friend admitted to crime

So my friend was sent out to get food while at work. There, she claims she found a purse and gave it to the employees there. After she got back from getting the food, the customer followed about 5-10 minutes later and was upset in the store yelling about some stolen money. The cops shortly followed.
The lady had already gotten her purse back from the place and claims there is some money missing...it wasn't much and the friend offered to pay her the money and did pay her the money.
The cop had pulled the usual of asking the same question differently 20 times and started to tell my friend that if she didnt admit he was going to take her to jail for petit theft, showing of the handcuffs, etc..
She admitted that she took the money and the cop made her sign a paper that says her charge and court date...there was no written statement or anything like that...
What do you guys think about this in a nutshell? I can give more details if needed, but I didnt leave much out.

Well, it sounds like your friend fucked up. Took money from a purse and returned it and then got caught by admitting to the theft.
Now if the friend did not actually take the money, your friend is even dumber for one, offering to pay for the loss and two actually admitting to it.
That is if I followed the story right. It just all sounds a little crazy.

Good question, but I have a feeling if the she tried to beat the charge the cop could just come in and testify. There could be more to it but I don't think it looks good for her. Probably some small time charge, a slap on the wrist though.
Of course I am not a lawyer nor do I pretend to be one so....

yes. verbal confessions are more than enough to convict. while they normally like to have a written statement it is by no means required. at least in the state where i live this is the case. for your friend to get out of this entirely she would need a lawyer to prove some type of coercion on the part of the police or a technicality that could get the whole case removed. depending on the charge it honestly might be cheaper and easier for her to just deal with a fine and some community service. a court case would drag out for a while and cost at least a couple thou. but i don't know the particulars of the case.

From a legal perspective, its bad. You can not take back a confession and nothing needs to be signed for it to be valid. When the officer tells the court that she admitted to the crime, she will almost certainly be convicted.

word.

Next time tell her to practice your 5th and 1st amendment at the same time by telling the crazy bitch to fuck off and not take her bad day out on you. (don't say that to a cop)

Yep, I agree.
Had she not confessed (is she guilty?) she would most likely have had a very strong case if they charged her. It would have been better for her if she had just taken the whole damn thing I'd imagine- had they detained her immediately she could always argue via lawyer that she was intending on returning it, but providingn a purse without some of the money is a difficult thing to make consistant with legal actions.
Cops can arrest you and there's little you can do even if it was illegally done. People need to stop worrying so much about jail and be concerned with conviction. That said, hopefully the lawyer will bring the threats to the court's attention. Confessions made pursuant to illegal threats are suspect: such as those made on the basis of being threatened with arrest if not provided.

^^^ SO true. I just got done with my case that got drug out over about 9 months. I got arrested for 8 charges and thrown in jail with a 57k$ bail. I went to school with the cop that arrested me and he fed me the whole turn yourself in and I will lower the charges and you will only get a few years. Then when I got transfered from one jail to another he was the one that picked me up to transfer me and tried again telling me all kinds of bullshit about evidence and statements from my friends that were with me and knew I did it. I didn't tell him shit and neither did my friends. Turns out all he had was evidence putting the three of us in the area at the time with nothing to prove it was me. All they really knew was it was one of us and suspected it was me. I was looking at 10 years in prison but got off with a 500$ fine and a years probation. All because I kept my mouth shut and my friends did the same.
