Who is your favorite writer?

I am taking summer semester off, so I will actually have the time to read a few books I WANT TO READ instead of BEING MADE TO READ.
It is impossible for me to decide a particular favorite among this list, but here are my favorite authors/writers.
Hemingway, Wilde, Vonnegut, Ginsberg, and Whitman.
Who is/are your favorite author(s)?
please also give me your favorite publication(s) by them and if you have the time a very short synopsis of the book(s) stated... I would really like to broaden my horizons, so make them good! :-D

If you want something that is the television of reading (entertaining but meaningless), I'd check out Christopher Moore. One good one from him is "Island of the Sequinned Love Nun" which deals with a degenerate pilot that fucks it all up and finds himself in the pacific islands dealing with cannibals and shady doctors.
For slightly more thought-provoking but still entertaining stuff, I'd go with Tom Robbins. "Half Asleep In Frog Pajamas" might tickle your interest if you're into entheogens. It deals with a stock broker who runs into a man in tune with alien intelligences from Sirius. Still wicked funny.
Finally, Tim Powers. Just read "The Anubis Gates." It's a book that makes all other time travel novels seem like a waste of time.

One of my favorite books is Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Absolutely fantastic novel about a society who burns books, subsequently censoring ideas that contradict with the shallow nature of said society in order to make the people "happy."
Nathaniel Hawthorne is great if you feel like going in deep. I've done quite extensive research and analysis on his works. I've only ever read his short stories. Young Goodman Brown is one of my favs about a man who battles with hidden sin inherent within every person, even his devout Puritan religious community. Very cool. He features lots of similar themes in most of his stories that delves into the psychological, good/evil, sin, etc. Rappacini's Daughter, The Birthmark, My Kinsman, Major Molineaux, etc.
There are so many great writers and books out there. It's very easy to get overwhelmed. So little time... *sigh*

1984 was my precursor to F. 451. They are both excellent books. Animal Farm was good too. I like how concise and easily readable Orwell wrote it. Are there any other good Orwell books? I tried reading one set in India but it was an utter bore.
Huxley's Brave New World was good, though not as good I as had hoped. I have a keen interest in books that deal with dystopian realities, suppressed societies, controlled populations, etc. The message is always good to have refreshed.
The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test by Tom Wolfe was awesome! The pranksters were some very eccentric folks. A great read.
I also enjoyed The Hobbit by Tolkien. Fun stuff.

I agree my favorite book ever is 1984. my dad told me I should read it when I was in the 8th grade and I LOVED IT! It's funny because as we look at these books predicting the future, some aspects of them are slowly but surely coming true.
Someday the world might be like 1984...Orwell just didn't go far enough into the future

I'm absolutely with you on fiction turning reality. That is the number one reason I love these books. Although they are works of fiction, the ideas present within them can be superimposed on our own world. As I read through both 1984 and F. 451, I was able to distinguish many, many, many parallels between today's society and the ones portrayed in the books. It was so apparent, nearly overwhelmingly nauseating to think that some guy's thoughts on a dystopian future are actually coming true!

There are a lot of good writers mentioned on here. I like Stephen King. The Dark Tower series is awesome. It's about this bad ass gunslinger that travels between worlds on his quest for the dark tower.
Another great set of books are by Mary Stewart. She wrote four books about Merlin and Arthur. They are The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills, The Last Enchantment, and The Wicked Day. They are about the Camelot legend from Merlin's point of view. Written very well.

I'm pretty young and not very well read, but I'd say Albert Camus. He's a philosopher but his novels are outstanding. The Stranger is a masterpiece. It's short, and condenses to a point in the most profound way. Read it in a day, then go for a bike ride at night or something. It'll be like planting a beautiful philosophic bomb in your head. To attest to its mastery, it's translated from French but it's still just as...well, read it. Get toasted for the finale. Also, The Fall.

Aldous Huxley: - "Brave New World" (pseudo utopia) - "The Doors of Perception/Heaven and Hell" (discovering mescaline) - "Island" (almost the perfect society, utopia) - "Brave New World Revisited" (haven't finished it yet)
George Orwell: - "Animal Farm" (very intelligently made political satire) - "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (big brother)
Erasmus of Rotterdam: - "The praise of Folly" (timeless social critique)
Hunter S. Thompson: - Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs (Gonzo journalism at it's best)
Lewis Carroll: - Alice's Adventures in Wonderland - Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (who doesn't know these?)
Patrick Süskind: - The famous "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer" (the most synesthetical book I've read) - The Pigeon (very interesting twisted paranoia)
If you like poetry I would definitely recommend Fernando Pessoa, best poet that ever existed, he had several different heteronyms and also wrote under his name, all of them with different poetry styles, different life stories and different personalities. My favorites are Fernando Pessoa and heteronym Álvaro de Campos, pretty dark poetry.

Friedrich Nietzsche, Hermann Hesse, Nikos Kazantzakis, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Leo Tolstoy, Albert Camus, and Jean-Paul Sartre. Those are some of the authors that come to my mind when I think about masterpieces of literature. That's not to say they're brilliant just in their artful conjunction of words, but that their works resonate specifically with the inner self.

Thanks for reminding me about Hesse. I should really read some of his books. Concerning Dostojevski and Tolstoy: both too slow to my liking. I don't have the patience anymore to read that long-stretched, slow-paced prose, however beautiful it may be.

Some great stuff has already been emntioned so a lot of what I post here will be done for reiteration.
1. John Steinbeck - Grapes of Wrath
People in this thread have spoken about how they like fiction that seems to be ripped from today's headlines like 1984. The Grapes of Wrath is a truly timeless piece because it is probably the most sprawling and accurate portrayal of modern man that can be achieved. It's one of those life-changing works that focuses on the worst of human cruelty and the best of generosity and love. Other major themes involve the prevalent social and technological apparatuses that can and have led to dehumanisation. If you are going to read only one Steinbeck book in your life, this is the one.
Other notable works: Cannery Row, Tortilla Flats, Of Mice and Men and to a lesser extent East of Eden which is probably his most philosophically shallow work.
2. Ernest Hemingway. I know you have already listed him as a favorite and that's awesome. Every Hemingway book I have read I have enjoyed immensely. The Sun Also Rises is probably my favorite. Major theme: alienation. In fact that's probably Hemingway's major theme as it is pretty pervasive throughout everything I've read by him. If you haven't read Men Without Women, that's a really fantastic collection of short stories.
3. Jack Kerouac. Very interesting stuff from a historical point of view and the things he did with prose I've always considered pretty unique and special, though lots will disagree. On The Road, Dharma Bums, Big Sur, Tristessa.
4. George Orwell 1984. Only book of his I've read but you should definitely read it if you haven't.
5. Hunter S. Thompson: Obviously. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Less obviously (and already mentioned) Hell's Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs.
6. J.D. Salinger: Catcher in the Rye. More alienation stuff. Any book listed as an inspiration for so many killers murderers and fools is probably worth a look.
A lot of love expressed for Tom Robbins. Haven't read him but am reading Jitterbug Perfume now.

dostoyevski (sp?) is great ! Crime and punishment was one of my favourites.
I'd say my favourite is Victor Hugo - the guy who wrote Les Miserables.
Although i don't have a great ammount of reading experience, Les Miserables was just an amazing story. I'd never read anything like it. I can see why it's renowned as a classic, because modern day writers really do not write with the quality or depth that some of the greats do. Just try reading Les Miserables and you will see what i mean. The level of description and character developement is astounding.
Modern books are all about situations and to a lesser degree the characters. 'bob walked in the store and said something' Where as Victor Hugo's writing is all about the characters and to a lesser degree the situation. Victor will tell you the internal struggles of the character of the decisions leading up to, during, after and the consequences and how they effect the character. The developement of the characters is really un-parralleled (sp??) in my experience.
I highly recomend Les Miserables!!

Les Miserables is probably my fav book of all time. I don't think I can call Victor Hugo my favorite writer based on this one book but nevertheless, it is simply fantastic.
The unabridged version often takes very long deviations from the story to really build on an element of the story. There is one specific section on the Parisian sewer system that goes on for a bout 150 pages with no mention of the story's characters at all. Its necessary to the story to a point but it can definitely drag if you aren't ready for it.
Other than Les Miserables, I am a huge fan of Watership Down by Richard Adams (as is evident by my username and avatar). I cannot think of a single person who wouldn't like that book. Its so universal.
And pretty much anything by Arthur C Clarke.

Definitely J.R.R Tolkien, not necessarily LOTR but all of his books, amazing. Sean Williams, try the books of the cataclysm, VERY unique! Clive Barker, he is awesome, especially if you're not looking to increase your vocabulary. I liked the Abarat series that he refuses to finish... I've been waiting 5 years. Try Patrick Rothfuss, the name of the wind. The second one just came out!

I was just going to say that, and there it is the last post.
American Gods The novel is a blend of Americana, fantasy, and various strands of ancient and modern mythology, all centring on a mysterious and taciturn protagonist, Shadow.
Anansi Boys is a novel by Neil Gaiman, a spin-off of Gaiman's earlier novel American Gods.
Good Omens w/ Terry Pratchett The book is a comedy and a quasi-parody of the 1976 film The Omen (as well as other books and films of the genre), concerning the birth of the son of Satan, the coming of the End Times and the attempts of the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley to avert them, having become accustomed to their comfortable situations in the human world.
Speaking of Terry Pratchett the Disk world Series is a fun read. I like the books that revolve around Rincewind. You don't really have to read them in any order. Small Gods is the thirteenth of Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels, published in 1992. It tells the origin of the god Om, and his relations with his prophet, the reformer Brutha. In the process, it satirises religious institutions, people, and practices, and the role of religion in political life.
My wife really likes Raymond E Feist. But his series is about 30 books or so.
Oh and of course Douglas Adams I don't recall seeing his name in the previous posts.

William Gibson's definitely up there. Hermann Hesse is also one of my favorites. And Douglas Adams, hitchhikers guide to the galaxy is amazing. Someone mentioned Christopher Moore on the first page, this is my favorite book by him: It's about Jesus, and fucking hilarious, while still being a bit more philosophical than his other books.

Cordwainer Smith? Holy fuck dude, you know all the good writers. 'Scanners Live in Vain' is an EPIC short sci-fi. (Yea, and Gunny Foyle in The STars my Destination, I thought he was tripping that whole fucking novel....)
You might try Murray Leinster also. And DEF Theodore STurgeon. Stephen King ripped off Sturgeon for so much material it is sad.

About time someone mentioned Pope Bob. His books Prometheus Rising and Quantum Psychology are both available as pdfs online. QP is available as a link in my signature. If you can't find Prometheus Rising, PM me and I'll hook you up. PR and QP are about taking the epistemological bull by the horns and becoming responsible for your own programming--in essence, they're books about metaprogramming with exercises at the end of each chapter to help you along in the process.

Theodore Sturgeon was mainly a short story writer. However, he got the first Nebula with the Novel 'More Than Human' in 1954. (I got the first Edition of this in hard cover, from 1954!) Some of his short novelettes (Case and the Dreamer) or Venus Plus X, but I really recommend his short stories, especially Microcosmic God. He also wrote a couple of the star trek originals, I think his most notable one was 'The Trouble With Triffles'.
Murray Leinster was also a prolific short story writer. Here are a couple of his Novels, but i am really only familiar with his shorts, which I found outstanding.

I'm actually doing a rhetorical analysis of Christopher S. Hyatt's work in my master's rhetorical theory class.
I'm working on it as I type this. I'm also focusing on Antero Alli's works.

It's my first masters class as well as my first rhetorical analysis. It sucks, I'm afraid, but at least I didn't resort to bullshit stock topics like some people did. One guy is doing an analysis of baseball announcers' use of metaphors...
Here's the books I'm analyzing:
1. Undoing Yourself with Energized Meditation and Other Devices by Christopher S. Hyatt
2. The Psychopath’s Bible: For the Extreme Individual by Christopher S. Hyatt
3. To Lie is Human: Not Getting Caught is Divine by Christopher S. Hyatt
4. A Modern Shaman’s Guide to a Pregnant Universe by Christopher S. Hyatt & Antero Alli
5. Angel Tech – A Modern Shaman’s Guide to Reality Section by Antero Alli
My professor is also familiar with Terence McKenna's work, as her husband is obsessed with him. I'm thinking she used to be a partier...

This thread delivers!
I would recommend Hunter Thompson: The rum diaries for a great piece of fiction.
Also, I don't know if he's been mentioned, but John Grisham is also a great writer. The Rainmaker is my favorite and a must read for anyone who likes the underdog.

Man...I just like to got to the used book store and walk around flipping though pages till something jumps out at me. We have this place here in Jacksonville called chamblin bookmine, and it's a bookstore that winds thought several buildings, with no apparent order to it's layout. It's like they just kept knocking down walls and expanding the book shelves aren't even really in order they're all hand made and of different lengths and heights; the overall construction of the place feels like a maze with over 2 million books.

I'm actually doing a rhetorical analysis of Christopher S. Hyatt's work in my master's rhetorical theory class.
I'm working on it as I type this. I'm also focusing on Antero Alli's works.
Just checkout the roster of author's on New Falcon's site. Actually, check out Original Falcon instead.
You should definitely post that paper for us to read. You have at least 2-3 people that are interested in checking it out. BTW, if you do start a thread, please PM me and let me know about it, I would probably miss it otherwise.
