Outhouses
    #14445534 - 05/13/11 01:29 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Let's say I had a chunk of land in the Rockies somewhere and the first thing I wanted to build was an outhouse to allow more comfortable camping until more elaborate structures could be built.

What are the considerations to keep in mind when deciding how to build this thing?  I'm guessing the standard pit type is best for my purposes since I don't want to ever move a bucket full of shit.  What happens when this type gets full?  Dig another hole and move the hut?

Basically, who can give me the lowdown on crappers?

dig the pit, toss in some lime periodically and it should last many years
depending on the depth, 8-10 feet, the pit should be almost as large as the
outhouse. once full, top it with lime and cover it, start the process over
and move the outhouse to the new location, just dont build it too close to
the old location

keep a big can of bug spray in there.
spiders LOVE outhouses.

I prefered to shit in the woods than in my friends outhouse that was fucking filled with goddamn spiders.

See I'm not scared of spiders so much, (poison ones maybe) and defiantly not racoons (unless there rabid). However the idea of a "raccoonspider" scares the ever loving shit outta me. What the hell would such a creature look like ? It would be very toxic just because nature loves making the freak animals very toxic, attempt handling of a platypus and discover there venomous spines sometime.

the only spiders I hate are black widows and brown recluses.
both of which lived in his outhouse.

Their are 'composting toilets' available.  They can be pricy, but are certainly easier to deal with than digging a pit and building an outhouse.

Well, I shouldn't say this, but when I use to go hunting I'd simply grab a tree in a sitting position and blow shit. Wiping is kind of difficult when wearing pulled down snow pants but as long as you have a trove of napkins and hand sanitizer you're ok until lunch time.

Just build an outhouse that will never fill up, and will never smell -build it over a stream.:lmafo:

As long as no one downstream will care about the floating toilet paper, and as long as you don't plan on using it when the stream is frozen, you are golden.

Yeah, but those require hauling buckets of human shit around.  Which is something I'm definitely not into...

Not really.  The one that I used had to be emptied only once or twice a year.  The 'waste' was an odorless humus rather than 'human shit'.  Looks and smells like potting soil.  The only drawback is the need for electricity to run the fans that vent the composting vapors.  You could probably get by with a solar panel and a deep cycle battery if you don't have regular 'grid' power.  (Just did a google search and some of them actually have a solar panel option.)

I can just see it.  You will discover a beautiful stream running right by your cabin, but only to find out that some dick upstream from you built himself an outhouse over the stream.

Interesting.  The only ones I have used have been basically buckets under a toilet seat where the bucket needs to be emptied into the composter when full.  At that point (I assume), it's still very much just "human shit"--at least on the top layers.  A google search reveals some pretty high tech composting toilets along the lines of what you're talking about though.

I would just get the toilet seat on a folding stand or the one that attaches to a trailer hitch. just dig a hole under it and fill it up a little after each turd to keep smell down. For a better one the ten foot hole like the other poster said would be good. But if its for a couple times a year just temp toilet seat it up maybe set up a few boards with a shower curtain for the ladies.

well this settles things, you guys and the lack of a potty at the barn have convinced me to build an outhouse

I'll do a little scrounging over the next few days and see what I can come up
with parts wise, hopefully I dont have to whittle a toilet from scratch
