First Grow...Ever..
    #14426941 - 05/09/11 09:11 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Alright, so I've always(since my late teens) been a big fan of cubes, but, due to factors such as acquiring a family, and being 30 years old, it'd become hard to get my much loved shrooms.

Thanks totally to this board, I'm well on my way(as soon as my PC cools)to being self sufficient in regards to getting weird... once in a blue moon, who knows, now maybe I'll do that more often.

So I've got my BRF and Vermiculite in some 4oz jars(correct taper) and put about an inch of dry vermiculite on top, I put them in the pc for an hour and when they get out, I'm going to make a syringe from my prints and inoculate all in one session of cleanliness.

I'll post pics as things progress.  I'm really excited about this.  Thanks to everyone who helped make this totally awesome situation come to be, you know who you are.

G

Ohh yeah, one more thing.

I've seen a lot of posts and threads where people have trouble finding supplies like syringes, scalpels, needles and so on...
Find a local farm/ranch store, they have a veterinary dept which carries all of these items in the sizes we need(18ga and larger 1.5 inch needles are common for horses).

My next item i want to find locally is a sterile bottle with a self healing cap(like what injectable meds come in).  The idea is, instead of keeping spore solution in syringes, I can just whip it up 50cc's at a time.

there are 60cc syringes. great for Agar's Grain LC, but you can make this with 10cc syringes as well.

16g, 1.5" needle with 60cc syringe grain LC = :woot:

welcome to the obsession :peace:

Aright, that seems to have been a total bust, but we'll see.

I do think that no one has ever made such a shit attempt at cultivating a mushroom.

Nothing went right.

The spores wouldnt come off the paper(the print I received was on paper) and I finally got a few of them in there...

I'm just not sure of this deal....  I saw a few spores float off and disappear into the water, but I couldn't see any in the water, I know they're microscopic, but damn this syringe was real clear...

I'm not so sure something didnt come off the aluminum foil and get into my water(for making syringe) in the pressure cooker.... Ughhh...

I'm only doing 4oz PF cake jars, If I don't see something in a couple days I'm going to just go on and order a syringe or something for my first run....

This was just kinda defeating... I built a clean room out of 7mil plastic lol... and installed lighting in it.. I read for a month and a half and planned for the past two weeks.

I'll eventually get it right.  I'm not losing this easy...

Don't be so hard on yourself dude! Learn to see the mistakes, which you may not have even made yet, as experience in a realm where even the experts still consider themselves just getting below the surface on which you and I crawl.

Oh, but you are! Waiting only a few days for spores to germinate is plain impatient, and you will slowly, yes slowly, learn that impatience does not pay off in this hobby. Spores can take up to two weeks to germinate, even in the 70's (F). This is not "normal," but it happens.

As you noted, spores are microscopic, but if you are working with only so few, it would be best to put them to agar. From there, and after some transfers to clean up your print, you can expand to grain or an LC. Don't be afraid of agar. With a still air box and a good cleaning of the work area, you can make an amazing entrance into the best place you can start (agar), especially if you are getting your spores from a non-sponsor.

The easier route is to buy online from a sponsor. If you get any contaminates, it is almost assuredly your inoculation procedure or media preparation, which are easily diagnosed.

As far as 4oz jars, are these the same as 1/2 pints? You are doing cakes? If so, be sure to watch and re-watch and re-watch the PF tek videos. If you follow those exactly, you will have your flushes soon enough.

IMO, you are better off spawning your cakes to bulk

The 4oz jars are 1/4 pints.

Yeah, I'm doing BRF PF Cakes.

This first run was/is all about getting some personal stash and plenty of spores to play with and figure out how I'm going to proceed with this in the future.

From what I've read(and this isnt the reason I bought the 4oz jars, they just happened to be around)the 4oz jars colonize pretty quick, but yeah, they do have to germinate first I suppose.

I really should have procured a spore syringe for this run, then made my own after i had the spores to do it.

Ahh... ok. They will colonize really quickly then, but it can still take up to 3-4 weeks from start to ready for fruiting conditions. Your best bet is to keep reading and reading and/or inoculate more jars.

As for expanding your spores, use GLC rather than going back to spores from your fruits. Not only will it take longer, but you will increase the likelihood of contamination printing, making a syringe, then inoculating all over again. With GLC, you know you have a clean culture to begin with, which is highly resistant to contamination. Furthermore, LC compared to MS in terms of speed is :wow: amazing.

I just put a fresh batch of jars in the PC, along with some bottled water in a jar to make my syringe, my syringes, needles, some tyvek(inside a jar) and a couple shot glasses....

I used the 1 cup water, 2 cups vermiculite, 1 cup BRF this time...

I can buy jars all day long, but this organic brf stuffs going to get expensive, around here a couple pounds runs like $7....

I'm going to do some grain before long...

Don't bother superfluously supporting bottled water companies; you can use tap water.

Grain = :super:  Check bulk animal feed stores or health food store bulk bin sections. You should be able to find winter/red wheat, rye berries, or an equivalent for somewhere between 0.50 to 1.30 per pound.
You can also try wild bird seed (WBS), but, personally, I think rye or wheat is much better for at least two reasons.

I live in the middle of rice & wheat farm country, it's kinda out in the sticks a bit, but grains easy to score out here.  I've got a buddy down the road at Riceland that can score all the 50lb bags I want of wheat and rice(unfortunantly it's white) but it still works good for animal feed.

Truthfully, it's really easier to get some of this stuff in rural areas because you've got feed stores that carry a lot of veterinary stuff(syringes, needles, scalpels...) not to mention if you hit some old ladies yard sale out here, you're gonna find a damn PC everytime.

If there was something I could do with corn or soybeans, it'd be on.

I've got a horse, his poo pile will get a shroom or two here and there. I've got a pile of horse shit id love to just cultivate the shit pile, but I'm not bringing it in and boiling it, its hundreds of pounds.

Ohhh yeah, there's a millet field across the hwy from here I could prolly get a few bags free if not cheap as dirt from them...

Don't use white rice; it's got too much starch. The wheat will work if they haven't processed it yet. You want all the nutrients from the bran and germ to be intact, aka wheatberries. Millet will also work.

Regardless of what grain you end up using, the most important thing in the preparatory phase is getting proper moisture inside the grain from soaking/simmering, then letting all the water on the outside dry off before you load/PC. The reason I mention this is because getting to that sweet-spot varies from grain to grain.

hpoo = :woot: and you don't want to boil it anyway

What I've found so far on HPoo says to sterilize or pasturize it.....

Got a link to a more "natural" method?

I was writing literally. Pasteurizing is the way to go, but you want to maintain temperatures of ~145-175F. Boiling the water (212F+) would kill the probiotics in the hpoo.

I think I got these made up quite a bit better than the last ones, these arent all water logged.

On the pasturizing thing, so Could I do like 20 gallons of pasturized poo then pour that on top of the rest of it and spawn into it?  I mean eventually would the damn things ever just grow there wild?

Your jars look... clumpy to me... but let's hope someone other than me responds in this thread  because I have never done PF tek before.

On the quoted part here... hypothetically, yes, IF you have ideal fruiting conditions outside. But if you are going to bother with the pasteurization process, you may as well make a tub and manage the microclimate with ideal conditions yourself. Monotubs are seriously much easier than people think. That is, until they try them. Also, it'd be a sad waste of good spawn to find out you don't have ideal outside weather patterns. Furthermore, you can put a "spent" substrate in said pile of poo after a few flushes and find out if the conditions will work anyway.

Check the link in my signature if you are looking for some useful teks and don't want to UTSE. Virtually everything you need for bulk setups is in there along with some more links you will find helpful if you move on to some other methods of creating cultures.

Yeah those do look a little clumpy. Did you mix the dry ingredients first? I don't get clumps when I mix the flour and the verm (or at least most of the verm) first, then add the water.

Those should still be okay though.
