liquid culture question
    #14418851 - 05/08/11 10:18 AM (12 years, 8 months ago)

I have almost no experience doing LC yet but its largely been going OK. The jars are colonizing slowly but nicely and the grain I more recently inoculated from some of them is starting to show growth as well.
One thing that came up this week is my Aloha 75 LC cultures now have growth on the surface of the liquid I would want to guess is a white fibrous mold for the mere sake of where it is growing but it looks very much like the mycelium that colonizes my agar plates.
Does shiitake ever form colonies on the surface of a liquid culture or would it be safer to think this is a mold contamination?

Was this photo shot open air? If so, then its contaminated.
If not it is rather suspicions, as my shiitake lc looks like this

If its floating I'd say cobweb mold.
You could always test it in a grain jar or agar plate. :goodluck:

I've had lc's that had formed white myc on the surface of the lc... I think from your photo it looks great.

Thanks to both.
Yes, to the first question as the image was just not working through the glass of the jar. I shot it inside my flow hood from a distance but using magnification hoping the combination of clean airflow and my position would be enough to prevent anything falling from my camera.
Its one of a number of jars that are going so not a fatal loss if I failed and it did get contaminated. Hopefully its OK.
I inoculated a couple of jars of rye grain from it today to see how it goes.
Most of the LC jars have looked like that photo Versicolor shared with all of the white messes of stuff towards the bottom or floating under the surface. Its only recently the surfaces started showing growth which concerned me. I'm not using a lot of liquid due to not having a longer needle.
This sure is a heck of a lot of fun - success or failure.
