Hey Chaos was that at the patch we went to on last years hunt? Noticed theyre all getting a bit dry, and when i went there today there were none there

Here's some pics from a friday afternoon hunt plus some from today.

Fridays hunt (whats left after me and a friend ate a couple of handfuls):

Today:

Im surprised how many are around considering how dry its been this last week. Weather didnt turn out as good as id hoped looking at the forecast.

Also a note for people who have to hunt in very obvious places with lots of people around, bring a notebook. I was trying to wait out a guy  right next to my patch who just wouldnt leave. Pulled out my notebook and started taking fake notes, while picking shrooms everynow and then. When i left he asked whether i was a botanist. Told him im a 2nd year biology student, specialising in fungi and plant life (which is true). Ended up having a great conversation with the guy.

Seriously, tell people you're studying, and they think you're awesome

No I stopped off at the patch on the Central Coast.

Sounds like there are more people out hunting in Sydney.

Looks like your season is starting out well Johnny.

We got a lot of rain down my way on Monday and it is freezing at the moment - Hoping for some more rain over the coming days and to hopefully get out for another hunt if I get some time over the weekend.

Ah Central coast, that's not sydney

Season has definitely started in Syd Locky. Thats where all my finds have come from. Started last week of April. We need more rain though to keep things going nicely.

Cheers again ouijah. seriously though i cant believe i hadnt thought of that before. He was so happy to see someone out and about 'doing research'. And then after im done hunting he's wishing me all the best, when usually im trying to avoid people at all costs. Hunting just got easier

im a newb to finding subs :frown:

There are woodchip gardens around, should i check em out? and should i focus on hunting chips that have bushes and scrub around them insted of the ones out in the blazin sun? i dont have much time to hunt around town.

I live on a property with cows and a river with plenty of trees, red gums, etc etc, and this is where i would like to hunt. The river flooded awile ago, about 20 meters up bank, would this have of effected my chances of subs growing?
Ill go for a hunt and if i dont find any, ill hunt the chips...

Yes pine is good. Personally, I would way 5days to a week after rain stop for maximum reward.

ahhhh! ><

We got there, and there was ice on the ground, had a little look around, pretty sure we didnt find anything, it must have snowed overnight?

we were up around bondo...

had a little look, but then it eventually started to hail a little (i thought it was light hail as it was like little balls of ice, gf reckons it was snow)

so yeah, another non-successful hunt

all good.

I think i might just wait for the right temps around my hometown and go checking out areas around eucalyptus trees...

So they grow around the trees or off dead ones?

are there any specific types that they favor?

Anything i should know?

We had a couple of mm rain yesterday with pretty good temps coming up so i might go for a little look around on saturday and sunday and hope that i find something!

I would love to have a spot in my hometown, it's my lifelong dream!

from what I've read snow and ice are no good for subs, not 100% on that though as it doesn't snow where I'm from.
But I would imagine that anytime its near freezing point that the mycelium wouldn't be able to make it through the ground to fruit as it would be frozen solid.

Generally look for cold temps but not that cold, 5-15 degrees celsius is generally the right temps.
Subs eat wood and certain kinds of mulch, so anywhere where theres decent amount of rainfall and lots of bark could be a spot.

You have to remember though that even though conditions are perfect, the spot is perfect, the habitat is perfect they still just might not grow there.

My friend said that "they fruit from pine trees"

Can they come from eucalyptus trees alone? silly question but confrimation is always nice

Will be good once i finally find some, stop hassling you and start providing pictures of my finds

Pine trees don't even need to be present, they are just common around them.  There are no pine trees where I hunt whatsoever.

Good luck

So not true. I don't know where you are getting your information...
I have found heaps of them in snow, in fact I think they love it.
I find more when it snows, as long as its not a thick cover.
Example from last year:

They can get a bit manky though...

Like I said it doesn't snow where I'm from, I'm just assuming based on how the frost f**ks up the subs sometimes.
I have a real hard time drying subs after they have been in really really cold weather, most turn moldy. Might just be my drying process though I guess.
I thought below freezing the mycelium would freeze solid and not grow the same as when you put it in a freezer.

But it doesn't get as cold below the ground as above when it snows, and that's where most of the mycelium is.
...some snow is ok, if it melts during the day, its even better...
But if its thick, you aren't going to find them under the snow even if they are growing.

i am happy, i just went on a hunt, didnt find any subs but i found a very promising looking area. all along the river with green grass/decaying wood and alot of shade, and there should be good humidity due to the river.

Do you guys find more subs near water?

All my subs come from patches within 100-200m of a creek or river. Not sure if they have any effect though, i think its more to do with finding places with good microclimates i.e. woodchipped/mulchy areas with lots of vegetation to keep the area from drying out too quickly. Or areas where groundwater seeps to the surface (slopes), keeping it nice and moist even when there's been no rain for a while.
