G2G help
    #14434603 - 05/11/11 12:05 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

So i did some g2g transfers a week or so ago, split some half pint pf jars (brf) into quarts with brf as well. Wondering about an expected timeline and optimal conditions. Should I give them any light? How long do they take usually? Did i need to cut the transfered chunks into very little pieces? Some are fairly large although partially submerged in the new substrate. Heres one of the 3, i can actually see some white fuzzy starting around the top, probably cant see in the pic but looks like its colonizing.

This is unconventional, but if it works it'll work pretty quickly.

sooo...

you did a BRF to BRF transfer?

a G2G is "Grain to Grain"....grain meaning: wild birdseed, etc.

I'm no expert...but I don't think a BRF to BRF transfer is going to be successful.

BRF is hard to shake in order to spread the colonized material through the uncolonized material...

but, I think you should still try. But don't expect for it to take off right away. It might just colonize on the top and then stop there if it can't reach through anymore of the BRF.

EDIT: NO LIGHT. you should put them in the same conditions as you did for the original jars....no light, higher temps, etc.

I predict that it will stall at the bottom of the jar and take over a month to fully colonize. Sorry I have hust had bad results like that with jars bigger than a half pint with BRF.

I also think you should change the name of this thread to F2F or V2V transfers, G2G is grain to grain. BRF jars are not grain jars.

That being said :goodluck: hope it works!

brf is very susceptible to contams and a bunch of other problems with transfers like this. if you are interested in this type of transfer then you should move onto actual grains.

WHAT!?! (haha) oh...the light thing?? i dunno...i keep mine in a tub with the lid on and they usually get to 100% between 3-6 weeks. depending on the strain and whether or not it was knocked up with a syringe or a G2G.

I haven't done BRF in over 5 years...I don't remember how long it took for those to fully colonize. I do remember it taking extremely longer than WBS. that's why i made the switch!

badda boom.
:dancingshroom:

AND spicerkid....I would definitely try using grains next time. IMHO, it works way better, faster, easier, and cheaper. and lookit, you've already got the appropriate sized jars! You can even do a BRF to Grain transfer. As long as your able to shake the substrate inside the jars, you're golden.

PLUS! if you have half pints from previous BRF cake grows, you can throw WBS (or your preferred grain) in those, PC them, knock them up, and use them specifically for G2G transfers. Then you have a constant supply of colonized inoculation material to keep everything going for-ev-errrr. Plus, the little jars colonize SUPA FAST.

I have been doing this, and it works great: When I do the G2G transfers, I take a nice long stemmed sundae spoon and push the colonized material down into the jar. I've had quart jars colonize in no time using that method. Make sure to practice sterile procedures: i.e. gloves, alcohol swabbing the spoon, face mask, etc. (or a glove box if you're fancy)

GOOD LUCK!

sorry for the long response. I am high and like the clicky noise of my keyboard. :bigjoint:

alright thanks. i know g2g is technically grain to grain but i didnt know how to prepare any other kind of substrate. makes sense that the larger grains would mix up better though i hadnt thought of that. Can somebody link me their favorite g2g tek? or at least spawn to grain? I'm new at all this, tryin to nail down my method. I was lookin at this tek for jar transfers in the future:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/8508523

thanks cap though ill prolly switch to using WBS after this, or mycobags. Mycobags just seem pretty easy on principle but so does grain. do you need a PC for WBS? The reason we stuck with BRF was b/c we could just steam it in a pot.

I think you'll find the Rye Prep video and the Grain to Grain transfer videos helpful.

Unfortunately, I have to give your brf to brf transfer a 0% to 1% chance of success.

thanks, ill look into those. One of the BRF jars is looking promising albeit slow, hopefully its not contam because I can see some sort of fungus setting in around the top layer so im hoping for the best.
