I guess that means soon skype will be a bloated, obtrusive system that takes over your computer, similar to MSN messenger.

Skype has been looking for an owner for a while now. If it wasn't Microsoft, it would've been Google or Facebook. Be happy its not the FB octopus getting larger, just the ageing and slowly-dieing Microsoft Octopus

Uhm, it allows them to actually use those webcams? Webcams themselves do nothing. You still need software to use them. Skype works pretty nicely, in my experience.
As to the original question in this thread: who gives a flying fuck either way? The alternative for Skype would have been to be eaten by Facebook. Either way, from a perspective of Skype, it is to be hoped that the new owner will allow them to keep investing in innovation, which seems likely. Also, it stands to reason that the activity should somehow start generating profits instead of remaining the bottomless cash pit it has been since its inception. So expect some sort of advertising, or integration in other MS products. From the perspective of Skype users, they'll probably not notice anything in the short to medium term.

^ Yep. Skype's core functionality will not change a bit. Just look for Microsoft to figure out new ways to monetarize the product. Like you said, advertising will be #1. Right now Skype only collects revenues from calls when a person on a computer calls a landline in another country -- and even then Skype only collects the low domestic rate.
Microsoft is smart -- I expect them to come up with some clever ideas

Good question. I'd say that it would be in the interest of MS to do so, as it would enlarge the potential user base and therefore optimally exploit the network externalities of Skype. However, rational behavior has not always been the prime characteristic of MS's strategic decision making, it seems.

Not necessarily. Two options: (1) offer Skype only to Windows users and hope that non-Windows users move to Windows to be able to use Skype, and (2) offer Skype to Linux users as well and enjoy a (marginally) larger user group, making the service itself more valuable to both MS and its users. It seems unlikely that Linux users will migrate to Windows only for Skype (and maybe it even runs on Wine, I'm not sure), so offering only Windows support will put a limit to the number of potential users. But since the Linux community is still relatively small, the most likely outcome in my opinion is that MS lets Linux development bleed to death, but doesn't make public statements about it for as long as possible. It's a cost/benefit thing, and I doubt that the benefits of offering a Linux version will bring the returns to justify the investment. But the details of the business are far beyond my insight.

Really? Then you're either incredibly closed-minded and unimaginative or you're just being difficult.
Because video conferencing clearly has great applicability.

as far as Skype on Linux, there are already free, open source alternatives on Linux. if they killed it off i really dont think it would affect many people.

What does video conferencing add exactly to voice chat? I know that about a decade ago, video con technology used to be regarded as the super-duper technology that would render face-to-face conversations unnecessary, but I know from very up-close and personal that that isn't the case. And in situations where face-to-face isn't necessary, it seems that regular voice chat works just fine. Video is a nice addition, but I'm not sure if it brings that much to the party. (Apart from webcam sex, which obviously is just not such a hot deal if you take away the video).

-Like allowing grandmothers everywhere to frequently see their baby grandchildren without having to travel all the time; something most grandparents dont' have energy (or $) for
-Allowing executives to be present in meetings without being physically in the same room. When I was aged 9-12 my mom would fly to Chicago (we live in eastern VA) every monday and fly home every Friday so that we wouldn't have to move. Now-a-days she can sit at home on her tablet and oversee production issues in Ireland.
-Medical applications: think about doctors in the US streaming in to clinics in Africa where they can visually diagnose skin ailments and give orders to the staff there regarding which and how much medication to administer.
-Becoming familiar (not just fb stalking) your future college freshman roommate. I know how weird it can be livingwith someone you know nothing about. A few face-to-face convos help with that a lot. A lot of information richness is lost on phone/email/FB. Facial expressions and reactions tell a lot about people.
-Seeing the look on someone's face when you give them great news, as opposed to just hearing their digitalized voice over a tiny cell phone speaker.

All of that can be done with email or conference calls.

meh.. its not really necessary.
I just think that it rarely adds any value at all to a conversation that can be completed just as easily on a conference call.

Yeah, that's why he posts his face on this message board \
I'm with frith on this one. But I do think the grandma-argument is solid. It's the most solid one in there. The rest is just meh; it can either be done perfectly well through voice chat or email, or it requires actual face-to-face contact. I think most of its value lies in personal (non-business) communication; couples who live in geographical separation being able to see each other and whatnot. I think that does help in some cases.

Skype was already getting obnoxiously obtrusive, setting cookies, opening invisible windows, running scripts in I.E. even though it isn't my default browser....running them in the background. After investigation, most of it is downloading bullshit macromedia flash player stuff to run ads when you open your browser.

disable all scripts by default, I've grown to do this normally and I'll run certain scripts on websites I know, and permit. easy thing to get used to some nice plugins for firefox etc..
