Average time for rye grain pint jar to fully colonize? please help
    #14435457 - 05/11/11 03:41 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I'm going on vacation in about 55 days and I need to know If I have enough time to harvest. I'm going to case using a 50/50 method i found on this site. From your personal experience do you think I will have enough time or should i wait until i get back?

Depends on whether you inoculated with ms or g2g. Ms will probably take about 10 to 14 days IME. G2G probably 6 days.

I've found that rye grain takes considerably shorter to colonize than other grains.  Have you inoculated jars before?  Did you get the moisture content right and have them in a dark humid place? If so, you should easily be able to harvest before your vacation.  I'd say 30 days max before full colonization and 20 days after that for full fruits.  Those are extremely long times too.  Just make sure you shake the jars up every few days while they are colonizing.

I've pretty much got all I want out of brf cakes and I'm going to try my hand at casing grain. Thanks for the quick replies.

you don't "case" grain you spawn it to a bulk sub

agreed. it is a waste of time to case grains. just make a monotub with a 1:1 ratio and you should get quick colonization. let it consolidate and fruit. you should be able to get a flush or 2 in that time frame.

i personally don't like anything involving casing. its just more work and for your time and effort it just never does much (unless it is a species which requires it). good luck man

Do I just mix the colonized grain with whatever bulk sub I want to use and put it in a mono tub? Then just leave it alone without fanning until harvest? Where does it get the moisture from? Maybe someone could explain it better I'm confused. Also, how much grain should i prepare?

well basically what you do is you follow this suggestion:

(he is referring to the one that says "EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW")

i suggest starting with a nice grain (rye or wbs). then proceed to a coir substrate (damion5050's coir tek is fantastic). that should be made following one of the guides about monotubs (i prefer monstermitch's). after that you pick em and dry em out somehow (please for the love of god don't ask me how. just look yourself) and then you eat em and have a blast.

Ok, I read damion5050's coir tek and have a better understanding now. Only question I have is when you introduce light and fae there is no misting? It can't be this easy

it really is. just don't get carried away and take the top off to stare at whats going on all the time and you will be ok. and after each flush dunk the whole thing if you are able to.

the hardest part to all of this is practicing sterile technique. as long as you don't have contams everything else is pretty flexible with you making mistakes.

55 days should be enough time, but keep in mind 14 day colonization
times for ms are varying and not written in stone.
ive got some jars i noc'd on the 14th of april that are just now finishing up. so thats 4 weeks tomorrow. they should be ready
for g2g by this weekend.
