I hate to sound like everyone else on this forum when I say "around creeks and streams in areas that sometimes flooded." More specifically I would look around tributaries to the major rivers--I live in PA by Pittsburgh, so there's 3 major rivers near me with tons of tributaries branching off. I have been to many creeks in the area unsuccessfully, but the one that was fruitful had knotweed and is a tributary to the Monongahela river.
If you've done your research, the only thing to do is to get out and just look for them, you'll know it when you find them. If you are unsuccessful at a stream or creek, find another one--the differences in wood could be a big attribute to ovoids habitat.

Do you think ovoids will grow and fruit around bamboo? The reason I ask is because I know of a small island about 1/4 mile from the foot of a dam. Being as this dam frequently lets water from behind it; the small island gets flooded (A LOT) and seeing as the whole thing is covered in bamboo there lots of small dead woody and bamboo-y litter on the ground.

Thank you, the tributary bit helps a lot too. Actually a lot of what you said did. It sounds like I should probably give up looking in dry creek beds so much and search more around the larger rivers and lakes around here (THANK YOU TVA)

I've been looking around actual rivers, on the Mon and the Ohio, but I haven't found ovoids near the large rivers. Also, there's not to much nature around the big rivers I feel like, just train tracks and industry. This is why I recommend hunting at tributaries.

Keep looking! You'll find them. Ive been hunting for a few years now, and just had my first finds this year. They are out there. I havent had luck in dry creek beds, everywhere Ive found them has been very damp, and the presence of man made mulch seems to be a catalyst as well. Look for areas where the river has a tributary, that flood water may collect, then recede. I researched alot, and tried alot, but I finally found them. Just need a little knowledge, and alot of luck....lol. Best wishes...
This mornings pull.....this patch is putting this amount on about every other day. Im in eastern Ohio, and we've had a perfect cool Spring, with alot of early flooding.

Good luck! PS, there is knotweed and bamboo chutes where I find mine.

I gotcha. Most of our big rivers and lakes are the result of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority). The TVA came in and created jobs by having people build tons of dams (there are three or four fairly large dams within like 30 minutes drive). The part of TN I live in other wise would have few "Rivers" and "lakes" and they would all just be tons of little streams that would occasionally bleed together or turn into ponds.
The place I tried today is actually has a man made flood zone (it's an aboritum(SP?) that open to public). That in certain areas perfectly mimics "...Stream that floods occasionally" description. But no luck (Though I think I might have found my first oysters ever [pictures when my camera bat charges]).
I think I'm just going to keep researching for what ideal conditions will be. And driving around looking for good spots to start looking. At least until the end of this coming week (it's supposed to drizzle off and on mon/tues, take a break, than pour thur-sat. Then sunny 70's high 50-60's low. I just can't decide if I want to go up into the Smokey Mountain ntnl. park; or stick to around where the TVA likes to play.

Thanks for the encouragement! Also thanks for the advice. And I'm not worried about finding them, because I know I will. Why, Because I'm stubborn as all hell, and once I get my minds set to something, like this, I make sure it happens, no matter how much time and reaserch gets dumped into this. Not to mention I would technically (if no one beat me to it) be the first documented find in my state .
Also What you describe sounds a lot more like all the man made TVA stuff around here, which is really really really encouraging. There are TONS of little inlets and tributaries which water levels change constantly (once again, TVA to blame, or thank...).

About 6 hours combined hunting down in central New Jersey, diddly squat.
If you guys don't mind taking prints I sure would love them. I'm trying to get some culture of them going.
Also, any tips on finding their environment? Franky, I don't find very many mushrooms in general. I feel like I'm way off when parsing for likely habitats.

A rather meager pull from todays hunt, only had a couple hours to spend.....

My patch is pretty cleaned out right now, but rain in the forecast later today, I left a bunch of pins, so hopefully tomorrow morning, Ill have some more to show. Happy Hunting all.....
I ate a dried gram last night. Pretty instense closed eye visuals, and one serious heavy buzz. Going to up it to 2.5 grams next time around.

I haven't had a chance to head SE to the river yet and I'm super jealous. I spent a few hours looking around here in central ohio near the river but no luck. Not this far NW yet, at least not in enough abundance to find them easily.
As for dosage of dry weight: it depends on what you normally dose for cubes. Take that and divide by 1.5. I'd personally go with 1.5g but I normally dose about 2.5g of cubes.

Heres some from this year, they came later than the one's last year... and not nearly as many. I tried misting them to see if they will get any bigger before I pick them. I hope it doesn't hurt, they get rain so ...
At first I only found a few really small ones. I looked harder and found a few more, then looked even harder moving some leaves under this bush and found the bigger ones... and alot more. Still though, not as much as last year... last year coming out with almost an ounce dry in one patch. This year maybe 1 or 2 grams. Im trying to treat them with respect this time around and not go picking them all right away. <3

Here's a tiny bit of what was gathered from last year for comparison

Happy hunting people <3

Are there regional variations within the ovoid species? I've never seen any blue like that.

Yeah, I think that there is momentous genetic variation in ovoids. The patch I go to has remarkably different shapes and sizes of the mushroom. A lot of the ovoids at my patch are much smaller and skinnier than the ones some have posted.
