Basic Lophophora questions
    #14436999 - 05/11/11 09:03 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I was thinking about sprouting and growing some of my own Lophs (especially after seeing all of your beautiful specimens) and have some questions.

1) What sort of substrate do you guys grow yours on?
2) How often should they be watered (I'm assuming that this is different when they have just sprouted and when they grow into buttons.)
3) Is a window sill enough light?
4) If I buy 100 seeds how many should I expect to sprout?

Btw, they would be williamsii's.

Any help would be awesome! Thanks!

I just read the answer to number 2 last night-
unlike most cactus, williamsii lives where there is a monsoon season and the seedlings expect near-100% humidity for quite some time.

1) coir, sand, perlite and diatamaceous earth. the oil absorbant at auto zone. very good and very effective. pumice can be substituied for perlite and does a superior job.

2) water like once a month once they are good size buttons. seedlings usually stay in humidity dome for 4 or 5 months before you slowly acclimate to the elemnts.

3) a west facing windowsil is where i have a few of my cacti. they get afternoon shade and get watered twice a month. they will do good for a year or 2.

4) germ rates vary from vendor to vendor. i got a shitload of sprouts from a batch of 200 but got none from another batch of 10.

^^^ hurricanes are not something typical cactus seedling experience.
It was in a Loph reference I got linked to by somebody here... shoulda bookmarked it. :frown:

So you are saying Loph seedlings DO NOT need the constant babying that people give them?
They are as hardy as other species? Because that's good news.

Awesome! thanks for the replies. I would have never expected that they would need to stay humid that long. :frown:

Is there a ratio for the substrate? Just 1:1:1:1?

when they little humidty will make them grow pretty fast. look see at these babies.

a couple months old.

yr olds of the same size.

difference between the two is that after like 2 months, the yr olds were removed from humidty so i could set them n my windowsil. the ones that are a couple months old were left outside under filtered sunlight.

the yr olds are on a west facing windo and get afternoon shade. but are in a much drier environment.

they are super easy to care for once you get the hang of it. i lost a bunch of seedlings my first time around. now the survivor are 5 years old.

and i dont baby them.  you don't need too. i work in the oildfield and i have chosen cacti as my main hobby. main reason is that they thrive on neglect. which is perfect for a person away too weeks outta the month.:smirk:

Excellent! Of course you live where they grow anyway, but I'm glad to hear neglect is the answer.
I had assumed so, really.

But we do keep the seedlings more humid, for a longer time, than just regular commercial cactus seedlings, yes?

its basically the same as any other cactus.

when i fisrt started growing lophs they were outside and it was pretty shitty.

the answer? i kept them under shop light. month olds were left their with 24hrs time light on. they grew good but grew way baetter and fatter outside.

what works for some may not work for others, of course. i say you invest in bulk seeds and grow and tweak it to your specifications.

its not rocket science but there is some science in there.
