Raised Bed/Square Foot Garden
    #14430948 - 05/10/11 05:35 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I'm planning a small (4x4 ft) raised bed garden for this year and figured the "square foot garden" way of design seemed the easiest way to get started. Is anyone familiar with gardening with raised beds or square foot gardening?

I live in southern Ontario so it would be hardiness zone 6. I plan on growing cherry tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, lettuce, hopefully some Yams (I hope its not too late for those already) and assorted herbs/flowers or something. I know its a little late to start from seeds for sweet potatoes and Tomatoes but I plan on buying some already sprouted Tomatoes.

I made a quick design of what I'm hoping will work, here it is
What do you think? is there anything wrong or that I should change? Also what do you suggest I fill in for the assorted herbs and flowers at the bottom? what would be beneficial to the other plants or easy to grow? What are your favourites?

move your basil in with your tomatoes, plant it densely, usually with a
raised bed weeds are less of an issue than direct soil planting but the
dense planting will choke out any weeds as well as provide a bit of shade in
the root zone, the tomatoes flavor greatly benefits from the basil as well

lettuce, carrots, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, cabbage, mustard and many
other veggies can benefit from the chives, they help to repel aphids,
beetles and the carrot rust fly. plant them in close proximity

plant dill, thyme, oregano, savory, beets, parsnips and salsify with your
sweet potatoes and allow a few of the pole beans to run along the ground with
the sweet potato vines, dont plant more than a few thought, sweet potatoes
are heavy feeders and like a lot of room, if anything plant them near the
edge and drape the vines to the ground

your cucumbers will like the company of beans, beets, radishes and dill,
if you plant the dill try and keep it away from your lavender and tomatoes

this should help you to get a lot out of your small space as well as help
to benefit the plants you're planting in many ways including pest control
and flavors

Thanks for the great advice  Think I might replace the potatoes with some bell peppers cause I fear its a little late in the year for potatoes, especially if I still gotta wait for some to sprout eyes.
