crawdads, crayfish, craydads, crawfish(eh?)
    #14440625 - 05/12/11 03:13 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Anyone? I love these guys, I've only recently decided to go out and get my own instead of buying them. I know thye are all over this region, the rusty crayfish, an invasive species to be exact, super aggressive, and delicious mind you, so I guess oh so good for me not so good for nature. but yeah anyone know much about trapping? I was going to use some old mino traps to setup in a creek near here.

haha yeah I know some good spots to go look, some with real calm water some others in creek beds, but they are fast man, I figured trapping would b far more productive, I could set the traps before going out mushroom hunting and come back and collect my goodness.

This does intrigue me, as we have really clean (I imagine they're clean) crawdads up in Tahoe, and in the truckee river, however this spring the water is swift and cold, swift enough in the river to be dangerous if you're not careful.

You could hike around tahoe, but again, you'll get cold eventually, and most are usually 5' or further under, so you're usually diving to catch them (hotdog on a poll works but you gotta be down there to snag 'em).

I love them myself, but from what I've heard is if catching from lakes or streams it's best to rest them in fresh/clean water for at least 24 hours. Cleans the stank out or something.

depends on where your from/how clean the water is..... anything caught in murky/swampy/nasty water should be purged in this manner

Ones caught from tahoe don't need to be purged.  They live in some of the cleanest waters.

Ray Mears did a nice item about trapping crayfish. Saw it a couple of years ago, and then so an item on invasive crayfish species in my area as well. Even though I've walked around with the intention to do something about this as well, I never really got round to it. Maybe I should. Here's the Ray Mears item, for shits & giggles:

Oh yeah, one of the Les Hiddins (Bush Tucker Man) videos also has a scene on crayfish in it, where he's using a makeshift trap fashioned out of a bundle of twigs and grass tied together with bait (meat or fish) inside it. The crayfish should crawl into the bundle, and be stuck in there when you lift the bundle out of the water.

yeah the rusties here are invasive and highly aggressive, so there are an abundant of them, and you're actually doing nature a service by indulging. WINWIN!

Snakehead fish are supposedly delicious, too.

Someone needs to start an invasive-species restaurant. Zebra mussels, etc. Serve everything on a bed of kudzu.

trapping is easier but you can stick a cup in behind them and spook them
into the cup, my brother and I caught them all the time like that when we
were kids, never had an issue

put a half gallon of milk to 5 gallons of water to purge them, milk acts
like a laxative and it only takes a couple of hours, keep the water
chilled and drop a bubble stone in it to keep them alive for more than a day

I never heard of purging with milk.  Hmmmmmmmmmm...

Might have to try that.  The only thing is; I would avoid using chlorinated water.

I thought at first this was a food thread, then I read the first part of it, and thought, oh no. It's a pet thread. Then...bam.

I can't eat any sea life other than fish...and even then, just the typical "fish" types (no catfish for me).

As for catching them, yes they're easy to catch. I prefer to use a net behind the crayfish rather than a container because you can yank it out of the water faster and he won't have time to escape vs. a container. Just scare them into the net and you're golden

Also, wouldn't trapping them basically force them into fighting inside the trap? Crayfish can't be housed with many others (or even any in some cases) inside salt/freshwater setups. Just a thought. I guess you would have to check it at least once a day.

I just looked and apparently you can just buy a trap but you have to see if you need a permit for it to actually use it :strokebeard:

well, I should say don't use water with high/higher concentrations of Chlorine if you plan of keeping them alive.

http://www.h2ou.com/h2wtrqual.htm#Chlorine

Table 3. Effects of chlorine on fish and aquatic organisms

Total chlorine (in mg/L) Effect
0.006                       Kills trout fry in two days.
0.01                         Recommended maximum for all fish and aquatic life.
0.01                         Kills Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon.
0.01-0.05                 Oysters have difficulty pumping water through their bodies.
0.02                         Maximum Brook and Brown Trout can withstand.
0.05                         Maximum amount that can be tolerated by young Pacific Salmon in the ocean.
0.1                           Kills most marine plankton.
0.25                         Only the hardiest fish can survive.
0.37                         Maximum fish can tolerate.
1.0                           Kills oysters.

If anything it's late.  But season came late this year.

Complicated??

I understand chlorine evaporates.  Just stating that if you were to use water with chlorine in your said purging process, you'll have a bunch of dead crawdads in that 24 hours.

Catch crawdads by hand its the most fun. Dive down and just steal him up real quick. The fun part is trying to catch your meal. I spent about 3 hours searching by hand with a group of 5 people and we ended up with around 40 crawdads. I cant wait to go again this summer. The area I go has brownish tinted water but easy visibility with a very strong fast current and giant rocks where lots of crawdads hang around that are like gold mines.

Suck the heads, they are soooo tasty. Its like pure fat/seasoning flavor. Not much can beat lots of tasty free shellfish caught yourself.

When I was a kid and we used to go out into the country we just stuck a stick in the water, they grabbed the stick with their pincers, and you could yank them out.

This was in the midwest though, so maybe they weren't crawdads, but some other kind of crustacean.

Not sure.
