New Orleans Police find two pounds of marijuana & a scale and sentence the man to life in prison.
    #14421789 - 05/08/11 09:00 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

Cornell Hood II got off with probation after three marijuana convictions in New Orleans.
He didn't fare too well after moving to St. Tammany Parish, however. A single such conviction on the north shore landed the 35-year-old in prison for the rest of his life.

State Judge Raymond S. Childress punished Hood under Louisiana's repeat-offender law in his courtroom in Covington on Thursday. A jury on Feb. 15 found the defendant guilty of attempting to possess and distribute marijuana at his Slidell home, court records show.

Hood moved from eastern New Orleans to the Slidell area after he admitted to separate charges of distribution of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute marijuana on Dec. 18, 2009, in Orleans Parish Criminal District Court. He received a suspended five-year prison sentence and five years' of probation for each -- which was precisely the same penalty he got in that court after pleading guilty to possessing and intending to distribute marijuana on Feb. 22, 2005.

When Hood switched homes, he also requested a new probation officer based in St. Tammany. Authorities granted the wish, and the officer, Dustin Munlin, drove to Hood's place for a routine visit on Sept. 27, 2010.

Munlin found nearly two pounds of pot throughout the house, according to court records. He alerted Sheriff's Office deputies. They arrested Hood, who apparently shared the King's Point house with his mother and young son.

Prosecutors later charged him with one count of possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

At Hood's one-day trial, the evidence presented by the prosecution included a digital scale and about a dozen bags that had contained marijuana before being seized from the house, testimony showed. Deputies also found $1,600 in cash and a student-loan application with Hood's name on it inside of a night stand.

Jurors deliberated for less than two hours and convicted Hood of a reduced charge, which usually carries no more than 15 years' imprisonment. Assistant District Attorney Nick Noriea Jr. then used Hood's past convictions on Thursday to argue that he was a career criminal worthy of a severe punishment.

Drug offenders in the state are subject to life imprisonment after being convicted three or more times of a crime that carries a sentence exceeding 10 years.

Damn.

Kid coulda been a little more careful, though. Under the circumstances and all. No one deserves to be locked up for life for some weed, though. That's just ridiculous. I'll bet money that there are rapists and robbers getting less time from the same judge. Stit's twisted around in this country. I'm disgusted.

Yeah, he's stupid. Shit still isn't right, though. Life in prison for selling weed!! Say it out loud and listen to how ludicrous it sounds in your ears. Retarded!

well, yea
it's a sick game they play, the illicit drug trade.. and if you're gonna compete, don't get caught or they'll nail ya.
said it before, it's a perpetual money machine.. prison-industrial complex, lawmakers, and banks. taxpayers flip the bill.

several three-letter agencies are involved with seizure and redistribution of contraband, to gather intel, bust, and do it all over again.
obvious as hell. do you really believe LEOs accidentally stumble upon washed up stashes of drugs along beaches?

i agree with this i do not understand why family and friends don't get pissed and protest this NAZI shit. People seem to be way to apathetic and narcissistic to do anything about this bullshit. Instead of getting innocent people out of jail for doing things that should obviously not be a crime i am going to go update my Face Book page so i can gloat about how i am graduating with a BA in business and then post pics of me and my asshole friends watching the ball game and power chugging my beer bong.

Why are people calling him a stupid kid?  He's a 35 year old man.

He was selling weed to support himself (my guess at 2 lbs).  There isn't anything wrong or "stupid" about that.

He didn't expect to get life in prison for selling cannabis, which is totally understandable seeing as how it's incredibly outrageous and a horrendous human rights violation to give ANYONE ANY time over cannabis, let alone LIFE IN PRISON.

It's like saying someone was "stupid" for filming a cop and having the shit beaten out of them when usually they just bitch at you to turn it off or they'll steal it from you.

Every year this guy spends in prison his judge will spend 100 years in the torment of his own thoughts.  He'll have to face the music of caging/boxing up an individual, a part of consciousness just like himself who literally did nothing but engage in consensual commerce when its his time to die.

He (the judge) won't let himself forget it, I guarantee.

The judge and courts are committing a natural crime here by kidnapping and caging up another human being for, again, engaging in commerce.  If Cornell Hood pointed weapons at any of those people and kidnapped and caged them folks would be screaming for his blood.

Do you think executioners feel remorse as well?

I think dying is a lot like a psychedelic experience.  Much of the cloudiness vanishes and is instead replaced with direct, realized truth.  Consciousness, when it leaves the body, I believe (given the near-death experiences I've had) is required to survey the entirety of what occurred during time here in this realm.  There are no executioners or judges or ganja smokers or any of that when you die.  You realize yourself and you begin to determine the value and character and appropriateness of the actions you partook in while inhabiting a body here on Earth.  Hiding from yourself as we do in this realm while sober becomes a task somewhere between impossible and incredibly torturous (the classic hell experience).

I think that all the stories the judge makes up in his head about why he's hurting someone, and so viscerally and so thoroughly become collapsed strawmen.

And if you "don't give a fuck"; if you could care less about the hurt and pain and sorrow you've caused throughout your time in this body (an incredible opportunity) I believe you are punished, not by some outside force but by yourself/karma.  Hitler must reconcile why he hurt so many people, and if he just keeps shouting to himself about Lebensraum and "The Evil Jew" and ignores the truth that he is the exact thing that exists inside of every Jew; if he ignores that truth, I believe he suffers as a result, not as a "punishment" that is meted down from on high but as a natural consequence of entanglement, a natural consequence of being ensnared by all the falsehoods that he created.

Ignoring truth when it is presented and you are in a state of clarity (abolishment of some portion of Maya) is difficult like ignoring a forest fire that you're in the middle of.

I don't know about remorse but I believe that all actions will be judged more or less appropriate, and that you'll be the one doing the judging.

We live in pretty amazing times...I hope people with our basic mindsets and world views will come together to do something about these corporate evils, but we need to get organized  and formulate a plan of action.  We cannot rely on the political system to clean up their own mess for us.
