The Official "Let us chit-chat about Anime" thread

First and foremost, I am a geek, always have been, always will be.
Now that I've gotten that important fact out the way, let us discuss this wonderful creative medium.
Anime, like music and dr00gz, contains many, many different variations within it, so there is always something for everyone, whether it be badass gunslingin' pandemonium, demonic occultness, little shojo girly thangs, martial arts-oriented, psychological, etc. It is interesting as the art is usually very visually-pleasing, there are some excellent storylines, some unforgettable characters and at the end it is usually a very memorable and enjoyable experience,; however these few gems are widespread and obscured beneath waves and waves of mediocre-at-best hobo ass cum garbage (Naruto?).
I'm not into crappy shit and it takes thangs of a certain caliber to impress me, so here are a few gems I've managed to find floating in the sea of weeaboo bullshit over the years that have impacted me and swept me off my feet that I would like to share with anyone just getting into it, those already into it and would like some more recs, those who have never given it a chance and dismiss it, or for fans of these series I mentioned let's have a good nostalgic chat about them:
--------------------------- AWESOME ANIME TO WATCH
- OUTLAW STAR; Outlaw Star follows the outlaw Gene Starwind and his 11-year-old business associate, James "Jim" Hawking. Together they run a small jack-of-all-trades business on the backwater planet Sentinel III. After the two take a job as bodyguards for a mysterious outlaw named "Hot Ice" Hilda, they find themselves the owners of a highly advanced prototype spacecraft, the XGP15A-II (nicknamed the "Outlaw Star"), and the caretakers of a bio-android named Melfina, the only one capable of interfacing with the ship. Throughout the course of the series, the crew grows to include the kimono-garbed assassin "Twilight" Suzuka and Aisha Clanclan of the Ctarl-Ctarl, a race of cat-like aliens. As per the wishes of Hilda, Gene and his crew make it their goal to seek out and find the "Galactic Leyline", a location shrouded in myth and fueled by rumors and superstition. Popular claims say that it is a holder of immense treasure of valuable metals or minerals, possibly the very rare material called "dragonite". During their adventures, the crew of the Outlaw Star travels to a number of different planets and encounter a variety of humanoid extraterrestrials, space pirates, and many others also seeking the Galactic Leyline.
- YU YU HAKUSHO; YuYu Hakusho follows Yusuke Urameshi, a street-brawling delinquent who, in an uncharacteristic act of altruism, is hit by a car and killed in an attempt to save a young boy by pushing him out of the way. His ghost is greeted by Botan, a woman who introduces herself as the pilot of the River Styx, who ferries souls to the "Underworld" where they may be judged for the afterlife. Botan informs Yusuke that his act had caught even the Underworld by surprise and that there was not yet a place made for him in either heaven or hell. Thus Koenma, son of the Underworld's ruler King Enma, offers Yusuke a chance to return to his body through a series of tests. Yusuke succeeds with the help of his friends Keiko and Kazuma Kuwabara. After returning to life, Koenma grants Yusuke the title of "Underworld Detective", charging him with investigating supernatural activity within the human world.
- COWBOY BEBOP; In 2022, the explosion of an experimental hyperspace gateway severely damaged the Moon which resulted in a debris ring that threatened the surface of Earth with meteor bombardments that destroyed a large portion of the population. As a result, many survivors abandoned the barely habitable Earth to colonize the inner planets, the asteroid belt and the moons of Jupiter.
The series is set in the year 2071, when the entire Solar System has been made accessible through reliable hyperspace gates. Mars has become the new central hub of human civilization, and interplanetary crime syndicates exert influence over the government and the Inter-Solar System Police (ISSP), limiting their effectiveness in dealing with crime. As a result, a bounty system similar to that in the Old West is established to deal with fugitives, terrorists, and other criminals. The series often refers to Bounty Hunters as cowboys. Cowboy Bebop revolves around a crew of bounty hunters living in the spaceship named Bebop. They are a team of bounty hunters who travel the Solar System trying to apprehend bounties. Jet Black is the owner of the Bebop who has partnered with Spike Spiegel for his diverse combat skills. During their travels, the Bebop ship gained new crew members Ein, Faye, and Edward.
Throughout the series Bebop crew members' pasts catch up with them, and the series regularly turns to the history of the main characters in flashbacks. Spike's past as a syndicate enforcer is a major element of the series, while other episodes deal with Jet's previous occupation as an ISSP officer on Ganymede, and Faye's mysterious past and significant debt problems. The day-to-day life of the crew is also explored throughout the series.
- DEATH NOTE; Light Yagami is a genius high school student who resents the relentless increase of crime and corruption in the world around him. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground. The Death Note's instructions claim that if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die, as well as various other rules. Though Light is initially skeptical of the notebook's authenticity, he realizes that the Death Note is real after experimenting with it on criminals. After meeting with the previous owner of the Death Note, a shinigami named Ryuk, Light plans to become a hero and establish a new clean world by passing his keen judgment on those he deems evil and anyone who gets in his way. (the protagonist is the one in my avatar maniacally laughing... so you can see his notions of justice don't stand the test of time )
- CODE GEASS; The series is set in an alternate universe where three superpowers, the Holy Britannian Empire, the Chinese Federation, and the Euro Universe have divided the world between them (with the exception of an independent Australia) and maintain a tentative balance. It focuses after Japan's conquest by the Holy Britannian Empire on August 10, 2010 a.t.b., with their powerful new robot weapons, the Knightmare Frames, stripping Japan and its citizens of all rights and freedoms and renaming the country Area 11. The series' protagonist Lelouch Lamperouge is an intellectual Britannian prince who was sent as hostage, along with his sister Nunnally Lamperouge, by his father, Emperor Charles zi Britannia, after his mother, Marianne vi Britannia , was murdered, and has vowed to destroy Britannia. Seven years later, when attacked by Britannian soldiers, Lelouch meets a woman known as C.C. who makes a contract with him. Lelouch then gains a power called Geass which allows him to give a single irresistable command to anybody he makes visual contact with (for instance, in the first episode, he makes an ENTIRE SQUADRON OF SOLDIERS KILL THEMSELVES). With his ability and intelligence, Lelouch becomes the leader of the resistance movement known as the Black Knights to wage war on Britannia. As the Black Knights' leader, Lelouch takes the alter-ego identity of Zero, who gains popular support amongst the people.
- GUNGRAVE; Gungrave opens thirteen years after Brandon Heat is betrayed by his best friend Harry MacDowell. He is reborn as Beyond The Grave, and begins a quest of revenge against the crime syndicate. The series then backtracks to Brandon's youth, and follows him and Harry as they rise through the criminal underworld, detailing the circumstances that led to their eventual falling-out. It should be noted that the story is loosely based on Sergio Leone's gangster epic, Once Upon a Time in America.
- TRIGUN; Known for its Space Western theme, Trigun is about a man named "Vash the Stampede" and the two Bernardelli Insurance Society employees who follow him around in order to minimize the damages inevitably caused by his appearance. Most of the damage attributed to Vash is actually caused by bounty hunters in pursuit of the "$$60,000,000,000" (sixty billion "double dollars") bounty on Vash's head for the destruction of the city of July. However, he cannot remember the incident clearly due to his amnesia. Throughout his travels, Vash tries to save lives using non-lethal force. He is occasionally joined by a priest, Nicholas D. Wolfwood, who, like Vash, is a superb gunfighter with a mysterious past. As the series progresses, more is gradually learned about Vash's mysterious history and the history of human civilization on the planet Gunsmoke. (the happy nigra infinitely spinning in my sig is Vash)
- BLACK CAT; Chronos, an organization bent on world peace, rules one third of the world's economy. To maintain the balance of the world, Chronos is therefore essential, and there is a need for people to protect Chronos. Thirteen special elite assassins each possess unique orichalcum-forged weapons and are called the Chrono Numbers, assassins who work for Chronos. When the thirteenth Chronos Number (Train Heartnet), also known as the infamous Black Cat, meets a Sweeper (licensed bounty hunter) named Saya Minatsuki, Train's morals and values are changed from those of Chronos's to those of his own. Instead of killing his victims like he is ordered to, he merely uses Hades (his orihilcon gun) to stop them instead. This leads to tension between him and the Chronos Elders, the leaders of Chronos, and eventually culminates in Train's departure from the organization. Creed Diskenth, a Chronos assassin, resents the way that Saya changed Train's life, and murders her. Two years later, Train is an easygoing Sweeper, traveling with his partners Sven Vollfied and Eve, when Creed appears before Train once more. Creed, whom Train believed dead, now holds awesome power, using ancient spells of Tao, something Chronos believed no longer existed after the War 20 years earlier. Creed, now with followers and power that rival anyone alive, including the numbers, vows to get Train to join him. Train must choose his friends and new life, or revenge, as Creed threatens to undermine Chronos and start his own World Revolution.
- MONSTER (this one is seriously brilliant); Dr. Kenzō Tenma is a young Japanese doctor working at the Eisler Memorial Hospital in Düsseldorf during the 1980s. A highly accomplished brain surgeon, he appears to have everything on his plate: a promotion in the offering; the favor of the hospital's director Heinemann; and Heinemann's daughter Eva as his fiancée. However, Tenma grows increasingly dissatisfied with the political bias of the hospital for treating patients, and seizes his chance to change things after a strange massacre brings the twins Johan and Anna Liebert into his hospital. Johan has a gunshot wound to the head and Anna keeps muttering about killing, and Tenma decides to operate on Johan instead of the mayor of Düsseldorf who arrived afterwards. Johan is saved, but Mayor Roedecker dies. Tenma loses all his social standing and Eva as a consequence. However, Director Heinemann and the other doctors in Tenma's way are mysteriously murdered, and both children disappear from the hospital soon after. The police suspect Tenma, as he benefits greatly from this turn of events, but they have no evidence, and so can do no more than question him.
Nine years later. Tenma is now the Chief of Surgery at Eisler Memorial Hospital. After saving a known criminal named Adolf Junkers after being hit by a car, he hears him muttering about a "monster". Tenma extends kindness to Junkers, and he thus reciprocates by beginning to open up to the doctor. Then one evening, when Dr. Tenma comes back with a clock as a gift for Junkers, he finds the guard in front of Junkers's room dead, and Junkers himself gone. Following the trail to the construction site of a half-finished building near the hospital, Tenma finds Junkers being held at gunpoint. The man, who has developed a sort of doctor-patient friendship with Dr. Tenma, warns him against coming closer, and pleads with him to run away. Tenma refuses, however, and the man holding the gun is revealed to be the boy whose life Tenma had saved nine years ago, Johan Liebert. Despite Dr. Tenma's attempt to reason with him, Johan shoots the criminal, tells Tenma that he could never kill the man who had saved his life, and then walks off into the night while Tenma is still too shocked to stop him.
After this incident, Tenma is again suspected by the police, particularly Inspector Runge, and he tries to find more information about this "Johan". He soon discovers that the boy's sister, now named Nina, is happily living the life of an adopted daughter to two caring parents, the only traces of her terrible past being a few dreams she has had. Tenma discovers her on her birthday and manages to prevent her from meeting her brother, but comes too late to stop Johan from murdering her foster parents. As the story progresses, Tenma learns of the origins of this monster, from the former East Germany's attempt to use a secret orphanage called 511 Kinderheim (where Johan came from) in order to create the "perfect soldiers" through "psychological reprogramming", to the author of a children's book which was used in a eugenics experiment in Czech Republic. He also learns about the scope of the atrocities this "monster" has committed, and vows to fix the mistake he made when he saved Johan's life.
- RUROUNI KENSHIN; The story of Rurouni Kenshin takes place during the early Meiji era in Japan. It tells the story of a peaceful wanderer named Himura Kenshin, formerly known as the assassin "Hitokiri Battōsai". After participating during the Bakumatsu war, Kenshin wanders the countryside of Japan offering protection and aid to those in need as atonement for the murders he once committed as an assassin. (this is the dude in Samurai_Drifter's avatar)
- SAMURAI CHAMPLOO; A young woman named Fuu is working as a waitress in a tea shop when she is harassed by a band of samurai. When a mysterious rogue named Mugen enters the shop, he offers to get rid of the band of samurai in exchange for food, but instigates in a brawl instead. Jin, a young ronin in samurai garb, enters the tea house in the midst of the fight. Mugen attacks Jin after he proves to be a worthy opponent and they begin fighting one another, ignoring a fire that started during the brawl. They both faint from smoke inhalation. When they awaken, they find they have been arrested for the murder of Shibui Tomonoshina, the magistrate's son who had burned to death in the fire, and are to be executed. With help from Fuu, they escape and Fuu asks them to travel with her to find "the samurai who smells of sunflowers," a mysterious man Fuu can give little description of, but whom she insists she must find, as she thinks he's her long lost father. They agree to join her, with Fuu making in the condition that they are not to duel one another until the journey is done. (the music in this series is mostly made by Nujabes, shit is so cash)
- FIST OF THE NORTH STAR; Basically, the Earth is royally fucked by nuclear devastation (post-apocalyptic thangs here) and martial arts rule the world.
There is one martial art in particular called Hokuto Shinken (Fist of The North Star) which utilizes hidden pressure points.
Main character (the only master of this assassination art) hits enemies really lightly, they and call him a pussy. He replies,

Within 30 seconds they go from to to
then finally

Seriously. Where he touches them fucking explodes like a shotgun blast at point blank range.
Fucking

------------------------------------------
I wouldn't consider myself an otaku though, as anime does not my life entirely and I would NEVER cosplay or wear Naruto headbands in real life, like many 's I have seen in malls.
Anywho, there ya' go. Enjoy peeps.
Ah! Almost forgot, this is a GREAT site to stream full anime series, subbed or dubbed, and it has every series I mentioned: www.animefreak.tv

I actually never saw Heatguy J or Vampire Hunter D, are they similar to Hellsing?
As for Gungrave, it's one of those short 26 episode animes (loooove those, the plot is concise and straight-forward, NO fillers, and easy to rewatch over and over again ) and it's up on the site I posted: www.animefreak.tv
Also, welcome to the Shroomery, friend.

It's about a bounty hunter named Desert Punk. It mostly takes place in a post apocalyptic desert world.

P.S. Berserk is badass one, too. Probably one of my favorites along with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.

Yeah, it was actually done by Hayao Miyazaki.

This one is another one of my favorites:
Kaze no Yojimbo (Bodyguard of the Wind). It's based loosely on Akira Kurosawa's samurai film Yojimbo.

Samurai X is cash, as is Fist of the North Star, and I keep forgetting to check out Berserk.
Apart from that I'm actually largely unfamiliar with almost all of the anime posted on this page.
This thread is delivering very nicely.
Thank you Pub.

I wish they had a whole series on his past, solely for the bad ass side that we never see in Rurouni Kenshin.
Afro Samurai is really gorey but I don't care for it all that much.

Anyone here can get past the whole anime thing should give Serial Experiments Lain a watch. It's such a complete mindfuck. A brief synopsis:
Quote:
In a year not at all far from today, the Internet has taken one step farther into becoming a world of its own; with powerful systems called Navis, everyone from businessmen to kindergartners jumps into the Wired to interact, play games, make friends, and gossip. (Imagine that.) Left out of this is Lain, a reserved junior high school student who has never taken much to the Wired, despite the fact that her father is in the computer business. That begins to change when a classmate of Lain's commits suicide, and a few days later several students--including Lain--receive e-mails from the girl, telling them that she merely left her body, and is still alive and well in the Wired. Slowly, Lain's attitude begins to change, but as she becomes more involved with her Navi, the world around her and her friends become increasingly more unstable. More suicides and bizarre killings happen one after another, and Lain is somehow connected to them... but how?

Afro samurai was mad gorey which I love, but also delivered with a trippy sci-fi feel. Like its sposed to be set in the future, but at the same time its like feudal Japan. I loved that vibe. And you cant go wrong Wit Samuel L Jackson.
And the fact that his sidekick is like an angel on his shoulder is cool. He's not a real person, but Afro's imaginary friend.

Props for giving it a try. It's very slow to build so can easily see not getting past the 1st ep.
Like you said, there's many different types of anime so there's something for everyone. I tend to like the dramas rather than the comedies or fighting shows. Things like Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Haibane Renmei, Toward the Terra, and the Twelve Kingdoms. Berserk is an exception though, that show simply rocks. The ending is lacking since it's continued in a manga, but the rest is worth it anyway.

Good stuff right here.
One of my personal favorites is Planetes. It's set in 2075 and it takes a realistic look at what space travel may be like in the decades ahead -- it's about a team of "garbage men" whose job it is to remove dangerous space debris from Earth orbit to clear the way for safer development in the solar system. I can't do it proper justice and the only trailer I could find up on youtube was of the pretty atrocious dub (what else is new?) Definitely check this one out if you like SF Anime, it's extremely well written and the characters are deep.

This won't be for everyone, but Legend of Galactic Heroes is probably my number one. It's the longest OVA ever made (it ran at 110 episodes, between 1988 and 1997,) and is basically the "Real" Star Wars. Crazy space opera with huge battles, nothing but classical music, legitimate political intrigue, and so many significant characters that they display their names and titles on-screen throughout the whole series. Zero fan service; this one can be pretty cruel to its characters. It's difficult to get a hold of these days, I managed to torrent it but over the course of several months because there were so few seeds. I think it's all up on youtube but obviously in pretty poor quality (although the torrents would be VHS rips, so not much better.) Also, if you need really slick and colorful animation then this one probably is not for you -- the animation is pretty stiff, though it does improve noticeably for last 30 episodes or so. If I haven't managed to discourage you give it a shot, it's probably the most intelligent anime ever made (I can't believe that it ever DID get made, straight to video and all. My sincere thanks to whatever coked up Japanese exec gave that one the green light.)

YES! I did not catch the Akashic Records bit when I watched it as a kid (how could I have, wasn't even familiar with the concept) but I rewatched Outlaw Star a few months ago and that blew my fucking mind. The last two episodes are indeed a trip in and of themselves. For those of you in the US, that entire Toonami lineup that contained Outlaw Star, YYH, Robotech, etcetera is permanently etched onto my brain. Children's programming has really taken a nose-dive since those thought provoking, trippy shows (although I do give huge props to Adventure Time and Regular show, way more subversive then anything I had growing up.) I loved drawing when I was a kid and I went through a phase after Outlaw Star where I refused to draw any vehicle that didn't have arms holding menacing weapons on it...hahah
Remember this?
Toonami did the best promos bar none. This one was always my favorite:

Sunset, I have not seen Stellvia of the Universe, though I had heard of it the same way you did -- searching around for Space anime. I thought maybe you'd been thinking of Infinite Ryuvius, about the spaceship where all of the adults die, leaving the children in a Lord of the Flies type scenario. I've heard good things but it seemed to me like another japanese high school drama in an unusual setting and I'm not a big fan of those and all the weird tropes that go along with them.

Please post more. IMMEDIATELY
I didn't catch the Akashic Records bit either as a kid but when I recently re-watched it I was like in the last episode.
The original Toonami line-up/Adult Swim, my god the nostalgia... throwing my HW aside to watch Inuyasha, G Gundam, Tenchi Muyo, Big O, Bebop, Yu Yu, etc... staying up past curfew for Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, man those were the good old days. Those shows were, as you said, very thought-provoking, and the Toonami promos were excellent.
This is the best one, methinks, it inspired me SO MUCH to just follow my dreams, and still inspires me today:
YOU GONNA JUST KEEP RUNNING AWAY!?
Just keep running away...?
...
...I'm not running

Likewise, except for First of the North Star which I'll have to check out now for a bit of the ol' ultra-violence!
Code Geass was fun and well animated but the plot was kind of dumb and seemed to require at least one really obvious Deus Ex Machina moment almost every episode to hold it together. Also the characters were all really one dimensional (fitting for all of Lelouch's "pawns," but not so much for...well everyone else.) Both sides always seem to invent whatever highly specific technology they need to counter their opponents at a moments notice and with zero explanation. The whole "Zero Requiem" thing at the end is also highly retarded/convoluted.
More classic Toonami promos:
This all reminded me that:
A. Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, did all of Toonami's narration
B. There is a justin.tv channel called Toonami Aftermath running much of the old lineup

Any of you guys seen Higurashi?
It's a fucked up head-trip horror anime involving cult murders and parallel universes. One of my favorites (probably second only to Cowboy Bebop, which everyone has seen).
Here's a little preview to give you an idea:

Here's a little preview to give you an idea:
I will now. Compliments to the psychopathic chef.

That looks insane!
I almost forgot about Irresponsible Captain Tylor, anyone seen that?

Complete idiot/slacker enlists in the military and through a bug in the recruitment system ends up the Captain of a Starship. Has absurdly good luck throughout (or is secretly a genius, never really clear.) Pretty dry humor but I thought it was hilarious.

I can't stand when people hate on Naruto. The plot and direction is great. The character development is unrivaled in any other anime I've seen. I know its a money-making whore of a show, but that's not a bad thing here.
My other faves are
Hunter x Hunter/Yu Yu Hakusho (the characters are basically the same) Death Note Monster Darker than black
I've also enjoyed watching many other anime's all the way thru while waiting for Naruto filler to end lol
Highschool of the dead FLCL Claymore Hikaru No Go Real bout highschool Inuyasha
Always gotta show respect for DBZ and Pokemon (two of the biggest whore ever)
I need to find more adult-themed anime (like monster/darker than black/death note). Not my typical "kid thinks he's special and has to go his own way" theme.

I don't hate Naruto (although I don't watch it anymore either) but unrivaled character development? Really? Maybe in that there are at least a dozen "slice of life" filler episodes centered around each character.
I'm not saying the characters are poorly written but there are shows with exponentially more depth of character than Naruto (many of which have been listed in this thread so get cracking!)
Ah but be forwarned -- that last anime I posted , Irresponsible Captain Tylor, is not one of them....pfhahah.

Yeah, I just haven't com across an anime that gets me so emotionally connected with characters that aren't even stars of the show. They give enough attention to little details of each character, and makes it easy to connect with them and feel what they are going thru. Usually a show may have me connected with the few main characters. Not talking filler, cuz I often skip that.
Or maybe the show its just extra emo

Yeah, I think that's part of it -- counting both series it's an extremely long show so a lot of fans have formed strong attachments to the characters, even minor ones. I think it's less that they're well developed though, and more that there's constant drama/hardship to make you feel for them. It can be entertaining, but it's never really thought-provoking or deep. My other problem is that it relies heavily on some really tired anime tropes (the setting, the whole "power up" mentality of the show, the plain as day good/evil dichotomy...except for Sasuke I guess but he's a pretty one dimensional revenge character imo.)

Yeah. It's less than an hour, I believe.
That's the thing that kinda sucks about all the Urban Vision animes. They're gritty, dark, have great soundtracks and trippy as fuck but aside from Ninja Scroll they're all pretty short.

Psycho Diver:

I'll give it a proper go sometime this week because the premise is interesting but I had to turn it off the first time -- the music video at the beginning and the dubbing are hilariously bad.

This thread is epic
Kids should be tought anime in school, not all that other crap
I have anime to think for my love of the drugs, dreams, abstraction, and intelligence
It seems to be the only thing worth watching these days
Has anyone said Paprika, its one of the trippiest I have seen, diving into others dreams and becoming lost in reality
Recently Iv also seen Ponyo and Spirited Away, they feel like disney, but cool
I miss classic toonami, I felt some memory hit me out of that outlaw star trailer, something about it seems very familiar, like an experience from another life
Wait, have we overlooked Neon Genesis Evangalion ? Its second only to Cowboy Bebop in my list
Noir is an awesome assassin series, very unique feel
"The girl who leapt through time" and the "animatrix" are two of my favorites, along with Cat Soup which has already been mentioned; truly a movie of few words but a plethora of dialated pupils

Normally not one for mecha anime, but yes NGE is mind-fuckingly amazing. Shinji is really obnoxious though, troubled or not. Rebuild of Evangelion, the more "straight forward" series of remakes is pretty great too:
Better animation and they trimmed some of the angsty fat off, plus things like the episode where Shinji confronts his ego/has a bad trip have been axed (along with a bunch of the metaphysical elements, sadly. Mostly made sense to me and that was in subtitles ) Still worth your time if you enjoyed the original, though.
Also, does anyone remember a children's movie called Little Nemo? I honestly thought I had imagined the damned thing until someone brought it up a few weeks ago (hadn't seen it since I was 10 or so.)
I swear, we had some pretty dark shit in our generation's childrens movies -- we could run a whole thread based on the nightmare fuel that was tucked away in THOSE cartoons.
Case and point, the clown scene in The Brave Little Toaster:
I watched that movie like a hundred times as a kid and I had no memory of that scene until I stumbled across it on youtube. Must have straight up suppressed it.

I heard they actually use Neon Genesis Evangelion in actual College Psychology classes because of how psychologically complex that show is
Samurai Champloo, of course. Nujabes (R.I.P.) made such excellent tunes for that show. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was really touching and amazing, and I own The Animatrix on DVD! I'm going to definitely need to check out the other shows you guys rec'd (AND SO MY TO-DO LIST GROWS )
The last animes I watched were (on account of spending the night at my extreme otaku buddy's place):
Ao no Excorcist (The Blue Excorcist): About a kid who is the son of Satan born of a human mother. He strives to become a "Excorcist" (one who hunts demons and whatnot) despite this and is enrolled in an Academy specifically for this. It's a fairly new anime series and still ongoing (only 8 eps) and DEFINITELY one of the most impressive I've seen so far.
Beelzebub: The story follows the "strongest juvenile delinquent", Oga Tatsumi, who is a first year in "Ishiyama High" the school for delinquents. The story starts as he is telling the story of how he found the baby to his best (and only?) friend Furuichi Takayuki. One day while doing laundry by the river (actually, taking revenge on people trying to kill him in his sleep), he sees a man floating down it. He pulls him to shore and it splits in half which reveals a baby boy inside. This boy is the son of the great demon king and he has been chosen as the one to raise it with the baby's maid Hilda. The story follows his life with the child and at the delinquent school. The beginning follows Oga as he attempts to 'pass on' Baby Beel to other students at Ishiyama, (The theory is that if Oga can find someone more evil and stronger than him, Baby Beel will attach to that person instead of Oga).
The World God Only Knows: I'm normally not one for shonen anime but this one was pretty hilarious. It follows a kid who professes to be the "Capturing God" and can capture ANY girl he wants; the kicker, is that he's talking about 2D girls in dating video games He receives an email asking him to conquer any girl, which he accepts, and is thus thrown into a contract with Hell Demons in which he has to capture lost souls lurking in girls. He has NO GAME WITH REAL GIRLS, and thus much hilarity ensues
My buddy also showed me another anime that had to do with an anime club devoted to an anime, within the anime, but I forgot the name right now. Wasn't too impressive, though.

Man, I just cant seem to find anymore intellectual anime, something to get the thought going. Thats all I really came for was the philosophical and surreal side that anime provides. Good example of the esoteric: Ghost in the shell, cowboy bebop(an indelible masterpiece of a future concept), Neon genesis Evangelion, Death note, code geass decent examples of surreal: Cat Soup, Paprika, FLCL, Akira, waking life(if you want to include it for its animated side), It has to move decently fast while posing questions with its ambiguity leaving you to fill in the answers while at the same time allowing you to create tangents with your intuition and misconceptions. I should be able to view the movie/series multiple times and find something new each way through, it needs to make me ask WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON at times
Animes that engage such a high level of focus leave me feeling that they were truly worthwhile, perhaps I like it because it feels like its deepening me in some way with its analytical opportunities
The amazing landscapes and situations these animated animations put us through leave something for my dreams to emulate as they wonder or wander, Miyuzaki is great at producing said situations through the breadth of his movies; spirited away is so colorful Perhaps something with a unique aspect that makes it the master of its own art, most of the anime I have listed provide substantial originality; take for instance, the gorillaz do a great job of presenting far out music with surreal animations dancing for it like a puppet
Those unique anime have to find a way to surprise me, it has to be something unexpected; perhaps they lead your predictions in and despite all the scenarios your head ran through you didn't expect the ultimate result.
Many of these point->counterpoint works of art, like Code Geass, leave me in awe at the planning which suck me into the story
Kinda gotten sick of the goofy and overly dramatic crap some shows wont stop with, especially when such inside jokes or filler is used as a substitute for character development.
Some of these have such a good touch of sentimentality like outlaw star, samurai champloo, and especially Cowboy Bebop; this being capable of providing moving human aspects to it.
The fracture of a moment in that should be in each story where time stands still and everything fades away is a crucial point of any moving story
The focus on consciousness and souls which often uses dolls, puppets, androids/AIs, and other symbols to make or break a distinction between the two; each aspect giving some deeper significance to the plot
I need more good anime on par with the slew of epic shit the 90s left us with; this world depends entirely on crazy fucking japanese writers figuring out better ways to tell a story and incite imaginations. Hope they can be far enough ahead of our time to provide an altered perspective on what the future will be and possible situations that are true expressions of the mind
Also, I love the drug references that some of them have

Just watched all 26 episodes, also thanks to this thread. I noticed they have a second and third run but the company got lazy and didn't eng dub all of them which makes me rather hesitant to watch it since it will all be in subtitles. Makes me very sad that I cant go further into this in english, hopefully someone someday gets an audio cast together and records the voices in english to go along with the visual and uploads the torrent for all to take. Only two people would be needed, a guy and a girl, some voice editing with some pirated sound mod would do the rest.
Also, just checked out rebuild of evangalion 2.0, 1.1 you are (not) alone; did they dub the second one yet? It had amazing graphics but due to the time constraints lacked so much of the content, its still pretty nice
Wonder what I should watch next

Toad, I would try and get used to subs if I were you mang -- I don't understand a word of Japanese aside from some common phrases but the Japanese voice actors tend to be far superior and you pick up on a lot of mood and intonation that they just don't put into the English dubs. The only series I prefer dubbed is Cowboy Bebop, because they did a really excellent job on that one. Also there are a lot of very good subs out there for every anime -- once you get comfortable reading them a whole lot of options open up because some shows just don't have the english-speaking fan base to receive a dub at all.
I think the lack of content in Rebuild of Evangelion has less to do with time constraints than it does a deliberate effort to simplify the plot and make it more about the action -- I think they even said so explicitly. A lot of people just didn't get what was going on in the original.

I watched Karas recently and liked it:
Unbeknownst to humans, demons from an overlapping dimension walk amongst them in the streets of Tokyo. The balance between the worlds is kept by the crow guardian Karas and Yurine, its master and voice of the living city. However, the time of harmony nears the end as the once-Karas Lord Eko returns. Seeking to purge humanity for its evils, he terrorizes the city with his minions that feast on human blood. The ultimate battle between good and evil awaits; can Yurine and her newly initiated Karas prevail against Lord Eko and protect their city against his monstrous horde?

Im willing to do that for higurashi, it being especially interesting. I love the dub since it gives me time to fully absorb the landscapes, actions, and details that are displayed.
What kills me about anime is the names and the written words. Spike, Fay, Jet, and Edd living on mars are much easier to remember than Keiichi, Rika, Oichi, Rena, Shion, Rika, Oyashiro, and Mion living in Hinamizawa(at least for those of us who only speak english); those books they open and certain other words that are written in Japanese often contain so much that subtitles wont translate all.
Those who made Cowboy Bebop were geniuses in so many ways, it appeals heavily to many cultures in the language, look of characters, the fact that they live in a spaceship, and music
Didn't know what to expect going into rebuild evangalion, I doubt that Ill watch the subsequent movies. All the depth of the full show is what I need

This thread absolutely cannot die, even if I have to get the goddamn jaws of life and AED out
Just finished watching psycho diver and it honestly wasnt what I expected, was it made in the 1980s by any chance
I also watched the full neon genesis evangelion again since watching the rebuild of evangelion got me hyped, the last few episodes and the movie sent me into an We need an omnipresent ego destruction, kill ego
Also finished higurashi, well worth it, even if it was only in japanese(eng text); they tied everything together very well
I dont know what to do now tho, I want another awesome series but I dont know if there are any left
Man I love the summer: drugs, shroomery, and anime

I think Psycho Diver was one I really wanted to see back in the day. I'm pretty sure it came out in America around 1999 but I don't know when it was made.
Pet Shop of Horrors is one I remember enjoying a lot too.

Haha, my otaku buddy showed me the first 7 episodes of Ao No Exorcist a few weeks back, it was one of the most awesome animes I've seen in recent times (next to Code Geass). The plot so far is pretty awesome, what with the protagonist being the literal offspring of Satan and whatnot

Tekkonkinkreet is great. Some ridiculous visuals in that movie. Great for torching one and being immersed.
Akira- classic not my favorite but everyone should see it
Metropolis- quite good. Just saw it for the first time two months ago
Grave of the Fireflies- sad as hell
And every Miyazaki movie. He is simply a master. I have this great connection with all of his movies. I feel EXACTLY the same way as Wise Toad when it comes to anime. But seriously. Nausicaa, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Castle of Cagliostro, Porco Rosso, Ponyo, Whisper of the Heart(probably my favorite movie), and The Cat Returns. Whisper of the Heart is a love story but I don't give a fuck. Miyazaki is a MASTER. A genius.

I've always preferred animated shows to live-action. If I'm going to watch something that's not real to begin with, might as well be a cartoon. Plus, I've always thought the story elements were better in anime than primetime. But, I leave it at watching the show, so no posters or action figures for me. The list I'm about to lay down has been compiled slowly over years.
I own these series and movies. The series' are mostly only 26 episodes Aeon Flux Ah My Goddess! Season 1 Armitage III AzuManga Daioh Appleseed - remake Batman: Gotham Knight Beowulf Blue Gender Black Cat Boogiepop Phantom Burst Angel Burst Angel OVA Cowboy Bebop Remix Fatal Fury: The Movie Fantastic Children Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Fruits Basket Full Metal Alchemist: Conqueror of Shambala Full Metal Panic! The Galaxy Railways Ghost in the Shell Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence Godannar Green Green Wing Gundam Gunslinger Girl Heavy Metal Howl's Moving Castle Jinki: Extend Kiddy Grade The Mars Daybreak Moonphase Martian Successor Nadesico Negima! Neon Genesis Evangelion Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth/ The End of Evangelion Ninja Scroll Outlaw Star Robotech: Protoculture Collection Samurai 7 Shura No Toki Solty Rei Sonic the Hedgehog Speedgrapher Steamboy Street Fighter II: The Series Tenjho Tenge Tenchi Muyo: Galaxy Police Transporter Titan AE Tokko
I've Watched: Wolf's Rain Big O Full Metal Alchemist Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Trigun G Gundam Dragonball Dragonball Z High School of the Dead Demon Lord Dante Naruto Mahoromatic Witch Hunter Robin Vampire Hunter D Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust The Galaxy Express 999 Infinite Stratos Kekkaishi Needless Yu Yu Hakusho Fist of the North Star Noein FLCL Hellsing Patlabor 1 & 2 Black Magic M66 Arimtage III: Dual Matrix Appleseed - the original Akira MD Geist 1 & 2 Lupin the Third series Porco Rosso Princess Monokoke Spirited Away Macross Plus Black Jack Chrono Crusade Dominion Tank Police Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within Gurren Lagann Now and Then, Here and There Perfect Blue Bubblegum Crisis Kite Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer Afro Samurai Samurai Champloo Eureka 7 Blood + Code Geass Death Note Inuyasha Read or Die movie Rorouni Kenshin S-Cry-Ed Samurai Girl Strait Jacket Tenchi Muyo! Trinity Blood Metropolis Cowboy Bebop: The Movie Millenium Actress Bleach: The Diamond Dust Rebellion Bleach: Memories of Nobody Bleach: Fade to Black .hack/sign Tekken the movie Afro Samurai Resurrection Dead Leaves Blood: The Last Vampire Demon City Shinjuku Heavy Metal: FAKK 2
I'm Watching: Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood Durarara Bleach Polyphonica Dream Eater Merry Guin Saga Night Raid 1931 Shin Koihime Musou Skull Man Angel Beats La Corda Special A
I know I'm forgetting a few, but that's most of it. Feel free to ask about ones you don't know.
It seems like a lot, but keep in mind that this is since I started when I was 15, so 11 years of anime. If it's been on Cartoon Network or SIFI, I've seen it. As of right now, I watch about 5 hours a week.

well my mate who is a massive anime fan told me in relation to eng subs vs dubbed, he said ALWAYS choose the japanese version with eng subs. Dubbed versions just aren't the same, they don't have the same intensity or emotion put into the voices. anime in japan is a billion dollar business, over in the west it isn't that much, and it shows when you compare a dubbed version of an anime to subs. i think he's right too, i compared a few and the subbed versions are definately more enthralling, once you get used to having to keep switching between watching and reading.

Have you ever seen that Trigun/Cowboy Bebop overlap video "Tainted Donuts"? It's awesome, it actually looks like Spike and Vash are going at it.

Mushishi is about a wandering mushi master, in that world mushi are like another kingdom of life which is as pure life as life gets. It doesnt really have that story drive that most other shows do since the main character just travels around treating people but it does provide a very interesting thought experiment the likes of which doctors should be interested in, going back to the main point of how to think instead of what to think
Full Metal Panic is about an intellegent mercinary teenager who has no social understanding. Well the main character has to tail this girl at school who falls for him, things get messed up, mecha battles, submarines, nukes, complex action that builds towards the end. It does get a bit girly and cartoony at points but not somuch that it damages the content.
Just watched it before posting a reply, tainted donuts was sick
What have you seen lately Sunset?
