Exploitation

I just started working at the 4th of May, I was unemployed for about 8 months, and my country is going through a political crisis and it's very difficult to find a job here nowadays, I guess employers are taking advantage of this situation.
So now I was hired for a management position in a restaurant and there's another girl in the same position, and a chief above us. We are hired for 40 hours/week which is the legal limit in my country. The three of us are supposed to manage our shifts and since there are 2 shifts per day and the restaurant is open 7 days/week, with 3 people doing it it's possible that the 3 of us work the 40 hours and have our 2 days off.
The thing is, the girl had already told me to get ready for "extra shifts" in which I am to work 16 hours a day, and extra 8 hours days and not get paid for those. And the guy as already came telling me that some weeks I may only have 1 day off (working 48 hours/week).
I spoke to her to try to understand how do thy do things, since with 3 people it's more than enough for having all shifts covered without having to overwork, and she said that, well... the boss doesn't like doing his part much, and spends most of his time at home. This last week she worked 9 days in a row, 5 of which 16 hours, the other 4 - 8 hours.
And I will be making less 400€ less than them, which is a lot. I'm not very sure what to do, because I don't wanna be unemployed, but I also don't wanna give up having a personal life and even less working for free.
I asked her if making a complaint to the court of work wouldn't help and she says the guy will only find a way to get me fired. I'm thinking of any ways of trying to resolve this without loosing the job, but am a bit stuck. I am also looking for other options of course, but as I said it's not easy with the current state of things.
Anyone has any ideas or has been through a similar situation?

Well honestly it doesn't sound like a happy situation, but my two cents would be to work that job with a smile on your face . Try to meet people that dine there , maybe they have an opening with a better opportunity for you . Also I'd be looking for a new job every day , and at least this way you have an income .
On the other hand you could completely drop off the grid . Grow / Sell Narcotics . Grow / Sell your own food , who knows really .

yeah... this last week he wanted to just give me one day off, I said nobody had warned me and I needed the 2 days to take care of some personal matters.
I'm betting he's only thinking of giving me 1 day off this week, I was thinking of telling him that having just one day off is different of doing 48 hours a week. He can give me only one day off but me working in a way that I work 6 days and end up doing the 40 hours I owe them. I was thinking about subtly having the conversation, explaining that I want everything clear so if I have any doubt about law of work I can't speak to my sister who is a lawyer.
Here in Portugal when you speak of lawyers it seems like you're speaking of the devil.

here in america, lawyers are the devil... most of the politicians here are lawyers
6 days at 8 hours per day is a 48hour week, I'll work far longer than that but anything over 40 hours is paid it 1.5 times the hourly rate or 2 times the rate depending on the company I work for, so up to 40 is paid at $20/hr and after that it's either $30/hr or $40/hr
your time is valuable, never work for free unless it's by your own choice

I've done it before but I am working for contacts and references....
I think you should begin searching for another job while holding down this current job. Once you have a job (or two) lined up, drop this one. It doesn't sound like they respect their employees.

yeah, they don't.
I told the other girl I would probably start looking for something else as I don't like this type of "management" and will end up not being available.
She answered that with the time that that company will consume I will have no time to look for a new job.
I guess I'll start looking hard now, since I'm in an initial phase and although I think he's going to give a sixth 8 hour shift this week (to which I probably won't react "gently"), but at least he's not giving me 16 hour shifts yet.
