found in a horse pasture amongst grass

Is the one on the right a pan subb?
has crowded darker coloured gills, which don't show up so well in that photo. at least on my monitor its just really dark, let me know if should try take a better photo of the gills.
foe on the left? with more browner and non-crowded gills

They both are probably Panaeolus cinctulus, check the spore print color.

They look like Panaeolus cinctulus to me, too. Hope you have more than those two, because you'll need a LOT more for a fun time.

The gills on subbs darken with age. They can be a much lighter shade to start off with.

I am not sure if you were actually trying to answer me, but they are not called "subbs", their correct scientific name is Panaeolus cintulus.

Subbs is short for Panaeolus subbalteatus which is the name for the species that I prefer and has been used to refer to this species for quite some time. What the latest correct scientific name for the species is, is not an issue that at this point in time concerns me overmuch.

Subs sound cooler than Cincs, but cause confusion... especially for you ozzies.

I know they were renamed cinctulus, but still think it's way more fun to call them subbs.
nice finds either way!

spore prints in - the one on the left is a foe the other one seems to have a black sporeprint. tried to take a photo but couldn't get decent lighting will try again when it's sunny. but stem was pretty thin and fragile so maybe it wasn't a subb?

I would not be surprised if one were a subb and the other a foe. Different gill color and the gills of the one on the left extend below the cap margin wiich is common in foes but doesn't occur in subbs. From what I have observed subbs growing amongst grass or on grass clippings often have thin and fragile stems. On dung the stems tend to be thick.

You may have to let it print longer if it hasn't dropped many spores. The prints should be a rich dark black. Thinnest I've seen have been about 2-3mm.

If it looks grayish black, it's a subb. See below.

I've seen on with about 1.5 mm stipe; the cap is almost exactly 1 cm.

These look black-black to me and to myself foe prints appear grey-black being a lighter shade of black. The difference is subtle enough that it can confuse beginners or be difficult to recognise if one is just looking at a pic of a black print but can be easily seen when pics or live prints of the two species are compared side by side. Once one has seen a real live subb print the blackness is so uniquely black that one can easily recognise by sight any live print before them(restricted to foes and subbs of course).
