If it looks grayish black, it's a subb. See below.

These look black-black to me and to myself foe prints appear grey-black being a lighter shade of black.
The difference is subtle enough that it can confuse beginners or be difficult to recognise if one is just looking at a pic of a black print but can be easily seen when pics or live prints of the two species are compared side by side.
Once one has seen a real live subb print the blackness is so uniquely black that one can easily recognise by sight any live print before them(restricted to foes and subbs of course).

When I printed my foes, they turned straight up brown. I only left them on for like 20 minutes, so I got the lightest spore color possible. They're more purple/brown than "gray" ime.

If you look at the spore print right in the middle, you can see the gray tones as light passes through the spores.

You have got a good eye distinguishing purple-brown with the foes.

With the subbs though the spores and the sporeprint itself would be characterised as black. Where the black is laid down more lightly because of light printing it appears grey because of the white background but this is to be expected.

yeah you guys are probably right that one just didn't drop enough spores. definitely was black in some sections were enough spores were deposited. I think I can ID them in the field now, they are distinctly meaty and robust kinda like subaeruginosa actually.
