Man finds and uses dad's meth lab
A MAN who found his father’s meth lab in the roof and decided to use it was handed a jail term in Bundaberg Supreme Court yesterday.
The court was told Jared Benjamin Farrant, 21, was planning to make improvements to the home he inherited from his parents when he discovered his dad’s drug lab in the roof cavity, prompting him to use it.
Prosecutor Chris Minnery said when police arrived at Farrant’s Kensington St home on August 4, they heard footsteps and smelt cigarette smoke, but the defendant and his partner, Emmah Louise Hobdell, refused to answer the door, leading police to force entry with a sledgehammer.
Once inside, officers found a drug laboratory in the kitchen, a shopping list of ingredients to make methylamphetamine, and other chemicals and products used to “cook” drugs.
“The prisoner’s fingerprints were all over (the lab),” Mr Minnery said.
Farrant pleaded guilty to one charge of producing dangerous drugs and Mr Minnery said he had a “less than spectacular” history, though none of it was in relation to drug offences.
Defence barrister David Murray said his client had the most “complex and destructive” past he had seen in his 23 years in the business.
Farrant was reduced to tears as Mr Murray summarised his childhood and deaths of both his parents before the offences.
“It is often that a legacy is left by a parent to their child. In this case, it was a house and drug laboratory,” Mr Murray said.
Mr Murray said his client’s father was a “violent and destructive” drug addict who had committed suicide and his mother was an alcoholic whose last words to her son were via a vicious SMS.
Farrant is also accused of breaking into a Bundaberg pharmacy along with another man, Christopher Kaminski, on May 31 and stealing boxes of tablets containing pseudoephedrine.
A balaclava used to mask Kaminski’s face was unknowingly left at the scene and police used DNA from a hair on the mask to locate and question him.
Kaminski, who has already been dealt with in court, made admissions to police, which led them to Farrant in the first place.
Mr Murray said his client was grateful to Kaminski for turning him in to police.
“Your background can fairly be described as a tragic one,” Justice Duncan McMeekin told Farrant.
Farrant was sentenced to 12 months jail with immediate parole for producing drugs.
He is yet to face the break-in charge.

Since when is that probable cause to break down someone's door? Did they have a warrant?

The constitution is still in effect in the USA, however this story happened in Australia.

They may have had a warrant because he broke into a pharmacy and had his DNA evidence, that may have been enough.

Nah it is still in full effect.
There are a few exceptions, but the document stands and provides significant legal protection in all 50 states.

It says in the article that his associate (who was found by DNA evidence in the mask) "made admissions to police, which led them to Farrant in the first place." That was probably how they obtained the warrant.
