slowly watching the water level rise

I can''t even describe it. In mere hours the water level has risen a good little bit
It's great that we get so much heads up about it, but this one is strange perhaps because of the unsure, underinformed, and slightly feeling that everyone has. Nobody knows what is going to happen. For now it's all a bunch of "they say," but it feels surreal.
You asked for pics, and I got 'em. Perhaps I can give you some perspective (on why this is so )
my backyard:

from the road by my house

back to my place

Doesn't seem like it could really get too bad, does it? plus the floors are a few feet off the ground
but "they say" that it could get almost all the way to the top of this (on my side):

pretty
but that's not even the part that concerns me
see this (this is about a block's distance from my house)

on the other side of that is a river
with a very strong current (in normal conditions)...aimed practically right at me
last night, I wanted to be skeptical. So I took a walk to get a good look at the river late last night. I usually find this river a bit intimidating. Last night it may have been as calm as I had ever seen it in my life.
It was pretty high, but then I noticed that so was that small natural levee in the above pic, relative to the river. So it probably won't spill over.
But from all the "they say", it feels 50/50
Today I went to take a good look at the river (they opened some spillways this morning)

you can't see it so well from this pics, but that current was insane
I was kinda "hooooly shit"
and then I noticed a humongous log that was like
blew my mind
and I didn't think about it till later, but if that river actually does spill over, (see, i was worried about the rushing of the water)
there's gonna be kamakazi 12 foot battering rams annihilating the fuck out of anything in it's way

I couldn't help but find that thought hilarious
I find out more tomorrow. I already have most of the stuff packed and I'll be headed out soon.
We'll see what happens.

The force of water is incredible. I've seen reports of how much the Mississippi is flooding right now, that shit is pretty intense. I was just down next to the Susquehanna earlier today. Nice pictures.

it's definitely not as bad as somethiing like a tsunami, etc. It even beats a tornado in the fact that we were given time to prepare
One thing that gives me a weird feeling is he way some of the locals are mad at the government about this.
It sucks for the people who are too poor to save their valuables. It really could be worse. I was there giving my little hand in the WTC attack aftermath, and what happened in N.O. for katrina was pretty intense. in a strange way this feels a lot like waiting for katrina: no idea how bad it's going to be but it could be quite severe (fortunately iI don't live in NO so it didn't hit me all that bad).
but I wanted to show you those pictures, because looking at it, it's hard to believe that it' couldreally get all that bad. So if it actually does I will be
but don't worry, no self-pity here. I just find this all very surreal and trippy I guess you could say.. It's a strange adrenaline rush, the only thing that triggers real nervousness about it is my animals.
but all in all, I'm going to try to make this one of the best things that could possibly happen to me.
and at this point, I'll be pretty disappointed if it's a big dud, and not nearly as catastrophic as "they say" it might be.

I don't even know what's going on.
looking at my side today, the water hasn't come up all that much, and seems like it couldn't get too bad
looking at the river side, it has come up a lot. it's looking like this could be a huge thing. It's already flooding in some spots
& from what I gather they haven't even started opening up the spillways only a few miles up the river from here
the current is already intense
this is all exciting in a way. I can't explain it

already evacuated the boats. The whole town is getting theirs out also.
well, except for the people who only come once in a blue moon but leave their boats at their camps. There will probably be drifting boats but if the river spills over good luck trying to catch one
I wish I had a houseboat and could just stay and watch the whole thing but I hear the national guard will be here by friday to make sure everyone gets t f o
i dunno. I'll know more this evening

Just got back from the town meeting. This is expected to be a historical event for my area. (I live between two levees)
they told us to expect 10-15 ft of water from the ground we stand on. Gee whiz lol

you know, I try to be zero percent , but every time I've turned on any of my several national news channels, there isn't any information at all. OK maybe once or twice I saw a little snippit, but pretty much only coverage of bullshit.
but I can bet... if this becomes an epic disaster, it will be on tv all day. I can't say that doesn't piss me off pretty good
local news has coverage of this but damn, I know there are people north of me who probably would like some details and don't have the time to sit through an hour of sports and bin laden coverage
it still feels like a bunch of "they say"...I can't even imagine 10-15 feet of water from the ground (not the river or canal bottoms). I'll be prepared though. We'll see what happens

I've already got somewhere to stay. We still have at least a couple days before it really starts, although I've seen spots where the river is already flooding.
So maybe it actually will get 10-15 from the ground I stand on, but the "they say" from the officials is that it's not going to be coming in as a wall of water like in that video chez man posted
I'm pretty content and relaxed. Not too worried about much. I just find this all really neat )for lack of a better word atm) to be a part of. It I guess you could say. It's like a different kind of adrenaline feeling.
Disasters seem to pull communities together (but I am not oblivious to the people who take advantage of them), and that's always good to see, and often surprising.
