Undistributed UN food found hoarded 07apr03 BRITISH troops have uncovered a cache of thousands of tons of baby food, sugar and tea withheld from the Iraqi people by Saddam Hussein. The vital UN aid, stockpiled inside a secret warehouse, was discovered by the Desert Rats near the makeshift Basra morgue where human remains were piled high. Captain Richard Clare, 27, yesterday described the find as a "shocking indictment" of Saddam's regime. He said: "We have managed to determine that the supplies are from the Food for Oil program. The initiative, run by the UN, saw Iraq supplied with vital food in return for valuable oil. "The aid should have been distributed to those Iraqis who live in poverty and are in desperate need of help. Instead it's been withheld. Why, we don't know. Saddam has taken the food out of the mouths of his own people." Yesterday attempts were being made to start distributing the food to people in and around Basra. Army chiefs hope locals will play an active role in delivering the aid and help set up an infrastructure that will also see fresh water supplied daily. Desperate people are begging in the streets for water. The roads in and around the city are lined with desperate people begging for water. Source

So go ahead and blame the sanctions.

Their has already been a post about this.. The head of the US Oil for food program quit after over a decade of service because he was tired of the US not properly distributing food and supplys..
He wrote in his letter of resignation at length about how the US would allow shipments of food to rot and medical supplys to get out dated. Never once did he mention Sadam hoarding these things or anything about Iraq interfering with the program...
Just because they found a stock pile of baby food dont mean that Sadam had anything to do with it.

Are you saying that the US is in charge of distributing food and supplies to Iraqi citizens once it has been delivered to Iraq? So sorry, but that is certainly not what the UN says on its website. Think about it -- why on earth would Hussein allow a group of American "spies" to remain in his country for years and years?
The way it works is that the aid is delivered to the appropriate Iraqi ministry officials by the UN relief agencies, and the Iraqi officials then set up a distribution process for it. Once the food reaches the Iraqi warehouses, no one other than Iraqis has ever had control over it -- not Oxfam, not the UN, not UNICEF, not Human Rights Watch, and certainly not US nationals.
This is easily checked by going to the UN website. The procedures are clearly outlined there for all to see.

EVERYTHING is America's fault. (At least to some posters in this forum)

Humans, more often than not, utilize their cerebrum to rationalize what their primal instincts, their preconceived notions, and their emotional desires have presented as goals - humans are rationalizing beings.

Sounds like small fry. There's at least 5.4 billion worth of UN aid sitting rotting outside Iraq because Bush and Blair think it might be used to make nuclear bombs. That's what we need to worry about - not a warehouse full.
