i know there have been other posts on recommended reading before , but they are kind of old so i figure its worth another go with a slightly different twist . my two favourite books are "breaking open the head" by daniel pinchbeck and "the teachings of don juan" by carlos castenada , i intend to buy more of castenada's work when i find some spare cash . the books i will sell or burn will be "the psychedelic experience" by tim leary and maybe "the archaic revival" by t. mckenna . so what are your must haves and what are some stinkers to avoid ? peace .

I think you have your burn and keep list backwards.
Burning Mckenna and Leary's work would be a major slap in the psychedelic experience's face.
Isn't castenada's work known to be fiction? I remember hearing that somewhere.

I dunno about that, I mean there's no omnipresent force out in the universe that burning the book is going to affect obviously.
But its a major slap in the face of the pioneers who paved the way for us all to be here talking to each other. Without Leary or Mckenna the shroomery may never have even existed.
Burning the work they spent their time on earth writing for us just seems disrespectful to me.

isnt one of those turds the reason psychedelics are banned ? thats what i call a slap in the face . have you read the psychedelic experience ? i found it to be somewhat useless and oh so boring . im aware castenada is widely considered a fake , yet i have found his work useful and entertaining .

that "turd" is probably the reason you know the word LSD in the first place
I don't have to read Leary's work to know he was an incredible human being, do what you want dude there your books, I just think its disrespectful to burn an authors work cause it doesnt agree with your psychedelic views, or that you find it pointless.

fair call , after re reading some pages of the archaic revival i realize they were hasty and not well thought out words . his writing style isnt to my liking but its defitely not a book to sell or destroy . i think the psychedelic underground would still be large even if those writers never existed , but also acknowledge thier achievements ... good and bad ..."turn on tune in and drop out" was the slogan that i knew before i knew who said it .

I think its silly to blame Leary, lsd would have been made illegal if he had never existed. Just look at RC's currently. All it takes for a substance to get prohibited is a few flubups doing something stupid, like killing a goat while cross-dressing, taking a gigantic dosage and ODing, or running down the streets naked.
As for books, I would recommend, "Acid Dreams" by Lee and Shlain.

The best books IMO are Huxley's Doors of Perception and Heaven and Hell. Anything McKenna has written are great too. I also love Ram Dass' books but they're more about spiritual practice than drugs.

Leary was not solely responsible for smearing the image of psychedelics but he did play a very, very large part in it. All Leary did was for himself; he was a self-centered, egotistical, and reckless rock-star wannabe. As far as "RCs" go, who knows what could have been had Leary and his ilk not ran ramped in the 60s? There was very legitimate research into LSD, etc. There was much interest in these wonderful compounds and their potential uses in psychotherapy. LSD could be schedule 2 or 3 today if Leary wasn't around, who knows?
Of course someone else could have just taken his place.

Haven't read a lot of books about psychedelics except for The Spirit Molecule and a few of Ram Dass's works. Both of which I highly recommend
As far as burning any books? I don't think I have that much hate in me to burn something that an author took [years] to write lol

I haven't had the chance to read a lot of psychedelic literature but The Doors of Perception was quite good. Huxley's style and insights, though not perfect in my opinion, are quite enlightening and thought-provoking. I think almost any book regarding psychedelics is worth something. Everyone has their own insights, opinions, and rituals and reading them is interesting at least.
