They weren't too far off the colours shown, I edited some of the shots that were too dark and they did pick up some redness though.

I'm having no luck finding actives (going with other people means we end up hunting in the fucking dark!) , but I think I'm actually starting to learn and identify other finds that I bring home.
On that note, Bruce Fuhrer's field guide shits all over Tony Young's. Discuss.

I remember reading something about honey preservation a while ago. I can't remember if it was dangerous or not, but I googled it quickly and came up with a couple of things:
"While it is sometimes rumored that the Aztecs stored their mushrooms in honey, there is debate as to whether honey will actually preserve the mushrooms. Jonathon Ott states that "embalming in honey is useless for preservation of mushrooms." [Jonathon Ott, Pharmacotheon (City: Publisher, 1993) Notes on Psilocybin Section.] While amateur experimentation has shown that it can be at least somewhat effective, it is not believed that the Aztecs actually employed this technique." -http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_faq.shtml
[Erowid Note: Storing fresh mushrooms in honey can lead to excess water in the honey, which can result in either rotting or fermenting. Caution should be excercised when ingesting fresh mushrooms stored in honey.]
Hello Victoria thread. Great finds you guys are having - awesome
I've had a bit of experience with preserving in honey - here's my 2 cents:
I can testify that this preservation technique is effective in keeping mushroom potency. I'd like to think it's even better than simply storing dry whole mushrooms because the mushrooms are not exposed to as much air - though this is just my personal theory, not tested.
This is a jar I prepared last year - it has about 80 whole mushrooms in it.
When preserving mushrooms in honey, it's best to completely dry them first. I've put mushrooms at varying degrees of freshness into jars with honey, and the honey goes runny, and it looks like awesome fermentation conditions. I went so far as to pasteurise a couple of jars once to be sure that fermentation wouldn't happen (with reduced potency resulting no doubt).
How to preserve potency of mushrooms using honey - the dot points:
- Best to dry the mushrooms.
- buy decent preserving jars and sterilise
- best to use the most intact specimens for preserving with this method
- put as many DRY mushrooms as you can into your jar and fill it (Though don't compress mushrooms into jar and cause damage to them - we want the mushrooms to be as intact as possible for storage).
- use a fresh new jar of honey (the squeeze bottles you see some honey in works well for this) and bring it to a nice warm room temperature so it's not too gluggly and slow to pour
- keep pouring honey into the jar until it's full
- let the honey settle through mushrooms and keep topping up as the honey level in the jar falls
- leave no air bubble at the top, we want as few bubbles in the jar as possible (though some are usually unavoidable).
- store the jar out of the light in a cool place
This guide is the best I've come across.
Enjoy

How long do you think fresh mushys will store in honey?
When out camping/hunting I need to store them fresh until I get home, which is ussaly about 4 days.

I don't know - maybe they'll be fine, maybe they'll start fermenting, maybe some jars will ferment, others won't. All I know is that when you put fresh (or even semi-dried) mushrooms in jars of honey, the moisture leaches out of the mushrooms into the honey - making it very runny, and probably also very active.
If you put the mushrooms in honey, I doubt whether you'd be able to do anything different with them at a later time - like take the mushrooms out and then dry them. I reckon once they're in, they're in.
Somehow, I don't think using honey in this way will produce good results.
Maybe what you need is a string bag, or some flyscreen. You can put the shrooms in and hang the bag somewhere sheltered - hopefully they won't rot in the few days it takes you to get home and lay them out properly to dry.

Thanks ToMP, it's great to hear some first hand experience with this. How long have you kept mushrooms in honey before?

Hey Guys,
went on my first hunt the other day at two different parks, at park #1 i found nothing, i have been told this particular spot is ripe with subs however i came up stumps, not even a inactive! ill check back once it gets a bit wetter and colder later in the week
Park #2 was a pure gamble drove past it and thought ahh what the hell why not, i found a heap of inactive ones and was stoked just to find them (lame but i'm a first timer)
so my question is as follows, 2 actually
#1 if there are in-actives in the area will there be actives?
#2 the ground was quiet firm should i be looking in softer soil areas?
