NZ ID Request
    #14428150 - 05/10/11 03:05 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Hi All,

I'm new to mushroom hunting, and if this one is Psilocybe subaeruginosa I've hit the Jackpot as a large quantity are in walking distance :o)

Habitat: Growing extensively on a bark covered council garden near Douglas firs and beech trees, Christchurch, Canterbury, NZ.

Gills: Brown in colour, not attached once mature, but appear strongly attached when first growing, (see pic),

Stem: Tend to be as long as the cap is wide, 20 - 50mm mostly, Diameters vary from 5 - 10mm, colour is a cream with brownish streaks/spots, smooth texture, feels hollow, but reasonably strong, they pull from the bark with zero resistance.

Cap: From around 20 - 50mm generally, Medium brown in colour, most are convex, some concave, occasionally they have a noticeable peak in the middle whilst the rest is quite flat.

Spore print color: Dark Brown.

Bruising: I've been unsuccessful in bruising this mushroom, I am not by any means some kind of BDSM mushroom master it would seem.

Top;

Bottom/Stem

Young/Juvenile sprout.

Thanks for your help all.

P.S. There are another batch, very similar, but with a noticeable white/cream rim of the cap, perhaps a closer hit?

Haha, nice one  Active species that bruise blue do so very easily. There's no particular 'touch' to it. Just damage the tissue a bit and see if there's any color change over the next 30 minutes or so. If there isn't, the mushroom just doesn't bruise blue. As is the case with the species you found; it doesn't bruise blue, it isn't active, and it isn't edible. It's a very common species though, so that explains why you found it in large quantities.

Great write up and excellent pictures (including spore print!!!) for a first post. You are quite close, if you can find mushrooms that look like this with golder tops and that bruise blue you will be on the money. They like similar habitats so you are on the right track.

:congrats:

Bummer, the quest for the grail continues.

Thanks for your assistance.

It appears though one of my friends, whilst on a nature outing, has spotted some, whether she realizes what the are, well, as soon as she's next on FB I'll certainly be asking...

On the blue bruising thing - I use my finger nail and pinch a slice in the cap near the edge, almost to the point where you cookie cut out your fingernail shape but don't actually cut the piece out. They will go blue/dark blue within 30 mins as Koraks said, or otherwise they are bunk.

On second thoughts, growing from the wrong substrate, and the stalk is far from white.

I do have much to learn it would seem.

And sweet jehovah I had no idea that pic was so large.

Cheers for the warm reception, photography is some what of a hobby, consider yourself lucky I only posted 4 photos and not 40   was really tempted to get the macro tubes out.

I have a lead on where some were found about 5 years ago, and likewise the Psilocybe weraroa allegedly hides as far south as Amberly.
