I thought my jars were fully colonized but now I'm not too sure..
The jars are fully covered but i can see brown (brf) through the myc.. like I said I can only see it UNDER a layer of myc but dunno.. I dont have pics now but i'll post some later. Everything is colonized but the bottoms look like this:

Its fully colonized but wait another 3 or 4 days to ensure full colonization on the inside. You can put them in fc now but they will just sit their until they are ready. So better just wait a few more days.

One sure-fire way to know jars are done is when they start to shrink and condensation forms between the jar and the cake. That means the cake has shifted to consuming-the-substrate mode instead of simply colonizing it. It's ready for birth when you see that happening, you'll recognize it when you see it in a few days I bet.

Mine are the same way, when they get like that, if they stall a bit, I just give them a couple wacks upside down (if you have a dry verm layer for protection), to loosen the cake from the jar and then I put them back into the incubator for a couple days and the bottoms will fully colonize in a couple days. This also works great for stalled jars which have a little bit to go on the bottom. This is very common when using the narrow half pint jars. I now mostly use the widemouth, they're more expensive, but they are shallow and wide so the bottoms colonize much more quickly. I've had many many incidences where there was a small corner, or even the bottom 1/8" of substrate that didn't colonize, and the jars would stay like that for days. Then I discovered the "whack" technique and that has always worked. Just give 'em a couple whacks on wood and the cake will come away from the jar just a little giving the myc. room to grow and air to grow in. In the long run however, if you still want to do jars, use the shallow ones. I always use jars for new species/experiments since they are pretty much the safest way to go for most things. If you want to bulk up a little with jars, you can always spawn to bulk, but, you should use a grain jar if you want to do that. BRF spawn to bulk doesn't work nearly as well. Hope that helps,

Thanks a lot, I wanted to get wide mouth but all I could find for the time were tall ones. I was just excited to get started. I'm pretty sure walmart has wide mouth, I will def be getting those from now on.. I will try the tap on 1 of my jars that has like 3% to go and has been there for a day or so.. its like 5 days behind the rest
