Perlite question
    #1442843 - 04/09/03 01:41 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

This is my first time using perlite and i was wondering how much water i should put in my terrarium if i only have two cakes ready to put in. And also i was wondering if it is still nessisary to have a drip shield. If anyone could help me i would greatly apreciate it.

There are several ways to include perilite in ones chamber . No matter what method , i reccomend that you add a 20:1 ratio of peroxde water to the mix , it prevents contams from settelting in the standing moisture in perilite . Cousin IT , puts perilite in a small glass bowl , puts enough water peroxide mix to just barely cover perilite , put in chamber .
20:1 ratio = 20 parts water i.e 200 mls to 1 part peroxide i.e. 10 mls
Good Luck

hey trip, what if i dont use peroxide, will i still be ok? I have read that contamination is not to much of a concern with perlite. And hey gorge castanza, what do you mean dont "spray" the cakes directly?

You'll do okay , but keep an eye on the bowl , change out the waterand perilite frequently . Standing water , as in perilite can invite contams . Standing water becomes stagnant water , not good for the schemme of things , Peroxide is cheap and easy to get , is way worth the trouble to ease ones mind during growth of mushroom children . Also use distilled water .
PS george was saying to "not" spray the cakes directly , just spray the air surrounding the cakes , water pounding the cake surface can damage the mycelium colony , hindering growth of pins , and adding to contam risk of said cake . Make sense ?

Yes, thank you, I think i will just get some peroxide. But i still don't know what you mean by not spraying the cake? Am i still supposed to use a mister to spray water into my terraium? I thought you didn't have to do that when you use perlite.

Misting is sometimes required to keep RH up , but perilite should aid in this . If you do mist , do not spray at the cakes directly . It all depends on RH values if you need to mist or not mist . Everyones environmental conditions are different , you need to determine what is needed to keep in check , so to say , i.e. humidifying system , misting , perilite bowls , air exchanges , etc.......
