some quick outdoor woodlovers questions
    #14435764 - 05/11/11 04:50 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

With outdoor woodchip beds for woodloving mushrooms do you have to sterilize the wood chips before using them for a patch?

I've read several conflicting theories on this, some say that you should sterilize your woodchips by boiling in a bleach-water mixture, others say that with outdoor beds contamination is not a problem.

If one was to take some sheets of myc colonized cardboard then...
-spread a thin layer of wood chips on the ground
-place the colonized cardboard on top of that
-then put another thin layer of woodchips to cover up the cardboard would this be a good way of colonizing the woodchips? and would it directly fruit from this?

no one? I know these are noob questions but I've searched all the related threads on woodlovers and can't find a definitive answer.

I guess I will boil my wood chips in the bleach water solution just to be safe, since I guess there would be a host of bacteria and other molds and fungi in wood chips.

can anyone answer if this process will be sufficient for the later stages of growth?

My only concern is that some members here have said that woodlovers do not do well with woodchips alone, and that it needs to be transferred to grain then to wood chips.
I'd rather not go through the process of sterilizing grain and making jars, so will the mycelium still eat the woodchips alone and possibly fruit straight from that?

Straight to chip is fine

this tub colinised fully from some left over myc infected cardboard which had chips placed on top of them. Yes there are conflicting reports but if you are going straight from cardboard I would minimise sterilisation and keep things as natural as possible. When it comes to fruiting surrounding bacteria play a big part with the woodlovers.

My prefered method is to bring chips to a rapid boil and then turn off heat and let steep for an hour but this is just for fully (and quickly) hydrating the chips really.

Personally, and I'm new to this but can share the bit of experience I do have, I would lay your cardboard in a tub and lay some chips on top 2/3 almost sawdust, 1/3 chip (help speed colinisation and plug gaps between chips) and use reptile bedding or suchlike which is guaranteed fungus/mold free. I'd cover loosely to keep moisture in but allow air exchange.

Then, once this has fully colinised you can add another layer on top and repeat or once you are happy you have a nice block of spawn dig out a bed and lay this spawn at the bottom on top of a sheet of cardboard cut to size of hole. Then cover spawn and fill in hole up to a ratio of 20 parts substrate to one part spawn or as low as 1/5 or even 1/2 (spawn/substrate) if you want a few fruits the next season. Add a thin casing layer of soil/dead leaves or even cardboard to keep moisture in.

The substrate for your larger patch can be totally unsterile containing mostly chips of various sizes but then some soil/compost/straw mixed in to introduce beneficial bacteria.

Hope this helps

thanks mate very helpful post.

How long did it take that tub to colonize fully from cardboard? we have about a month until the real start to the mushroom season (when the temperature drops alot!) so I'm hoping that it will colonize by that time and maybe at least pop a few fruits this year.

It took a while, I doubt you would get fruits within a month, the woodlovers like to have nearly a year consolidating their position i.e. the latest you can plant out is Spring to expect fruits come the Autumn.

And a lot of the time it takes till the season after that to see fruits! Patience really is the key with these.

They will only put their thoughts to fruiting once all substrate is colinised otherwise all effort goes into mycelium expansion.

If I were you I would concentrate on finding some more wild Ps. Subs this coming season and gather plenty of stem butts with hyphae attached -these really are worth their weight in gold. Then get these straight in with some soaked chips and expand over the winter along with your cardboard project. Plant out in the Spring and hopefully you will have your first man made patch the Autumn after.

Sorry if you are used to the quick turnaround from say Cube growing, these really don't work like that but a lot of people seem to think they might do.

I'm not really worried about it fruiting this year, just would have been nice  haha. Definitely am willing to be patient with it.

all my stem butts have just been chucked into the pine bark for now, as I thought added myc can only be a good thing. I'll probably added a bunch more over the next few months.

Thanks again for your info UK explorer
