newbie question, yellowish colour.. not sure if bruising or contams.. plz see pics
    #14441982 - 05/12/11 08:08 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

hey guys, so this is my first time growing. only one of my BR-verm- cakes colonized successfully. the other three showed no growth at all. i assumed this was because i hadn't mixed the spores in the syringe enough.

anyway so after it had colonzed i could see some yellowish fluid in the cake, i believe this is myc piss. however after birthing, there are still some yellowish areas around the cake. there are also some strange growths with a few drops of clear fluid on them.

i dont know if this is normal or if its contaminated and i should just throw it out.  the pic on the right was taken 3 days later if it matters at all

i have some high-res photos. just want some advice from some of the  more experienced fellow hobbyists

looks like some normal bacterias.

you should put foil between your cakes and the perlite.

also increase fresh air exchange.

you arent getting enough.

and i think your fruiting chamber is built incorrectly

did you dunk? and you will get better flushes with a roll in vermiculite after the 24 hour dunk...

ok, ill put some foil in. i usually fan the chamber out 5-7 times a day, should i put some holes in for better air exchange?

i cant really get a better terrarium but do would darkening the sides, like covering it with paper or something opaque, improve it?

and lastly, if its bacteria should i discard the cake or let it fruit?

thanks alot for the help, its really cool that this community exists

the vids are cool and all. but you need to read how to build a proper fruiting chamber for your cakes.

that yellowing looks fine. nothing to worry about.

always dunk cakes, but not in the fridge. 12-24 hours and then roll in vermiculite.

if you have yellow balls of moisture on your cakes, thats cool. just myc piss. i usually absorb it up with a paper towel.

I have to disagree again, this is JMO but the outer layer on those cakes looks like the sandy texture of the beginning phase of trich. There is a certain candy coating looking layer that looks exactly like myc at the first stage of trichoderma growth, it covers the myc in a few days and then turns green when mature releasing millions of spores into your home/grow area.(I have seen it in person, I thought, wow the myc is colonizing the outside of that cake...NOPE it was trich)I removed the cake after soaking it with lysol and watching it bubble so as not to disturb it and release more spores and then emptied a can of oust while walking through the house. Keep an eye on those, I have a feeling they could turn green any day now. JMHO, I hope I am wrong.:goodluck:

The yellowing looks like a lack of water due to the thickness of the surface, it could be a dead layer of myc on the oustide.

i think youre paranoid dude. yellowing is normal. metabolites are normal. whenever ive seen trich, theres no warning signs. it just pops up real quick.

those cakes look fine to me.

Whenever I have seen trich it looks like bright white myc, grows really fast, and turns green overnight.

after a while you can see trich myc from cubensis myc.

but this dude has a water problem and an air exchange problem.

his cakes are sitting directly on the perlite and he has no holes in his fruiting chamber

If they had white chocolate magic shell ice cream topping with sand in it, and your cake was a scoop of ice cream, thats what trich looked like to me.  :sherlock2:

I have also had other molds but trich is the trickiest, it will sneak up and antique your cakes and then put it on youtube with your cell #, name, and email.:badshroom:

ok guys, so a put a piece of foil between the cake and pearlite. i cant modify this terarrium but it was cheap so for the next batch ill be sure to put some holes on all sides of the chamber and probably a bit more pearlite. ill also remember to dunk and roll in dry verm.

if it does end up to be contams, i'll just discard the whole chamber so i dont release spores in place..

i will let it grow for a while longer and monitor it. in the meantime ill research trych, see what i can find out.

thanks for the terrarium tek video link, it was very helpful..

once again, thanks for all the support and advice guys.

if its a good flush ill be sure to post some pics.

Whats the chamber smell like? Old Sneakers or a smell of shrooms. I know this is your 1st grow, but a foul oder says it all.
Did you smell the cakes when you birthed them and does it smell the same now in your FC?

This is a hard one and I remember my first grow. I smelled the cakes when I opened the jars and it was an odd smell, but I had never grew mushrooms before. But I kept on smelling the FC & the oder really didn't differ that much.
After a few grows I learned that you can tell if your misting to much or not fanning enough. Just little changes as my SGFC is not exactly up to specs.
The best I can tell you is to keep an eye on them for any progressive growths (GREEN). Don't worry about bluing, that just means your misting to hard, and need to let the mist drop on them instead, so don't do that.
I think you'll be fine.
Good Luck
