morel?
    #14436139 - 05/11/11 05:56 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

I found this mushroom today out disc golfing. I just wanted to make sure it was a morel since I've never found one before:

Thanks!

Good specimen of a yellow morel, aka common morel

ummm, its not THAT easy to identify a morel... BUT, if its hollow its a true morel... fakes are much more dense. I've heard there's one more similar mushroom to a morel, but I can't find anything to support that comment. I've always ate em if they're hollow.. and I mean hundreds of pounds and I'm still here.

I've looked a couple times this year for morels with no luck.  This is my first year looking for them.  Have only checked one local "park" though.  Probably need to go to something a little larger.

There is only one look alike to the morel which grows in the same habitat. Correct?

There's Verpa bohemica, and Gyomitra esculenta. Gyo's are easier to tell apart but once you learn um all they're really easy to tell.

It's super easy to identify true Morchella. They look nothing like Gyromitra even to the moderately trained eye.
Pro tip: if it looks like a zombie would go "mmmmmmh BRAINS!" then it is a Gyromitra:

I don't think Gyromitra look much like Morchella at all:

Eh it's fairly easy to recognize them once you're familiar with what they look like.  I do agree though if you've never hunted them, there's a chance of a mix-up with the false morel.

False morel (gyromitra)

Verpi: (this might be harder to ID from a true morel, but it's easy to tell because the stem on this goes into the fruit to the top of the cap, however true morels will be attached at the base and do not have a stem in the center of the fruit, it's hollow)
