corrugated steel patio awning
    #14420569 - 05/08/11 05:15 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

i am framing out a fairly large L shaped wrap around patio awning, 42ft L by 12ft W on the long side and 25ft L by 10ft on the short side.

i live in a fairly windy area and was cautioned that it can resonate loudly. the rain issues don't bother me, i live in the desert, but the wind does.

anyone have experience with this material?
:peace:

I was thinking about putting up a small awning.  I didn't even consider the noise.  I was going to use fiberglass, or bamboo, or shade cloth.  I live in the great state of florida.

That way if we get a hurricane it not a huge loss.  I would think how you fasten the steel down and if you use something between panels that will dampen the noise when the wind starts to vibrate the awning.  It give me something to think about.

I have a porch, flat roof, tongue and groove ruff cut cedar. I do hear the rain on it.

the panels are 26" wide, so every 24" there will be a beam as well as 2 cross support beams. i think it will be fine other then when we get really 40+mph winds.

screw purlins across your rafters every 16", a simple 1x4 is sufficient, use
the wood screws with neoprene washers and just snug them so the metal can
move with the heat, it should be enough to eliminate any issues with noise up
to around 90mph, securing them to the rafters alone will allow too much
flexing in the wind and will destroy the roof as well as make a lot of noise

your roof should look like this prior to installing the metal
