I've read all 4 books, the show is pretty close but is burning through the story at this rate I don't see how they'll make it past one season

books are primo, the show is good but i am reserving judgement until further along. not sure how they will capture the complexity without leaving a lot of material untouched.
excited for when shit gets nasty and lots become gruesome dead

each chapter is a different character which was a little difficult until you learned all the characters but I liked how one chapter would leave off on a cliff hanger but you'd the outcome from a different characters point of view
the books also did an excellent job of making you love/hate a character and later changing your opinion of them

I'm guessing that those Dragon's eggs are going to hatch... I bet shit starts to go down at the northern wall this episode, after what those old dudes were saying last episode, about the night's watch not being strong enough, and the bastard son teaching them how to fight.
I was hoping the midget would stay up there for the winter, that's probably the best acting role any midget has ever gotten, he cracks me up
I want to see how the dire wolves look grown up

Is it me, or has there just been a huge blow out of medieval/fantasy and Renaissance shows lately?
HBO-Game of Thrones Showtime-Tudors & The Borgias Starz-Camelot
Only 4 but still 3 are from the last few months
I haven't watched any of the new shows (seen Tudors) because I like to wait for the season to finish so I can watch it back to back...anticipation KILLS me

FILL HER WITH SEMEN!!!!
Watching Game of Thrones makes me realize how much more vulgar medieval times were than modern times, and it gets pretty low down and dirty even in 2011.
Imagine living back in that shit. Smellig feces and vomit and rank stank years old B.O. everywhere you went (in Europe anyway).
What a harsh existence.

Fuck the next show. At first I'd started reading from the beginning but then I just skipped to the part where Robert dies. I've started reading the books to learn more about the story. Fantastic story.

Oh yeah I should take the time now to mention, since you reminded me, that the books follow a relatively different storyline than the show.
First example and spoiler (won't provide any others); but completely non-related to the main story:
In the show, at the beginning, Royce, Gared and Will leave the Wall and head north tasked with tracking down some wildlings that attacked (someone, somewhere, unsure here). They proceed through the forest and Will is ordered to reconnoiter the area ahead; he does so and discovers a grisly scene of hacked apart bodies, weapons lying around and heads on spikes in the snow. There's also a girl pinned to a tree, lifeless.
Will runs back and reports what he saw; Royce suspects that Will sees men that are dead, but Will didn't mention hacked apart bodies so he's assuming these guys are sleeping and Will was too much of a coward to investigate further. This is Royce's first expedition. Will has been on the wall for 4 years and Gared for like 20 years or something.
Sooooo....all 3 of them go to inspect. It should be mentioned that Royce threatens both of the men who appear quite unwilling to venture further. They acquiesce to his demands. Will Gared and Royce get to the campsite; they don't see the dead men. Royce assumes they have awoken and left.
Gared and Royce stay and inspect the area while will is ordered to go off and find them or their trail. Gared leans down, finds entrails and looks at Royce. Royce looks back at Gared as a White Walker arises from behind him and either cuts him down or decapitates him.
Gared runs off, gets near enough to will to see him in the mediumn-dense forest. He stops (why?? it looks like to take a quick breath maybe?) and a White Walker comes up from behind him and decapitates him and throws his head to will.
Will runs off and is later executed by Ned for deserting.
In the books there are several important differences that really demonstrate completely different characters.
In the books, the story starts off with Will already having reconnoitered the area and coming back to Royce and Gared to report what he'd seen. The books definitely portray Royce as a pompous asshole, but before as they return to the dead man's camp there is no threat of Royce riding will down or Will being killed for desertion. Instead the line used is: "And then there was nothing to be done for it. The order had been given, and honor bound them to obey".
In the books, they arrive at the dead men's camp and instead of being sent to find the awakened dead men or their trail, Will is ordered to climb the tree and search for them using the vantage point.
Gared is kneeling down and finds a previously described Great Axe that's really large and heavy and finds out that the murder site had been covered with snow. At that moment a White Walker/other appears and Royce lifts up his sword above his head (he's 18 in the novels) and challenges the Other to "dance with me then!" which causes Will to reflect on how although young and pompous, Royce is in this moment a true Man of the Night's Watch.
Long story short, the White Walker kills Royce, and Gared has has run off. Some time later Will climbs down from the tree to inspect things and Royce arises as an Other/White Walker and kills him (although the specific act is not recorded, it's made clear that Will dies/is turned into a White Walker).
In the novel it is Gared that is killed by Ned for deserting. Not Will.
Basically, the novel is more complex. The story is made to conform to more familiar roles and plot lines for reasons I'm not sure of but it's still very close to the book. I guess they just wanted to take a bit of artistic license with things and make it their own.

It's also because they have 55 minutes per episode. They have to move the story quickly.

Yeah at least they didn't chop it down to a few 3 hour movies... Though there are some pointless changes in the plot... for instance in the book the hound tells Sansa how his face came to be burnt and all that - but in the show for whatever reason littlefinger tells her instead. The scene where Jaime talks about 'The war for Cercei's cunt' or whatever is in one of the first episodes but doesn't really occur until book 3.
