To graft, or not to graft?
    #14424279 - 05/09/11 11:57 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

That is the question.  Should I wait until next year before attempting a graft with this baby loph?  And is the stock pictured below too large for it to take hold?  I don't have any pereskies so I have to use what I've got if it's doable at all.  Any opinions would be welcomed.  I have successfully grafted euphorbias and non active cacti but the one time I tried with a loph it failed, so I'm a little worried.  I just wonder if this one is too small to attempt yet.  Thanks

Wait. It's too small of a scion to graft safely.

You should wait until it's about 1 cm in diameter (about the size of the dime) to graft to Trichocereus or another columnar stock. Success rate tends to be much higher at that size and above.

It would be a good candidate for Pereskiopsis grafting now though if you had it and were practiced.

Thanks naum.  I'll wait then.  I'd rather not risk it and I don't have any pereskiopsis to attempt a graft now anyway, so good call.  I do have another larger loph that is ready for grafting and I just got back from Lowe's with a good trich stock.  I'll update with pics of my great success or utter failure.

The larger loph got severely damaged and calloused over because I left it sitting in full sun and it began to rot.  So it's basically missing 50% of its skin.  It is the perfect candidate since I will not be totally crushed if the graft is unsuccessful.  I'd hate to lose a loph but if I lose one at all, that is the one that would be the least painful to see die.  Thanks for the advice again, perhaps next year the baby will be ready for a grafting attempt.

I kind of agree with  ferrel.  Even if its chances are marginally better in a year, you have a tough choice; nurse it for a year and then take a chance, or risk the chance now and don't waste the year.

Actually...wait, I just enlarged your photo and saw the loph.  I think you should wait.  He's just a wee little baby child.

Yeah I will wait it out, I'm in no rush as most loph growers already know all too well.  I'm just concerned about the graft I performed a few brief moments ago (different thread).
