I wonder how classical music would have sounded...
    #14435613 - 05/11/11 04:15 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

if its composers took maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad psychedelics. Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, any and all classical composers, operating in extremely psychotropic-altered senses and working their ineffable orchestral majick. I surmise that their work would have been 9001x more complex and layered and it would have caused the eventual liquidation of the brain of anybody who heard it, the composers themselves would have probably developed carpal tunnel within 5 years, and the universe itself would probably collapse on itself from the impossible multitude of notes, technicality, majestic progressions and sheer win.

A good buddy of mine (used to be a huge metalhead, is now EXTREMELY into classical, dude knows his shit) and I were discussing a while back that the next logical progression for music at this point is the conjoining of classical and psychedelic influences (both in regards to sound and in its methods of composition). Considering the nature of both I wholeheartedly agree.

I think jazz is kinda what a classical composer on psychedelics would sound like :lolsy:

I personally have been very interested in integrating the complex counter point and harmonic functions of the baroque/classical eras with the more complex syncopated rhythms of jazz and the extreme temporal and emotional variety of death metal :gameover:

It is called Deathspell Omega.

Deathspell Omega - Chaining The Katechon (Part I)

Deathspell Omega - Chaining The Katechon (Part II)

Meh, the danceable yet boring 1/3 beats of most modern electronic music are almost a step back from the rhythmic variety that dance tracks in the 1700's-1800's contained.

I've recently been integrating classical aesthetics into my music composing, in particular atonality and modality I've been experimenting with (thank you DsO). At present my sound is "psychedelic neo-classical metaphysical ambient" and I've been working on 1 song for... 3 days straight now.

PSYCHEDELICS + CLASSICAL + ELECTRONICA = FUTURE OF MUSIC :kingtard:

That was EMerson Lake and Palmer on the Album Brain Salad Surgery, but the composition is actually by an Italian guy named Alberto Ginasera.

Venetian Snares makes IDM using a lot of orchestral and jazz samples -- not quite what you described in the OP, but still awesome.

I would LOVE to see a true Psychedelic Symphony though. :awesomenod:

Ah, awesome!!!! My friend (the one I mentioned in the OP) can play stuff like this on guitar:

and always links me to videos of beautiful, crazy technical, emotive classical guitar pieces. The emotion in these pieces is so powerful... I really want to learn to play in that style. When he gets on I'll have him send me some more videos so I can plug them here!

Hey, when I'm done with this one song I've been working on for 3 days do you guys want it? I'm not going to be releasing it for like 5 more albums but I'm feeling bad that I keep saying "yeah this isn't my real shit.." with all the stuff I've released here so far (that I made years ago) and just leaving you guys wondering but you're all fucking awesome so, why not give you guys a gift? Is that okay? It's my closest take on "psychedelic neo-classical metaphysical ambient" that I can, movements, composition, etc.

If you guys can found me a psychedelic electronic classical ambient artist that'd be greatly appreciated! For now I'm going to attempt to fill that role for myself

I think those kind of geniuses, whether musicians, philosophers, physicists, mathematicians, artists, ect.., are that why partially because these are already in a psychedelic trance like state.
But I still wonder how adding psychedelics to their psychedelia would have turned out.

Or maybe the psychedelic state is more like how these men and women actually think.

Human psyche > psychedelics, by FAR

BOOM!  You're welcome

This one gets really good toward the end

--------------------
Did he dream about dragons? Did he dream about deer? Did he whisper  he names of friends who were near?
What songs did they play, and how far away? Why did he whisper, why did she scream?
What does the sound of a screen door mean?
Who talks on the hill? Who goes to the cellar, can you feel the chill? Where does the river, when will the wind?
How far are the mountains? Where do they end? Why would the church?
Did the service begin? Tell me who died, and tell me who cried.
Help me hide in the skin of a deer, my zippered-up bag in the mouth of a stag so swiftly I go through rows of does,
it flows, it flows, it flows, it flows all over the hill where the green grass grows.

Or maybe the psychedelic state is more like how these men and women actually think.

Human psyche > psychedelics, by FAR

I can vouch for this. I've always thought in a psychedelic way, but until I did psychedelics, it was just basic thought. I had nothing to compare it to. Psychedelics just kind of made my way of thinking seem more tangible. Now it's like I can see my psyche, but I still can't describe it. If I do it just comes out as "fractals and shit blughhfdgdfv" and a long string of metaphors that only I get and broken descriptions of things that really don't make any sense. I can't even really explain how I understand my psyche any different. It's like having seen colors your whole life and then suddenly realizing that colors exist, ya know?

I recently bought Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force guitar tablature book. :awegroove:

I'm not a big fan of his later work but that album is incredible.

Yea it is.  I even got a 1989 SOnic BLue Yngwie signature strat, its the cat's ass.  His later album that I like was Eclipse.

Very heavy classical influence, but he overdoes it.

Nope they're all Silvus Leopold Weiss songs :awesome:

What would be a good deathspell song to learn? I'm still not too familiar with them, but I mostly play the faceless, between the buried and me.. and the likes so a brutal challenge would be certainly welcome :headbanger:

Maybe I should try playing on one first (8 string) though.. My hands aren't exactly huge.

That is a newer one than mine, I can tell by the large 70's style headstock.  Mine I got new in 1989, the second year they made them.  THey still had vintage headstocks and american standard trems.  I had an '88 before also, wish I hadn't sold it.  It was Candy red with a rosewood board.

That's a bit of a doozy, because no tabs for most of their songs exist, considering NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THE FUCK THE GUITARIST IS DOING :justdontknow:

Guy does alot of inverted chords I think... alot of atonality and dissonance. The songs are very classically-influenced (their longer songs flow much more like movements), and the riffs are VERY mechanical, i.e. no human should be able to play them so precisely and accurately.

You'd have to figure them out by ear, but if by some cosmic chance you DO figure out what they are playing, then I will love you forever and bow at your feet for years to come:

Deathspell Omega - Epiklesis II/Malconfort

Si Monumentum Requires Circumspice means If you seek His monument, look around you

I'm going to get that tattooed on my left forearm in the very near future. :prance:

The songs on SMRC are pretty easy to figure out, and I sort of have this song down:

Deathspell Omega - Odium Nostrum

I've never seen a lot of the chords they use... very tasty dissonance  :awegroove:

The best song from SMRC, and I think tabs exist for it:

Deathspell Omega - Carnal Malefactor

They even throw in a long section of gregorian chanting... so majestic.

And yeah, I plan on getting the words SI MONUMENTUM REQUIRES CIRCUMSPICE on the side of my forearm, on my right bicep I plan on getting the SMRC cover art

Unrelated but I'm also getting नमस्ते (namaste - the God in me bows to the God in you, the hindu lettering though) on my right forearm side and on the inner forearm I'm getting Alex Grey's Theologue painting:

But yeah I love how Deathspell Omega utilize atonality and dissonance ALOT in their music (valid musical expressions but RARELY used to the extent they do and so excellently) and I've always been a huge fan of dissonance in music :psychsplit:

Not quite as epic as E.S. Posthumus in my opinion and sometimes strays into "trailer music" territory

I'll have a look around and see if I come up with anything better
