Rate my graft (pics) Did I fuck it up big time?

Fuck I have a bad feeling about this guys. I just did this graft by taking the second youngest loph in my collection and grafted it. The problem is, when I cut it with the razor, I saw NO circular ring of vasular tissue whatsoever on the underside of the loph. Does this thing stand a chance at all? I tried to get the best pics I could of what it looks like situated atop the stock. Please tell me there's at least a sliver of a chance that this thing will make it. Otherwise I just killed a loph.

I cut a gallon water jug to use as a humidity dome and sprayed water inside of it then placed it on top of the graft and set it back outside in a partially shaded spot. Good idea?

Time will tell. If you grafted it slightly off center(like it appears you did) then despite you the lack of a visible vascular ring you should be fine. The belevel cut looks a little messy, but its not a huge deal as long as the flat cuts were clean and straight. You should carefully balance out that rubber band with one going perpendicular to the one that's on there. Make sure you don't spray the connection or scion. I'd place in full shade at first and acclimate slowly to partial shade once the graft has healed.

its centered. it looks good.
like naum said, time will tell. but i believe a humiddity dome is pointless. i like to have some pressure on the scion and in a couple days time you'll be able to tell how stuck it is.

Well god damn I just pulled the humidity dome off of it and the rubber band snapped off too, causing the loph to fall callous side first right into the soil. I made a fresh cut on the stock but just plopped the loph back on top of it after brushing it off with my fingers. I think the chances of this one making it just dropped quite a bit. I just want one fucking successfully grafted loph, that's all I ask for.

good reason to use the tape method much easier than fiddling with string/rubber bands etc.

I just successfully did 4 grafts. I'm getting pretty good at it.
The three in the back & one still had tape on it It is a bitch getting the center ring lined up. When I first started trying I had read that you must line the cambium up. Well the cambium on a tree is just inside the bark , so I was trying to line up the skins. Needless to say , none of them worked. Good thing I wasn't trying with Lophs.
If it fell off , thats not good. Depending on how long it was on , I think I would have made a thin slice on the scion as well.
The smaller scions show an amazing amount of growth so quickly.

It fell off basically only minutes after I first attempted the graft. I put the humidity dome on top of it, then raced over here to see if that was a good idea or not. Seeing the replies I got, I went to remove it and that's when the rubber band snapped on me, causing the scion to fall off. It fell into the soil inside the pot so I brushed it off with my fingers and put it back on top of the stock after making a thin cut on the stock for fresh surface area.
Nice work there Urb!

I use black tape (it stretches) and put a piece of toilet paper on the tape where it will meet the scion. I always make sure to wah the pot first so the tape will stick. I have had the tape come off or loosen up after a day or so , so its important to check it. After 3 days if it going to take it will have. The last one I did I took off in two. So yours should be stuck if its going to. I also use the Caespitose version of Loph. (I can't thank you enough for that cactus ,you know who you are) When they get big enough you have an endless supply of buttons. My mother loph prolly has over 100 buttons. Maybe more .

I'll take the bands off tomorrow and tilt the graft sideways. If the scion falls off, I know I fucked it up. I'm hoping it took.

I can't believe it, you were right! I took the rubberbands off and tilted it completely sideways and it stayed on. I am thrilled because this is my first successful loph w. graft. I'll be taking a pic of it every month and posting updates in a growlog thread in the growlog forum.

I've had one that was stuck to, but not connected. It fell off in about a weeks time. If it starts to firm up you will know that it has a connection.

now i rarely graft unless i'm bored. which is rare now that the growing season is in full swing.

50 L.W. seeds arrived today. I'll be attempting many more grafts next year with whatever sprouts from these. I suppose I'll have to get some pereskiopsis stock for that task since they will likely still be very tiny due to slow growth.

I'm just slightly concerned about the black that can be seen on one of the cut ribs of the stock in the pic above, roughly in the 10 o clock position. This black discoloration has spread to another rib..is this something to be worried about or is it typical bruising before a cactus heals up? I know it's only been a few days but I'm not seeing any growth yet either. I would have assumed I could at least discern a *very slight* change in the appearance of the positions of the center tufts, but they look the same when I look at my pic and the graft in person. When do grafts typically start their growth spurt after a successful connection has been made?

Scratch that, I see in Cacti's growlog thread it took his grafted loph 9 days or more to start growing. I can sleep well tonight.

yeah man dont fret. i think one thing people can do is obsess over cacti or plants.
one year i must have lost 6 lophs. and nice ones too. all to rot. i just see it as natures way to weed out the weak.
although that doesnt mean i didnt change shit up.
i know what i know throught trial and error.
so yeah it will be a while for real growth to appear.
i see your location is the stash box. i dont know where that is or what the weather is like but here in deep, really deep, south texas its loph weather. and being like 45minutes away from loph territory the climat is the same for wild peyote as it is for my home grown ones.
anyways just took off ramblin. you'll be fine asnd so will your cacti.

I'd never poach a wild specimen, I'm glad you share that concern though. I've always wanted to bring my camera and look for some just for the hell of it but I'd never consider uprooting a wild one. Every single loph I own are all seed grown in a greenhouse from a private vendor in Cali. It would definitely be exciting to see some actual wild specimens one day though. Kind of like hunting for mushrooms, but with a 'look don't touch' approach.
