SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Police raided a South Charleston convenience store Thursday and shut it down, saying people at the store were selling synthetic drugs.
Police say they had been investigating the Citgo on MacCorkle Avenue for a month. They walked out Thursday with several boxes of synthetic cocaine and synthetic marijuana as well as cash and a computer hard drive. Click here to find out more!
People working at the convenience store declined to comment.
A person named in the search warrant has not been charged, so WSAZ.com is not publishing that name.
Synthetic cocaine, marketed as bath salts, was recently made illegal statewide.
Police had a box with dozens of containers of bath salts. They say each container sells for $45 to $50.
"They became popular, and I honestly think they're more deadly. They've proven to be to us," says South Charleston Police Chief Brad Rinehart.
It's a misdemeanor in West Virginia to sell, buy or possess the synthetic drugs, which is punishable by up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
"This is the one place in South Charleston we know that sells them and sells them a lot. And, hopefully, after today they're not going to sell anymore at all," says Rinehart.
Rinehart says his main concern is that bath salts have already proven to be dangerous, even deadly, so he wants to close the door on that possibility and this business too.
He says the business license was revoked in addition to the store’s license to sell beer.
When asked why no one was arrested, Rinehart said, "Well, arrests come as you do your investigation...we're going to determine who we're going to arrest, and everything like that. We've always got time to do that. And, that's what we're going to do. We're not going to rush into anything."
Police say they're consulting with the prosecutor’s office before charging anyone.
