yes, the cost of living is higher but the way you actually live is different too.
you will not buy a 4br/2ba house with a front and back yard in a major metropolitan area.. if you do, you will be paying a shit load of money for it (assuming it exists at all). you have to downsize everything when you are living in such small spaces.
i would love a place like this:
and if anything.. i think that lady has too much junk. she could lose at least half of everything she owned and shed be fine.
i could not do that. i think i would have a panic attack as well. sex in the bed would be pretty difficult and i guess you better get used to missionary position

Move to NYC, screw cheap. Find a way to make it work. Do it now while your interested in it. I would personally love to live way out in the boondocks if I could afford my own land. I'm living in Austin TX and it does have a certain charm. Lots of live music, great food, diverse people, things constantly going on, enough commerce to satisfy almost anyone. The downsides are traffic, people, air quality, can be noisy, can be pricey if you don't know how to shop around. So I would say while your young you should try to live in a cool city: Denver, portland, san francisco, new york, las vegas are all pretty cool places. I'm sure theres places that I didn't mention that would be cool to live in also.

Ya, I want to live in a city but on the otherhand I want to get a head start on buying and owning a house, most likely in the south east.
so in the city, are all things such as food at grocery stores, and merchandise at walmart more expensive than an average town?
how much would you expect to pay for a 1room/1br apt in a city?

Small towns under 30,000 ftw.
I am actually looking to buy a house far from town on some property. I have done my share of apartment, condo, suburb-housing tracks and I can honestly say, I want to be able to run naked and bark at the moon and not have any one see or hear me, oh and maybe take a deer
The obly thing I miss where I live now is it is about a 5-6 hour drive to see any big concert event. Luckily Floater and Primus love my area.

I live in a small town (well I would call it small) of about 50,000 people.
It's pretty close to the city too, only like a 10 minute drive on a good day.
Personally, I wouldn't mind living in the city. You're close to everything, there's a lot of night life, concerts, restaurants, etc.... Although, living in a small town is nice. I like being able to ride my bike around the back streets without much traffic, it's quiet, and very safe. The crime rates where I live are reallllyyy low, which is nice.
The city is going to be more expensive than a small town 99/100 times. Especially in NYC. Condo/apartment prices on Manhattan are expensive as hell

SMALL TOWN
pros: lots of land, cheaper taxes, peaceful, you can buy acres at a time.
cons: Far from urban centers, stores, may be boring as fuck, less services than in the city
CITIES:
pros: Close to everything, no need for a car, malls, lots restaurants, lots of jobs
Cons: too much people, less quiet, more expensive, everything seems dirtier, small lots, crime, pollution
Ive lived in a small town for many years, I liked it. I moved to the city and I realised how much small towns are shitty.

i live in the city and have all my life. i love that hanging out with friends or going to the store is in walking distance. but i hate how congested the roads are, and as well as the some streets can be. so many people are miserable in the city too i find. it can be very stressful, well maybe i just get stressed out too easily lol i'd love to live in the country, at least for a little while. i think it would be amazing, exploring forests and trails and such. having a house party wouldn't be a problem because your neighbors wouldn't be able to hear the ruckus. you could smoke a blunt or eat some mushies and just chill out in your backyard, listening to the sounds of nature and not have to endure the sound of passing cars or honking horns. i definitely plan on spending a lot of my summer camping

Weird I lived in a small town my whole life and moved to a city and realized how shitty they are (minus a few small benefits) and how lucky I was to have grown up where trees still exist and seeing a wild animal isn't some freak occurrence.

in small towns they have nothing better to do.. in a giant city there is too much going on at all times.. they cant keep on top of everything and most times ignore whatever is going on.
:
Too true about Philly cops...they are too busy doing other things, I have a lot of family who are in the force and always say how busy they were and how they let people go because if they didn;t they would be out of their asses in paperwork.
Also, I've lived all over Philadelphia my entire life and My grandfather owns a house in the mountains so I would go there and stay the entire summer and knew a lot of the people in the town. I hated the small town thing, I could never do the suburbs or rural life.
Big city all the way

I have lived in big cities and small towns in both west coast and east coast.
A town that is 100k+ is good. anything smaller can be quite boring. Id say its best to live near a huge city, but not in the city....
On top of that if you live in the city, the best place is always like the most downtown up to par spot.

Definitely a trade off, like most have said. Just a bit ago, I was sitting on my porch in the backyard, listening to the birds, and relaxing. It was awesome.
Meanwhile, when my friends go out in the city, it takes me 15 min. to drive to the subway, then its a 30 min. ride into the city. I have a slight preference for non-city, but it's a tough comparison. It's very different living.

I much prefer the small town. I'm in the city now and I'm pretty sick of it. No stars, no wilderness, lots of noise, pollution, dirt, cops.
I really want to get a place up on the north shore of Lake Superior.

city life... i thrive on fresh, revelatory performing arts... need a wicked live music scene... theatre, dance, comedy... cultural festivities... art museums, galeries, readings, lectures... a wide variety of vegetarian cuisine...

It is easier to find vegetarian friendly restaurants in the city....restaurants period for that matter.
To be vegetarian/vegan in the country you pretty much have to cook at home, everywhere that serves food out there uses lard.
