ID request in Texas
    #14444035 - 05/13/11 07:05 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Habitat:
Where does it grow? Eg. woods, pasture, state, province, country, altitude, etc. What does it grow on? Eg. soil, dung, wood (dead, living, what kind of wood?), etc.
This guy was growing in a front lawn in the Arlington area.
Gills:
Color, attached/not, gills/pores, etc.
Very dark gills that look to be attached.
Stem:
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.
The stem was short, thick, and solid.
Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
The cap was a light whitish-cream fading to an orangish center and is approximately 4" in diamiter
Spore print color:
Very important!
The spore print was dark, almost black.
Bruising:
Color that the mushroom bruises, if any.
No noticable bruising.
Other information:
Scent of the mushroom, anything else you think is important, large close-up pictures showing stem, cap and gills.

After consulting a few of my mushroom books, I'm leaning towards Stropharia coronilla, but the cap color doesnt match up, as it's more white than golden. Sorry for the camera phone pics.

That looks to be an edible Agaricus sp.

Yes, agaricus sp., but check carefully for bruising and smell.

NB but then it should have free gills and more a chocolate brown spore print (but they can be dark).  Also, having called it edible, the yellow on the stem might contradict me.  Please crush the base of one and see if it strongly yellows and smells of ink.  If not I am fairly sure it is an Agaricus anyway.

EDIT: koraks has said it as well but I will post this regardless so you know I agree.

It is an Agaricus and I see yellow staining on the stem. If it smells like poster paint then don't eat it. If it doesn't then do.

Thanks for the responses guys! It did have quite a bit of yellow staining, but it took several hours to develop. It smelled pretty strong, not bad, just really mushroomy. I see a lot of similarities to some Agaricus, especially arvensis, but decided to pass on sampling the flavor until I gain more competence in identifiying them. Thanks for the help!
