Countercultures
    #14416154 - 05/07/11 04:45 PM (12 years, 8 months ago)

Are there any countercultures present today? Why or why not.

Well in the Hegelian sense, yes.

Current status quo society -----> anyone doing/advocating change -------> new status quo -------> etc.

--------------------
"Life sucks but in this really beautiful way" - Axl Rose
"Life's a bitch and then you die that's why we get high cuz you never know when you're gonna go." - NAS
"When people don't know what you're about they put you down and shut you out" - Black Sabbath
"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" - Gandhi
"Look up at me I am God, look down on me and I am evil, look at me I am you." - Charles Manson.
"Don't question my reality." - Me (as far as I know)

Us drug users are technically part of an underground subculture. :awedrugs:

Why? Because we are at odds with the mainstream opinion that drugs are the devil.

I feel that some of the speakers at TED http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TED_%28conference%29 address paradigm shifts on ecological, technological, educational and other levels. Wouldn't you call people who adhere to these changes and participate in the actively, to be a counterculture to the present, old-school approaches that still are running the way the world turns.

Perhaps all those involved in changing the way things are done, are to be called the counterculture to old ways. Them (the old ways) being like the cocoons from where the new organic (vs. linear) ways of living emerge.

So, in a word, i believe the organic counterculture as opposed to the linear culture is a reality.

Culture is too mixed and multifarious right now to have a prevailing counterculture. It is hard to say what exactly is mainstream culture.

I think Teh Gayz are a counterculture too, but they seem to be in the process of assimilation by the main stream of mainstream culture. :borg:

yeah, apparently sexual preference has nothing to do with attitude towards gentrification.

That's the way shit goes--eventually, fringe groups whose presence is maintained for a long enough time generally eventually become melded with the mother-culture. :assimilate:

take one side of the bell curve and balance it with the other side. I think there is an even distribution of personality traits which are attracted to various subcultures.

Once one of these groups achieves some prominence, its opposing group often steps up rhetoric or takes action. One way you could view it is to counter the other group.

Apparently the term "antidisestablishmentariansm" was coined by the very last fully-literate individuals involved in the Christian clergy to describe their opposition to the detachment of advanced learning from Christian morality.

Counter-cultures generally crack me up. "I want to be a rebellious and unique biker and wear a leather vest and boots and sport tats, a beard/goatee, unkempt hair, a buck-knife, a long chain and ride a Harley like EVERY OTHER BIKER."

Same with goths, punks or substitute the CC of your choice.

I bet the next thing will be something revolving around dubstep. It's already happening at my school.

Doesn't matter the sub-culture. All need some sort of uniform and secret handshake to differentiate those who are IN with those who are OUT. Been this way since the dawn of time and across the entire planet.

Girls are starting to wear neon tank tops and neon "headbands", as if they were "dubstep hippies".

What exactly is wrong with that? Everyone has to wear something, it might as well not be a burlap sack.
