Big fungi growing on my street

I thought these are probably edible - anyone know what they are? The sun has dried them out quite badly by the time I got this photo. I walked past them everyday for a week thinking "I'll take a photo next time".

Dunno, maybe give a little more description. Id say some sort of Agaricus.

I agree with Agaricus. We need a much more detailed description to have any chance at the species.

Note that many Agaricus are poisonous, so don't eat them until you have a good ID. Things you need to note are the odor and any bruising reaction (cut them in half vertically and scrape with the edge of your knife to bruise - it can take up to an hour for the color changes). Those might not be fresh enough to get the bruising to work properly.

Happy mushrooming!

The caps look kinda sorta like Agaricus californicus, but the stems are way too thin. That's the only one I can think of right now.

hey wombat

Do you think these are similar??

I found this group last week...definately some sort of Agaricus...did you break the flesh and smell it? These had a strong 'chemical' smell like phenol. The only example I could find with this description is A. xanthoderma?? for the smell, but it didn't appear to be yellow-staining which is apparently a characteristic, so I'm not too sure...

No, I don't think they're very similair. Sort of the same. The ones I found looked more like big versions of what you buy in the shops. The caps are only cracked due to the sun, I think.

MJ, they had dark brown - almost black - gills.
