EvilMushroom666's Wedge Tek V 2.0 3

NOTE: Sending the mycelium of an active psilocybin producing species in the mail is HIGHLY illegal and not what this TEK is intended for. This TEK was made to show Shroomerites how to share LEGAL edible and medicinal mushroom cultures with friends from around the world at the cost of sending a regular letter or bubble mailer.
Months back I started my journey of finding a cheap reliable method for send edible culture wedges to my friends all over the world. All my finding, experiments and failures can be found here:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13496164#13496164
While this method did work MOST of the time, the failure rate was a little to high for my liking. This lead me to experiment with many methods and so far the method below has been the most consistent with 10/10 wedges reaching there destination within the U.S without being sent through the rollers of death.
Quote:
Side Note: This method works when sending wedges from within Canada, or from Canada to U.S/EU Countries. Within the U.S any letter that is thicker then 1/4th of an inch or of uneven thickness is considered a package and will cost more to send. Sending tubes from within the U.S would best be done using a bubble mailer, though thin bags can be used as shown in my other tek.
Step 1: Assemble some Polypropylene (PP) centrifuge tubes, a tall half pint jar and lid with filtered gas exchange(Polyfil, tyvek, Synthetic filter discs).
Place the centrifuge tubes open into your half pint jar, and then screw the lid on tight. Layer with foil and then PC at 15 PSI for 30-45 minutes.
Step 2: Once done pressure cooking remove the jar from the PC and place it under aseptic conditions. I am using my flowhood here as you can see, but a glove box will work just as well.
Under sterile conditions close the lid of each centrifuge tube. You now have sterile tubes that will be ready when you are to send cultures. Be sure to place them in a clean plastic baggie, label and date them.
Step 3: Under sterile conditions(Be it in front of a hood, or in a glove box) cut a small wedge from a colonized agar plate to transfer to your centrifuge tube. Once placed into your tube snap the seal shut. At this point you should wrap the closure on the vial with parafilm or sterile syran wrap so that it does not open in transit.
Step 4: Assemble your culture wedges and mailing materials.
Take a few pieces of blank paper and fold them over to fit your envelope. Next place the wedges into this paper sleeve and then place into your envelope. You WANT to make sure that the wedges are flat so that the letter is thicker then normal, but not malformed.
So far every wedge I have sent using this method has made it to its destination intact and on time. My theory is that because the envelope ends up being .5-1 inch thick they are hand sorted before they reach the machine sorter. I assume something of these dimensions would jam there machines and bring the line to a stop, so it is in there best interest to hand sort them.
I am still testing this method, but so far I have yet to lose one wedge to the sorting machine of death.

Thanks for sharing.
Do you wrap in parafilm before or after taking out of the GB?

I would suggest wrapping before taking out of the glove box or turning off your flowhood.

I have gotten some shitty packaged myc b4 as to where it was no longer viable once it went through the mail system, this is much needed.
and whoever told people to just put a squirt of myc in a ziplock baggie by itself was a big

I do agree some peoples packaging and shipping methods leave something to be desired. Out of all the trading I have done I have only ever lost 1-2 cultures tho.
This method seems to be bulletproof at this point, I plan to keep running tests and gifting away genetics until I am 100% sure that this method works everytime.
THEN comes the contests

Having recently received some edible wedges from Evil, I'll attest to this working pretty well. He sent me four, all four are now colonizing grain jars with no problems.

Thanks for writing this up EM! I've been using this method for quite some time and it works great. Baggies + wedges = smoooooshed culture. Great work!

This method is not new, was not originally thought up by myself, nor do I take credit for creating it. I simply put it down in a TEK to share with everyone as I had not seen anyone do a write up.
Thanks for the positive feed back, and keep on spreading those genetics;-)
Sidenote:
So far I have sent about 18-20 wedges sent this way to many different members all over the U.S, all arriving intact and ready to go. This method saves a lot of $$ sending wedges from Canada to the U.S, as you can see below:
Shipping to U.S
10 wedges by letter mail = $1.03 X 10 = $10.30 + Envelopes ($3 for 50)
10 wedges by bubble mailer = $2.58 X 10 = $25.80 + Mailers ($8) = $33.80
