Here are the mushrooms I picked today. I already sold 5 lbs on Friday and have another 10 lb order to deliver on Monday. This week I have to start getting some restaurants on board, there are still a lot of mushrooms to come off.

This is a fatty that started growing under the plastic. Once I cut it free it plumped right up. It's still growing.

That's a really nice crop! - good job!
Just think if they were the Oysters you thought they were you would only have about 3-4 days to sell them from harvest - and for 50% less money!

Have you calculated a yield yet for the first flush (wet mush/wet sub in %)?

I'm pretty convinced they are Kings. I put the first logs outside for the second flush and they are still producing mushrooms with long stems.

I wasn't too concerned with BE this time around. I didn't weigh the substrate or keep track of the harvested mushrooms any more than weighing before I sell them.

Here is a rough breakdown for 14 logs:

- 3' logs using aprox. 10 lbs dry straw each (1/5 of a bale)
- 6 quart jars of spawn per log
- 5 lbs of mushrooms per log 1st flush

totals

- 140 lbs of dry straw used
- 84 quarts of rye spawn
- ~70 lbs of mushrooms harvested from 1st flush

so that would be around 50% BE.

They are definately kings - and nice ones too!

Personally I prefer yield to BE for this sort of production. Weigh your wet log inc spawn and anything else, weigh your mushrooms you get from it, divide and that gives you your yield %. Then you can look at a log and know how much it's worth!

The user Buckeye Oysters has had great results with Kings by adding 20% dry weight of Alfalfa to the straw - I duplicated his set up with kings for a tray experiment with good yield results, here. Almost all the yield (of about 19%) came in the first flush.

I wonder whether we should change the measure and talk relative to the grain we use at the outset.

I'm metric system but I think a quart is near enough to a litre.  So there's 84 litres of spawn which is probably 60 or so kg of spawn (130lb approx) resulting in 32 kg of fruit (70 pounds).

How have your second flushes tended to go Grobo?  Bigger?

I've read that Kings require a more nutritive substrate. I may give alfalfa a try.

My plan is to set up shelves underneath the hanging logs and grow Kings in trays. I just received my order from Ralphster so I've got some new Oysters to try out on the logs.

The second flush has generally been around 1/4 to 1/2 of the first. The problem is that the mushrooms are growing under the plastic, especially at the top of the logs. Growing in open trays should fix this.

Here is the fat stemmed mushroom I posted before. Took a spore print and cloned it.

I wonder whether you can put some kind of rubber door mat over the tray, that grip stuff they use in restaurant kitchens, with the round holes?

The reason i mention it is that here in Australia all the kings i see in stores are top fruited, and by the looks of it, top bottle fruited.

A mate who had his own shroom business grew from small round bags but always collared the top to make fruiting competitive and limit where the humidity and fresh air contacts the substrate.  Resulting in a consistent 4 same sized fruit per small bag.

Mine aren't quite as nice, well don't grow as consistently.  And the fruit in the foreground are picked from another bag.  You can see the small bags i mentioned before though

I eat stacks of these things and while there's nothing wrong with the stalks, there's nothing wrong with the caps either.
I suspect the fascination with bid fat stalks and tiny caps is a product of the commercial interests and the storing and transport problems.

Fat stalks and big caps are the best to eat

Is that a 153.3g mushroom or a 1.533kg mushroom punkin!?! :o

In other news, i've finally put some of your spawn to fruit!  I'm excited!
