BRF Jar Contam? Toss 'Em or Wait?
    #14437328 - 05/11/11 09:54 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

\

These poor jars have had a rough 3 weeks.  They started life as a pre-sterilized BRF jar inoculated and stored at @80-82 degrees when mother nature pulled a cruel trick on them and made my FOAF's storage area @ 92 for half the day before it was noticed and they were moved.  Then after the heat wave, they we hovering around 65 for a week in a closet.  For the last week of life they have been a constant 80 degrees in the same closet. They have been handled too much as it is my FOAF's first grow, and he likes to "look" at what's going on. Now that they know that is not ideal, subsequent batches will be handled only when absolutely necessary.  Based on the photos above, should they be tossed or kept and watched?  Thank you in advance for your input.

Thank you for the fast reply!  They have been put in a different room that stays around 72. Should they turn back to white if everything gets cleared up?

They should, but just let them sit in a cool place (i've colonized jars in 50-60 degree temps) for another month. dont mess with them and let them do their thing

Yep, just keep them in a warm dark place and like slapphappypill said do not mess with them and let them do their thing.

No prob man, she's still sleeping but ill let her know when she wakes up :laugh2:

And as an afterthought, ime temps do not matter while colonizing as long as they don't break 80 degrees

myc is pretty baller in fighting contams... before i knew it i had a light reddish contam of somesort throughout 3/4 of a jar (at least).  just a reddish tint to the substrate (if anyone can comment on it that'd be appreciated,  nothing in the contam thread/faq from Anno looks like it)..

i drew some lines along the edges of the myc to watch growth and see if it would start to take back the jar... so far it's truckin along.

that's what i thought.  but the description doesn't quite match

"    This fungus colonizes compost or casing. As spores mature, the color of the mold changes from white to pink, to cherry red, and finally to dull orange. It is slow growing. Spores spread in air, during watering, and on pickers. The lipstick mold utilizes certain fats in the compost. It is an uncommon problem. Control is centered around sanitation. "

it was never white, pink, red, dull orange.  it was always a dull, rust colored orangish-red.  it wasn't slow growing, it appeared to colonize all the mycellium-less substrate in 48 hours.

however i went back and looked and this mold sounds similar, and particularly nasty.

"    Commonly to occasionally seen on agar and grain. Neurospora is fast growing, sometimes taking only 24 four hours to totally colonize a media filled petri dish. It is ubiquitous in nature, occurring on dung, in soils and on decaying plant matter. Since this fungus grows through cotton stoppers or filter discs, a single contaminated jar, though sealed, can spread spores to adjacent spawn jars within the laboratory. This condition is more likely if the filter discs or cotton plugs are the least bit damp; or if the external humidity is high. Furthermore, Neurospora spores germinate more readily at elevated temperatures. The pink mold seen in mushroom culture is most frequently Neurospora sitophila, a pernicious contaminant that is difficult to eliminate. All infected cultures should be removed as soon as possible from the laboratory and destroyed. A thorough cleaning of the laboratory is absolutely necessary. If contamination persists, remove all spawn and start anew."

but, my mold was never pink, it's just been rusty red-orange.    it's not even particularly fuzzy...  it's just like the whole substrate changed colors.

i'll get pics later.  it doesn't look anything like Pink Mold's example pictures, and isn't growing on the mycellium,  it's growing on the substrate and the mycellium is taking over.

Ya for sure pics would help a ton, but it seems your on the right track for diagnosing it, and it seems that your answer pretty much stays the same so far (you may need to toss em).

Now im a noob, so the listick was my first and most educated guess, after that i was probably as clueless as you. Needless to say, ill follow and check those pics, but my advise at this point has kinda dried up, gunna need a pro to step in here soon ;D

Get those pics up and the pro's start swarming like 'green snakes in a sugar cane field'
