To Birth or not to Birth?

Hello! I ahve some jars done PFTEK style and there are little tiny shrooms starting to grow in the jars. They just completed filling in all white, but from what I have read i should wait a week before birthing and dunking? If the shrooms are already growing on the cake still in the jar, do i need to wait any longer to birth them? Also what are your opinions on dunking in water for a day and rolling in vermiculite? Thanks for any help!

If they're starting to pin invitro, then it's time to birth, regardless if you let it consolidate or not. Birth 'em, rinse 'em, roll 'em in vermiculite and let 'em do their thing!
Feel free to post a couple pics if you like, but from what it sounds like, you should be fine.

If there are pins invitro I would not roll in verm, rather I would soak them only 12 hours at most and sprinkle verm onto them carefully to try not to disturb any of the pins. The pins can abort because of a dunk or if they are squooshed when rolling. I just take my cakes with invitros and put them right in the SG in a plate or jar lid with water in it, then I dunk and roll a week later after I harvest the invitros. I have lost many a pin when doing a 24 hour dunk, they always seem to turn black and abort.

dunk for now i dont know if rolling them is best if they already started pinning but after fist flush dunk them again to rehydrate them for your second flush and repeat after every flush. your jars may have been exposed to too much light that may be why the started pinning

FAE is #1 pinning trigger, light just tells them which way is up and gives them energy to grow in the night. The reason that they say light is a pinning trigger is because it helps the FAE evaporate moisture, evaporation of moisture from the sub is a #1 pinning trigger also because it is the FAE and light that evaporates the fine droplets of moisture triggering the pinning. That is just the way I understand it, I could be wrong, but not likely after all my months of reading. JMHO

This is incorrect, the first pinning trigger is full colinisation.
Light doesnt tell them which way to grow , infact they use gravity more than light to know which way is up. Ligght is infact a pinning trigger and is very important in fruit body development. frutis grow muych healthier and larger in the presence of bright daylight.

I beg to differ, cubes are also phototrophic, I have had a few tubs where almost every pin curved towards the light. I have one now that has the light on the opposite side of the tub as the last sub that was in it and they are growing to the opposite side as last grow, towards the light. Here are some pics with what I believe to be proof and RR even confirmed my suspicion. I can also find the RR post and or take some pics of my new tub with all the pins leaning towards the light source, kicker is that they will also grow towards fresh air supply Notice how they curve towards the light...

This is the tub that had the light directly over top, It now has the light on one of the short ends and close to every pin is leaning towards the short side of the tub that has the light on it. I will go take a pic if you don't believe me and look up that RR quote in my posts if you still don't believe me.
Sometimes there is an odd one in the bunch that wants to do things their own way but it is still growing towards the light in the middle.
Completely agree about full colonization though, just always seem to leave it out.

The force of gravity tells the mushrooms which direction to grow, not light. They may orient their caps toward bright light, but that's because light is an energy source, and they want to position themselves to get the most out of it (like in your pics, 3n1gm4).
They'll still grow vertically (for the most part) in complete darkness. They may be weak and spindly from the lack of light, but they'll still grow upwards.

You are partly wrong, I have a tub right now that I have been rotating the light from end to end every day and the mushrooms are growing in a spiral towards the light like a corkscrew, RR even confirmed my theory. You are correct, they will grow straight up in total darkness but they will also grow towards light from which they derive energy.

What mushrooms do not need is light to 'tell' them which way to grow. They'll grow opposite gravity in total darkness.
Here's a picture of penis envy which was turning toward a light source near the floor for exactly this kind of demonstration. RR

What would happen if you had the light under a sub directly on a GH rack with bottom pins, my guess is that they would grow straight down?

Yea after re-reading my post, I was trying to think of a way to edit it to make it sound better. I guess what I was trying to say was that gravity, light and air all effect the orientation of the mushrooms to some extent, but light alone won't "tell" the mushroom which way to grow. Either way, we're both right. veda_sticks too.

I'd imagine they'd still want to turn upwards, away from the pull of gravity, then try to turn themselves so the cap faces the light, and they'd end up all crooked and 'S' shaped.
RR pretty much nailed it with that pic of the PEs, I think.
