What is the basis for Swelling = Bad?
    #14432215 - 05/10/11 10:01 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I've asked this question many times.  1 chiropractor, 1 masseuse, 1 football coach and 1 kinesiology professor have all told me about the R.I.C.E. method of muscle injury treatment (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate).  I've got no problem R., C. and E., but the standardized method of icing soft tissue injuries doesn't make sense to me.  Isn't the body's swelling (increased blood flow to the area) a sign that its at work repairing?  I've had a few rather bad muscle strains in my back/legs and it seemed like icing it made everything get much more tense/tight and inhibited my return to a full range of motion.  Heat usually felt good, and seemed to keep my range of motion intact.

When I say this, the reply is usually something like, "Swelling causes pain, so ice to reduce pain."  What if I don't care about the pain, being solely interested in the body's ideal homeostatic healing state?  Again, Rest, Compression and Elevation all make sense to me, but can someone give me a scientific reason why swelling (as a bodily response, not an injury indicator) is something that we want to inhibit directly after a soft tissue injury?

Oh, and make an erection joke if you want, the title does allow.

With the exception of grammatical corrections, everything I say is completely false and without foundation.

to summarize it partially depends on the injury.  For example, many spinal injuries the paralysis does not come from the injury itself but the swelling that comes later.  Also, we're assuming this is injury based swelling.  There's a good bit to it, but a very simple to understand one would be microbial infections.  Most nasty infections like staph are anaerobes or partial anaerobes, meaning they dislike oxygen.  If you have swelling, blow flow sucks and the amount of air diminishes allowing for not only reduced innate immune system response but also bacteria to potentially fuck your shit up.

swelling is a body response to heal that portion of the body that is injured. All the blood rushes there to have more white blood cells fight off the invaders.

If its all over your body. Fill a bathtub up with water and put lots of ice in like 20lbs ice at least. Get in for 20 secs if you can last that long, get out, repeat 3-4 times. I do it before a racquetball tournament and its as if im new again.....
