Two arrested over $50m heroin haul
May 12, 2011 - abc.net.au
Two men have been arrested in the biggest heroin seizure by Australian
authorities in nearly a decade.
Customs seized more than 40 kilograms of the drug stashed in furniture
at Port Botany in Sydney's south earlier this month.
The furniture had arrived in a shipment from Malaysia.
Two Malaysian nationals were arrested in Sydney last night and charged
with importing the heroin.
Customs spokeswoman Catherine Asbridge says the drugs were worth nearly
$50 million.
"This is the largest seizure we've had for some time. Most of the
seizures over the last decade have been smaller quantities. The last
large seizure was actually in 2002 and that was 367 kilos," Ms Asbridge
said.
Heroin use has plummeted in Australia over the past decade but the
Australian Federal Police says the drug trade is booming because of the
high value of the Australian dollar.
Commander Brian McDonald says cocaine is the biggest problem.
"We are working with our partners about some international
organisations that are now targeting Australia that have not done so in
the past," he said.
The two men arrested last night are due to face court today.
They face potential life sentences in jail if convicted.
This is just going to create scarcity for that local area, driving up prices... and since junkies have to have their dope it's going to drive up crime to support the more expensive habit. Not only that, but other dealers are going to sweep in and try and grab the market creating more violence and crime...
Thanks prohibition

it doesn't matter if you make a seizure, people are still going to try to get drugs. the only reason cops keep busting people is because it's always going to be an easy way for them to steal more money, but they'll keep getting killed as long as they keep doing it.
go ahead and keep getting killed, dumbass pigs. lives can't be replaced, but drugs can. i also think "good" cops are no different than "bad" cops. if "good" cops were actually good, then they would be trying to convince the bad ones not to make drug busts knowing it's pure stupidity.
Aussies are good people. Their cops, on the other hand, probably use the same cop math used in the USA. That is to figure out the highest conceivable price, double it, then add a zero for good measure.
Keep in mind drugs in Oz are generally a lot more expensive than drugs are, especially coke, in other countries. Considering coke has to make a 10,000 mile journey and the added expenses. It's always best to ignore monetary values given in the news stories, it's meaningless anyway. 40kg, regardless if it's worth $100K or $50M or some other arbitrary figure, is still 40kg. And of course, thanks to prohibition, there is plenty more on the next ship.

must be some good shit :]
Yeah. Gotto put into the equation how dealing works with these subs though. you cut it, you sell it, cut it again, and again, and again, then sell it for double what you got it for. good buisness main. No wonder the US runs all the opium in the middle east.
