not so much that I have anything to hide, I just don't want burglars wasting time with me when they can rob rich folk.
Planted one little piece today as a test, it was unmanageable. The branch kept climbing up my glove and out of the pot. I had on gloves and used tongs and managed not to get stuck to the point of bleeding.

Lucky! I bled outta half my spots I got stuck lol. Bare handed of course cuz I'm kinda slow. You could probably put them into a bowl of sand til they put out roots, shouldn't be tough for roots on these as they spread via buds as well as seed

Awesome name. Did you ID the species yet?

Not luck, experience. I told you, I've dealt with these things before. Lesson learned.
I'm going to root them in coir/perlite/limestone/gypsum. Then build elevated beds for them with limestone slabs and gravel. Place I want them catches roof runoff, I'll have to engineer it to drain extraordinarily well. That drainage will divert into garden beds, win/win

Nice!
I believe it's the cylindropuntia rosea, or something very similar to it.

I'm going to paint before I build the landscape feature. And I really think the cholla will remain potted, I'll build hidden recesses for them. So I can move them if necessary. Still secure, nobody could do it in the dark or without equipment.
