Addictions & Answers: Bath salts, 'spices' and salvia -- legal highs that can kill
    #14421187 - 05/08/11 07:01 PM (12 years, 9 months ago)

http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/health/2011/05/05/2011-05-05_addictions__answers_bath_salts_spices_and_salvia__legal_highs_that_can_kill.html

"My boyfriend ran over a dog while sniffing 'bath salts' and just kept driving!"

BILL: That's from Tina, who adds that her Pete regularly buys these "bath salts, sometimes they're called spices" for five or ten bucks at their local head shop. "It's like speed," she says, "but Pete says they are perfectly legal. When he hit that dog, he just giggled."

DR. DAVE:  And that "legality" is why we see so sharp a spike in the numbers showing up at hospitals with problems ranging from rapid heartbeats to extreme paranoia and delusions. The symptoms can persist for days. Designer drug suicides in the past year have even led to state laws banning these drugs.

BILL:  Dirk Hanson, author of "The Chemical Carousel: What Science Tells Us About Beating Addiction," and senior contributing editor for The Fix (www.thefix.com) tells me these bath salts are really "mephedrone, a nasty amphetamine analogue."  The problem, he says, "is the Feds can't keep up with the underground chemists – they're legally always one mirror molecule ahead of the DEA."

DR. DAVE: But any effort to outlaw these new drugs is resisted by legitimate research scientists. This same research, they say, might one day control blood pressure or treat cancer.

BILL: William Perkins, one of NYC's foremost authorities on substance abuse counseling says, "It has always been well known that items in head-shops could be used to get high.  Yet these shops have been allowed to operate without restriction forever. Of course, this will continue to go on, since there is no real war on drugs." Doc, doesn't keeping this stuff legal present a hell of a problem for schools?

DR. DAVE: The good news is that most school districts are a step ahead, with rules against "any substances that purport to be" psychoactive. Drug testing has also been widely adopted to pick up the different types of "spice drugs" "bath salts," MDMA and/or a host of other party drugs.

BILL:  And if a parent came to you, Doc, asking how to talk preventatively to kids playing around with these drugs?

DR DAVE: The video clip TMZ published of Miley Cyrus smoking a variety of "spice" called salvia, is an eye-opener. I'd recommend parent and child to watch it together. Then go and compare any interview with Miley on YouTube with her "spice" personality of lost motor control, confusion and vulgar illiteracy is a disturbing glimpse of the changes these drugs induce.

BILL: I forgot how graphic that was. It sure explains why Pete ran over that dog with no remorse.

DR. DAVE: Listen, the best indicators of the lethality of these drugs is the amount of calls to the nation's poison control centers. Last year, there were 2,874 calls about "spice."  This year we are on track to log more than 5,600 poison-related phone calls for the drug Pete is playing Russian Roulette with.

BILL: This time he hit a dog, next time only an air bag may stand between Tina and a bridge abutment Playful Pete hits head-on. Dave, the more I hear you talk, the more it seems that -- like Ecstasy and earlier designer drugs -- the trick is in prevention, getting information directly into the hands of the partners and parents for education before denial solidifies. Any suggestions?

DR. DAVE: For parents, I actually like the simplicity of the popular website theantidrug.com.

BILL: And Tina and the other significant others out there?

DR. DAVE: Well, the best place to see new drug trends and types of use at an early stage across our country is at this website: The Drug Abuse Warning Network. DAWN is connected directly to the country's Emergency Rooms and, from there, to reports on the drugs, their effects and their lethality. You can jump from the links section to find out more about the drugs themselves.

BILL: Aand, if you think about it, an effective eye-opener for parents trying to get a handle on the world of their teenagers "today". It sure isn't the good old days of Cheech and Chong or the Doobie Brothers.

DR.DAVE: And what did you find so charming or "good" about their drug use, Bill?

BILL: I see your point Doc, all I can say is some of us were lucky enough to get to rehab in time to actually make it to our 25th class reunion.

alright I just have to say i really dont think miley was smoking salvia. theres no way. from what it looked like was she just couldnt handle her weed. she probably said it was salvia for legal issues. and plus she would most likely lose her show that everyone loves so much if she admitted it was weed.:zomgwtf:(that last bit was sarcasm if u didnt notice):smilingpuppy:

What the fuck is that all about? Plenty of people hit animals and continue driving. Move along people. There's nothing to see here.
