Story Reuters
Tuesday, April 8, 2003; 6:02 AM SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Most people in San Francisco, home to the nation's strongest anti-war protest movement, back the war against Iraq, as does the rest of California, a poll released on Tuesday found.
A Field poll of 1,006 Californians found that across California, 55 percent strongly approved of U.S. military action to remove Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from power, with another 21 percent expressing some support.
Backing in the San Francisco area, where more than 2,000 anti-war demonstrators have been arrested since the war started, is weaker but still far more than the ongoing series of protests would suggest.
The poll, which has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.2 percent, found 39 percent in the San Francisco strongly supporting the war, with another 24 percent expressing some support. But more than half in the Bay area said Washington should have waited longer to wait for diplomacy to work.
The poll conducted April 1-6 in the nation's most populous state also found 61 percent expressing approval of President Bush's performance, still down from its post-Sept. 11, 2001 high of 74 percent.

Those polls can be slanted based on how they ask the question. I'm sure many of those people are like me, in that even tho they disagreed with the reasons for going to war, they're now hoping we win soon now that we're in there, so it will all be over with.

I'm not surprised by those numbers. Most people have the sense knocked into them when they see cops shooting protestors.

Damn thats weird.
Not like I know everyone in SF, but, due to the fact that I've lived here for a while, and I know quite a few people, I still haven't really met anyone who is for war.
If the this poll was conducted throughout all of California, it makes sense though. San Diego and LA are mainly conservative, and there are a lot of barrel shootin' hicks out in the boondocks. hehe.

Wow, they polled a whole thousand people. Isn't there something like 30 million people in California? It must be accurate.

That's about average. Almost all these polls run from 850 to around 1200 people. The number you will see most often quoted is (for some bizarre reason) just over 1000.
It's been that way for decades. The polling organizations and social statisticians say that if you choose the participants being polled according to the correct criteria, it is possible for a relatively tiny group to accurately (within less than 4%) reflect the opinions of the entire group.
Bottom line -- if you call this poll inaccurate, you must necessarily call all public opinion polls inaccurate, because all of them use exactly the same methods.
